Lulu Roman, ‘Hee Haw’ Comedian And Gospel Singer, Dies At 78

Lulu Roman, who was best known for her funny character on Hee Haw and later inspiring many through gospel music, has passed away at the age of 78. She died on Wednesday, April 23, in Bellingham, Washington, where she had been living with her son, Damon. She was a woman known for her humor and heart, and Lulu’s life was one of great transformation. She had a challenging childhood before finding fame and faith, but Lulu never lost her spark, despite everything. Those who knew her describe her as joyful, kind, and compassionate. It was not very smooth, but Lulu Roman never gave up Lulu Roman/Instagram Lulu’s early life was anything but easy. She grew up in a home for unwed mothers without ever experiencing adoption. A thyroid condition caused weight gain that made her a target of teasing during childhood. This pain was what she carried for years. But through it all, she learned to laugh. That gift of laughter led her to Hee Haw, where she became a fan favorite. Though she once said she was “hired to be the fat girl,” Lulu quickly proved she was more than a stereotype. The chemistry she had with co-stars, especially Buck Owens, made her one of the show’s most loved faces during its 23-season run. But off-screen, she was struggling. In 1971, she left the show due to drug-related issues. HEE HAW, Lulu Roman, 1969-1993 The turning point for Lulu Roman After becoming a Christian, Lulu did not just find faith but also purpose. And it all began in 1973. She started a new chapter as a gospel singer, pouring her heart into songs like “Failure Isn’t Final” and “The King of Who I Am.” She continued to appear on screen — Hee Haw Honeys, The Love Boat, and Touched by an Angel — and even took on film roles, including Corky in 1972. Riley, Archie Campbell, Gunilla Hutton, (middle): Grandpa Jones, Cathy Baker, Junior Samples, Roy Clark, (front): Buck Owens, Lulu Roman, (Season 1), 1969-93 Beyond these things, Lulu was a mother and a friend. Her former publicist, Ben Laurro, described her as someone who “had profound kindness and empathy for the broken-hearted or lonely because she walked that path herself.” She lost her younger son, Justin, in 2017. Misty Rowe, who co-starred with her, said, “Lulu was a gift in my life… now Lulu is my angel in heaven.” Her fans and family remember her for the light and the joy she brought into their lives. George Wendt’s Final Appearance With ‘Cheers’ Co-stars Was Fitting ‘Farewell’ Reunion

In what turned out to be his final public appearance, actor George Wendt reunited with Cheers co-stars Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson for a conversation filled with humor and cherished memories. The moment aired just weeks before Wendt died peacefully in his sleep on May 20, 2025. He was known to millions as Norm Peterson, but George Wendt was more than just a television regular. He was a kind-hearted man whose legacy continues to live on. How George Wendt rose to fame             View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by People Magazine (@people)   He was born in 1948 in Chicago, and his love for comedy blossomed at Second City, where he also met his wife, Bernadette Birkett. The two spent 47 years together, raising three children — Hilary, Joe, and Daniel. Before Cheers, Wendt made brief appearances on shows like Hart to Hart, M*A*S*H, and Taxi, building a name for himself. His breakthrough came when he auditioned for a single word in the Cheers pilot. Instead, he walked away with the role of Norm Peterson, a character who became a staple of the show for over a decade. He was part of what made Cheers feel like home, and that remains the same. George Wendt/Imagecollect George Wendt left the stage, but not people’s hearts. People truly loved him. In August 2023, Wendt joined Danson and Harrelson on Where Everybody Knows Your Name, where they laughed about old stories, like the time they skipped work to sail with John Ratzenberger and got “called in one by one” for it. The relationship they had was unmistakable, and it was clear that Wendt remained at the heart of the Cheers family until the very end. When he died at 76, it wasn’t just the end of a career; it was the loss of a genuinely good man. “It’s going to take me a long time to get used to this,” Ted Danson said. “I love you, Georgie.” Next up: Connie Francis Finds Surprise TikTok Fame As ‘Pretty Little Baby’ Goes Viral After 63 Years The post George Wendt’s Final Appearance With ‘Cheers’ Co-stars Was Fitting ‘Farewell’ Reunion appeared first on DoYouRemember? - The Home of Nostalgia. George Wendt Honored With Heartfelt Tribute By ‘Cheers’ Bar In Boston

