There they mixed with one another‚ adapted to their surroundings‚ traded with Britain‚ Spain and the United States and came to be collectively recognized as one of the Five Civilized Tribes (along with the Cherokee‚ Chickasaw‚ Choctaw and Creek/Muscogee) of the American Southeast. Not civilized enough for some‚ apparently‚ for when the United States acquired Florida in 1821‚ it began herding the Seminoles‚ through a succession of treaties‚ to progressively smaller and less desirable parts of the state. Ultimately‚ in 1834 federal officials set Jan. 1‚ 1836‚ as a deadline for <;a href=";https://www.historynet.com/on-removing-seminoles/";>;removal of the Seminoles<;/a>; from Florida to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). When a 110-man detachment of the 4th U.S.<;sup>;<;/sup>;Infantry under Brevet Maj. Francis L. Dade set out for Fort King to oversee that final removal‚ however‚ it was ambushed by 180 Seminoles led by Halpatter Tustenuggee (Alligator) on Dec. 28‚ 1835. The ensuing slaughter of all but two of Dades men marked thebeginning of the longest campaign fought between the U.S. Army and American Indians‚ a mixof pitched battles and guerrilla warfare.<;/p>;<;p>;In<;em>;Seminole Warrior versus U.S. Soldier: Second Seminole War‚ 1835<;/em>;42 (No. 61 in Ospreys<;em>;Combat<;/em>;series) military historian Ron Field compares the tactics‚ arms‚ equipment and fighting techniques used by both sides. In addition to what whites termed the Dade massacre‚ re-examined here through a more impartial lens‚ Field relates two other major engagementsat Lake Okeechobee‚ on Christmas Day 1837‚ and the second of back-to-back clashes at the Loxahatchee River‚ on Jan. 24‚ 1838.<;/p>;<;p>;Set in what might be more appropriately called the Wild South‚ the Second Seminole War was something of a learning process for both sides. Several notable future U.S. Army figures had their first taste of Indian warfare and‚ for that matter‚ their first combat experience during theconflict‚ lessons they wouldapply during the Mexican War. The Seminoles likewise developed guerrilla tactics they would employ as scouts during the Armys later run-ins with other tribes on the Great Plains. Backed by Ospreys usual fine array of illustrations and maps‚<;em>;Seminole Warrior versus U.S. Soldier<;/em>;offers<;em>;Wild West<;/em>;readers a peek at the dress rehearsal for Indian campaigns to come.<;/p>;<;div class=";wp-block-group product-placement is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow";>;<;div class=";wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile";>;<;figure class=";wp-block-media-text__media";>;<;img decoding=";async"; width=";753"; height=";1024"; src=";https://www.historynet.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/91xdazMwZL._SL1500_-1-753x1024.jpg"; alt=";"; class=";wp-image-13796919 size-full"; srcset=";https://www.historynet.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/91xdazMwZL._SL1500_-1-753x1024.jpg 753w‚ https://www.historynet.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/91xdazMwZL._SL1500_-1-221x300.jpg 221w‚ https://www.historynet.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/91xdazMwZL._SL1500_-1-768x1044.jpg 768w‚ https://www.historynet.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/91xdazMwZL._SL1500_-1-400x544.jpg 400w‚ https://www.historynet.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/91xdazMwZL._SL1500_-1-37x50.jpg 37w‚ https://www.historynet.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/91xdazMwZL._SL1500_-1.jpg 1103w"; sizes=";(max-width: 753px) 100vw‚ 753px";>;<;/figure>;<;div class=";wp-block-media-text__content";>;<;h2 class=";wp-block-heading";>;Seminole Warrior vs. U.S. Soldier<;/h2>;<;p>;Second Seminole War‚ 183542<;/p>;<;p>;By Ron Field‚ Osprey Publishing‚ 2022<;/p>;<;div class=";wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex";>;<;div class=";wp-block-button";>;<;a class=";wp-block-button__link wp-element-button"; href=";https://amzn.to/3wfmV3g"; target=";_blank"; rel=";noreferrer noopener";>;get it on amazon<;/a>;<;/div>;<;/div>;<;p>;<;em>;If you buy something through our site‚ we might earn a commission.<;/em>;<;/p>;<;/div>;<;/div>;<;/div>;

Mac and Cheese in 1736? The Stories of Kensington Palaces Servants

<;p>;<;span>;Kensington Palace is not just a grand residence for the British monarchy‚ but also a place where countless servants worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of the court. These servants played a crucial role in various aspects of royal life‚ from preparing extravagant meals to facilitating diplomatic visits and even caring for royal babies.<;/span>;<;/p>;<;p>;<;span>;In the grandeur of Kensington Palace‚ the royal plates were adorned with delicacies that were considered worthy of a king. From potted turtles to puffins‚ the court enjoyed an array of exotic dishes imported from around the world. China plates‚ which were considered special‚ were used to serve certain dishes‚ adding an elegant touch to the table. These plates‚ along with the meticulous arrangement of the dishes‚ provided a glimpse into the opulence and sophistication of royal dining.<;/span>;<;/p>;<;p>;<;/p>;<;h2>;<;b>;The Importance of<;/b>; <;b>;Notebooks<;/b>;<;/h2>;<;p>;<;span>;One of the most valuable sources of information about daily life at Kensington Palace is a notebook kept by James Daniel‚ the head cook. Dan Snow remarks at how rare it is to have a surviving artefact such as this<;/span>;<;span>;<;br>;<;/span>;<;span>;<;br>;<;/span>;<;i>;<;span>;its an extraordinary record because its his personal notebook<;/span>;<;/i>;<;/p>;<;p>;<;span>;This notebook offers insights into the workings of the kitchen and the experimentation that took place. It includes little marginal notes where someone has whispered suggestions to Daniel‚ such as adding a certain dish to the royal table. Snow remarks at how some of todays familiar favourites were also popular in the 18th Century<;/span>;<;/p>;<;blockquote>;<;p>;<;i>;<;span>;weve got literally macaroni and cheese‚ way back in 1736<;/span>;<;/i>;<;/p>;<;/blockquote>;<;p>;<;span>;And also how dishes would be transported and taught all around the world<;/span>;<;/p>;<;blockquote>;<;p>;<;i>;<;span>;we also have a German dish‚ we havent really worked it out (what it is)‚ but the King and Queen (born in Hanover) have taught this English chef how to cook it<;/span>;<;/i>;<;span>;<;br>;<;/span>;<;/p>;<;/blockquote>;<;p>;<;span>;<;span>;These notes give us a rare glimpse into the creativity and decision-making process behind the meals served at the palace.<;/span>;<;br>;<;/span>;<;/p>;<;div class=";wp-caption alignnone";>;<;img class=";wp-image-5203244 size-large"; src=";https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/IMG_8042-768x1024.jpeg?x93264"; alt=";"; width=";768"; height=";1024"; srcset=";https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/IMG_8042-768x1024.jpeg 768w‚ https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/IMG_8042-225x300.jpeg 225w‚ https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/IMG_8042-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w‚ https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/IMG_8042-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w‚ https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/IMG_8042-375x500.jpeg 375w‚ https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/IMG_8042-scaled.jpeg 1920w"; sizes=";(max-width: 768px) 100vw‚ 768px";>;<;p class=";wp-caption-description";>;Behind the scenes with Dan Snow and the History Hit production team<;/p>;<;p class=";wp-caption-text";>;Image Credit: History Hit<;/p>;<;/div>;<;h2>;<;b>;Royal Presence‚ Diplomatic Visits and Courtly Servants<;/b>;<;/h2>;<;p>;<;span>;As important guests were ushered into the royal presence‚ they would ascend the grand staircase at Kensington Palace. At the top of the staircase‚ they would enter an intimidating room dominated by a royal canopy and the throne. This room served as a reminder that the servants were not just responsible for the practical aspects of running the palace‚ but also for creating formal situations where the king could receive his subjects and listen to their requests and petitions.<;br>;<;/span>;<;span>;<;br>;<;/span>;<;span>;During the Georgian era‚ the power of the monarch had been curtailed by parliament. However‚ the opportunity to vie for the kings attention at court was still highly prized‚ both at home and abroad. Dan Snow comments<;/span>;<;/p>;<;blockquote>;<;p>;<;span>;Servants worked relentlessly behind the scenes‚ to facilitate the smooth running of diplomatic visits.<;/span>;<;/p>;<;/blockquote>;<;p>;<;span>;One notable meeting that took place at Kensington Palace was between a Cherokee chieftain named Tomochichi and King George II in 1734. This encounter was a crucial early meeting between a British monarch and a delegation of Cherokee Indians‚ symbolizing continued peace between the two parties.<;/span>;<;/p>;<;blockquote>;<;p>;<;i>;<;span>;The British had just established the colony of Georgia in America‚ pretty much on Cherokee landWe hear from accounts the Cherokees face was painted in black and red‚ and he presented George II with sticks with feathers on them‚ a symbol of peace.