The corner stool George Wendt occupied was empty, but it didn’t feel that way. On Tuesday night, Boston’s Cheers Bar, welcomed longtime fans, teary-eyed tourists, and former co-stars of Cheers who gathered to remember George Wendt, the beloved actor who played Norm. The man behind the bar’s most famous regular passed away at 76, leaving behind a character who still holds a special place in people’s hearts even three decades after the final episode. People came from Chicago to Boston to pay their respects. Fans and colleagues made a toast to him in the ‘Cheers’ bar George Wendt/Everett collection Inside the Beacon Street bar,  a framed photo of Wendt stood next to a fresh pint of beer, his usual topped with foam. A small sign read: “Thank you for all the laughs.” It wasn’t much, but it was honest and fitting for Wendt. “He was the rock of the show,” said Joyce Kulhawik, former WBZ-TV entertainment anchor, who covered the Cheers finale 32 years ago to the day. “George may have been from Chicago, but he looked right at home in Boston.” Fans gathered around the bar, some from California, others from Texas, even a few from across the Atlantic. Most had the same thought: if Norm had a final call, they were going to be there for it. They ordered drinks, swapped stories, and laughed like old friends. “I didn’t even know he passed until we came down here,” one visitor said. “So we raised our glasses for Norm. It felt right.” CHEERS, George Wendt, Shelley Long, John Ratzenberger, Rhea Perlman, Nicholas Colasanto, Ted Danson, (1982-1985), 1982-1993. (c) Paramount TV/ Courtesy: Everett Colleciton. Fans come into the ‘Cheers’ bar to ask for his famous stool For 11 seasons, Norm sat at the same stool. He cracked jokes, ducked work, and became a symbol of comfort for millions. When someone shouted, “Norm!” It wasn’t just about one man; it was about being welcomed, being known, being part of something. FLETCH, George Wendt, 1985, (c)Universal Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection Bar staff and patrons alike remembered how often tourists would walk in asking, “Where’s Norm’s seat?” Frank Irizarry, who works at the bar, admitted he hadn’t watched Cheers until he started working there. Now, even as a newcomer to the show, he gets it. “Norm made Cheers,” he said. “He wasn’t trying to be anything but himself—and people loved that.” Next up: George Wendt’s Final Appearance With ‘Cheers’ Co-stars Was Fitting ‘Farewell’ Reunion The post George Wendt Honored With Heartfelt Tribute By ‘Cheers’ Bar In Boston appeared first on DoYouRemember? - The Home of Nostalgia. ‘Cheers’ Actor George Wendt Passed Away Exactly 32 Years After The Show Ended

George Wendt, who portrayed the character of Norm Peterson on the classic sitcom Cheers, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his Los Angeles home on May 20, 2025, a day that marked the 32nd anniversary of the series finale. Originally intended to be a single-line role, Wendt’s portrayal, however, resonated so strongly with fans of the show that he rose quickly to become a central figure on the show, bagging six consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy. Before his demise, the actor who reunited with his co-stars in 2023 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the beloved sitcom reflected on his time on the show as well as the relationship between him and his co-stars. George Wendt shared his happiness at visiting the iconic bar set before it was sold George Wendt/Imagecollect During the reunion, the cast visited the iconic bar that served as the set of the beloved show. The bar, which drew its inspiration from the Bull and Finch Pub in Boston, was up for auction at the time. The visit was very emotional for them because the bar was a significant piece of the show’s history and held cherished memories for them. Wendt, while speaking to WHDH 7 about the experience, expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to revisit the iconic location before it transitioned to new ownership.