<;/span>;<;/i>;<;/p>;<;/blockquote>;<;p>;<;span>;Its these kinds of meetings that remind us that the servants‚ the people who dont make the headlines‚ facilitated meetings of huge political importance. Allowing Kensington Palace to remain a centre of power.<;/span>;<;/p>;<;h2>;<;b>;The Importance of Wet Nurses and Royal Heirs<;/b>;<;/h2>;<;p>;<;span>;Kensington Palace was not only a political and social centre but also a family home. The birth and upbringing of healthy children were of utmost importance‚ especially in the early 19th century when the race was on to find an appropriate royal wife for the surviving sons. In 1819‚ a healthy baby girl named Victoria was born at Kensington Palace‚ bringing great success to the project of securing a legitimate heir to the British throne. Victoria would go on to become Queen Empress‚ highlighting the significance of the role played by the servants in birthing and raising royal children.<;/span>;<;span>;<;br>;<;/span>;<;/p>;<;div class=";wp-caption alignleft";>;<;img loading=";lazy"; class=";wp-image-5203243 size-large"; src=";https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Wet-N-urse-1024x574.png?x93264"; alt=";"; width=";1024"; height=";574"; srcset=";https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Wet-N-urse-1024x574.png 1024w‚ https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Wet-N-urse-300x168.png 300w‚ https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Wet-N-urse-768x430.png 768w‚ https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Wet-N-urse-1536x860.png 1536w‚ https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Wet-N-urse-893x500.png 893w‚ https://www.historyhit.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Wet-N-urse.png 1919w"; sizes=";(max-width: 1024px) 100vw‚ 1024px";>;<;p class=";wp-caption-description";>;Mishka Sinha showing Dan Snow Katherine Elliots portrait.<;/p>;<;p class=";wp-caption-text";>;Image Credit: History Hit<;/p>;<;/div>;<;p>;<;span>;<;/span>;<;span>;Taking care of and nourishing royal babies was a task entrusted to the most reliable servants. Wet nurses‚ such as Katherine Elliot (pictured above)‚ played a crucial role in breastfeeding and caring for the young princes and princesses. It was customary for royal and aristocratic women to employ wet nurses‚<;/span>;<;span>;<;br>;<;/span>;<;/p>;<;blockquote>;<;p>;<;span>;<;em>;<;span>;It was mainly aristocratic women and wealthy women who did it (employed a wet nurse) <;/span>;<;/em>;<;/span>;<;/p>;<;/blockquote>;<;p>;<;span>;<;span>;Mishka Sinha tells Dan Snow‚ as it<;/span>;<;span>; allowed them to perform other duties and maintain their social status.<;/span>;<;br>;<;/span>;<;/p>;<;p>;<;span>;But‚ Sinha then goes on to explain that the role of wet nurses was also due to womens fashion at the time.<;/span>;<;/p>;<;blockquote>;<;p>;<;i>;<;span>;because then women wouldnt have to adjust their garments <;/span>;<;/i>;<;i>;<;span>;in order to be able to breastfeed<;/span>;<;/i>;<;/p>;<;/blockquote>;<;p>;<;span>;Wet nurses were well-paid for their services‚ receiving upto 500 in the first year and continued payments for the rest of their lives. Despite the separation from their families and the strict standards of behaviour imposed on them‚ wet nurses were highly respected and held in high regard within the royal household.<;/span>;<;/p>;<;p>;<;span>;The servants at Kensington Palace came from a wide range of backgrounds and played diverse roles in the functioning of the court. From the keepers of the ice and snow to the seamstresses who stitched elaborate court dresses‚ each servant had their own unique contribution to the palace. Through the examination of everyday items and portraits‚ we can gain a deeper understanding of the lives of these individuals and the hierarchies and inequalities they experienced within the palace.<;/span>;<;/p>;<;h2>;<;b>;Conclusion<;/b>;<;/h2>;<;p>;<;span>;Kensington Palace is not just a symbol of royal power and grandeur‚ but also a place where countless servants worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of the court. From the extravagant feasts to the care of royal babies‚ these servants played vital roles in various aspects of royal life. By exploring their stories and shedding light on their lives‚ we can gain a more comprehensive and vivid picture of the history of Kensington Palace.<;/span>;<;/p>;<;p>;<;/p>;<;p>;You can watch <;strong>;Kensington Palace: Untold Lives<;/strong>; now on History Hit<;/p>;
