The word broke on March 26 that NBC News was reversing its decision to hire former Republican Party chair Ronna McDaniel as a political commentator. MSNBC hosts across the schedule broke out into frenzied denunciations of whichever executive who thought that McDaniel should be paid to speak anywhere on this hypnotically/robotically anti-Trump network. In one of her typical half-hour jeremiads‚ Rachel Maddow compared McDaniel to a mobster and a pickpocket. “You wouldn’t—you wouldn’t hire a wise guy‚ you wouldn’t hire a made man‚ like a mobster‚ to work at a DA’s office‚ right? You wouldn’t hire a pickpocket to work as a TSA screener. And so I find the decision to put her on the payroll inexplicable. And I hope they will reverse their decision.” There was no need for NBC News to hire McDaniel. One can look at the election results during her tenure at the Republican National Committee and question her expertise at winning elections. But this mobster talk underlines once again that MSNBC is not a “news” channel. It’s a hyperbole channel‚ constantly fearmongering its audience that the end times are near for democracy. Maddow claimed this hiring wasn’t about Republicans vs. Democrats. It’s about “bad actors trying to use the rights and privileges of democracy to end democracy.” There are no “fact-checkers” who will get in the way of this talk. Maddow is like Bluto in “Animal House” saying‚ “when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.” Facts don’t matter. Rallying your audience is all that matters. This was the essence of Maddow’s rant: I want to associate myself with all my colleagues both at MSNBC and at NBC News who have voiced loud and principled objections to our company putting on the payroll someone who hasn’t just attacked us as journalists‚ but someone who is part of an ongoing project to get rid of our system of government. Someone who still is trying to convince Americans that this election stuff‚ it doesn’t really work. That this last election‚ it wasn’t a real result. That American elections are fraudulent. Every conservative who’s ever watched Maddow lowlights knows that she was a leader in the Collusion Corps‚ someone who obsessed night after night over how the 2016 election was fraudulent because the Russians interfered with it. MSNBC doesn’t suggest that every election is fraudulent. It’s only when Democrats lose that they imply (for years) that it was fraudulent. Since Hillary Clinton lost the election in 2016 and ran around telling people it was stolen from her‚ Maddow has hosted a series of fawnathons with her. They discussed why Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to back Donald Trump in 2016. In 2018‚ Clinton even suggested the Russians may have used the National Rifle Association to funnel money into the election. Maddow concluded by lobbying the executives who allow her on air: “Acknowledge that maybe it wasn’t the right call. It is a sign of strength‚ not weakness‚ to acknowledge when you are wrong. It is a sign of strength. And our country needs us to be strong right now.” That may be the funniest line of all. Maddow is notorious for refusing to concede she’s wrong‚ especially about Trump. In 2019‚ Washington Post media critic Erik Wemple constructed a devastating timeline of all of Maddow’s promotions of the baseless dungpile called the Steele Dossier. He noted Maddow called it “creepy” and “unwarranted” when Michael Isikoff said she’d “given a lot of credence” to the dossier on his podcast. Why couldn’t she acknowledge she was wrong? FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—YouTube has permanently deleted a deceased psychological therapist’s account for using “hate speech‚” citing a 1994 debate in which he referred to a book with the word “sissy” in the title. “By silencing scientific debate they don’t like‚ YouTube is effectively shaping the public conversation about trauma and sexuality‚” Joseph Nicolosi Jr.‚ founder of the Reintegrative Therapy Association and son of the late Joseph Nicolosi Sr.‚ told The Daily Signal in an emailed statement Wednesday. “They’re only letting the public (and people who are struggling with their sexuality) hear one side of the discussion‚ and in doing so‚ they’re misleading the very same people they claim they want to protect—individuals who struggle with trauma and their sexuality‚” Nicolosi added. Nicolosi‚ whose father was born in 1947 and died in 2017‚ now runs his father’s YouTube channel. He says the channel has been active for 15 years‚ with videos receiving more than 1 million total views. Yet on Feb. 28‚ YouTube deleted one of the channel’s videos‚ a debate from 1994‚ for violating the platform’s “hate speech policy.” YouTube cited a time stamp in the video—which remains available on X—where Nicolosi’s father cites the 1987 book “The Sissy Boy Syndrome: The Development of Homosexuality‚” written by psychologist Richard Green. The very next day‚ YouTube flagged another video‚ which the younger Nicolosi told The Daily Signal he thinks was a mistake. The younger Nicolosi appealed the video’s deletion‚ and YouTube restored the account on March 10‚ only to delete it on March 11 for “severe or repeated violations of our hate speech policy.” “After taking another look‚ we can confirm that your channel does not violate our Community Guidelines‚” YouTube initially said in an email. On March 17‚ Nicolosi released a video urging YouTube to restore the account‚ and YouTube responded with a note that the team would review the matter. Young men who struggle with their sexual identity are being denied scientific information on how childhood trauma may have impacted their sexual development.” Nicolosi’s father pioneered what he called “reparative therapy‚” using mainstream talk therapy methods to address underlying psychological issues that lead to unwanted same-sex attraction. Critics brand his practices “conversion therapy‚” claiming that it aims to “turn people straight.” Nicolosi’s Reintegrative Therapy Association says it doesn’t promote or sanction conversion therapy‚ but encourages patient-driven therapy that may alter sexual attraction as a byproduct of addressing underlying trauma. Nicolosi pointed to a Jan. 23‚ 2024‚ report from the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism as a potential motivation for the YouTube ban. The report‚ “Conversion Therapy Online: The Ecosystem in 2023‚” mentions the father and son 30 times and condemns YouTube as “a disaster when it comes to conversion therapy content.” The report urges companies to clamp down on the “medical disinformation” of “conversion therapy‚” warning that it is “dangerous‚ and sometimes deadly‚ to allow pro-conversion therapy material to surface.” The project’s co-founder‚ Heidi Beirich‚ formerly led the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project. As I wrote in my book “Making Hate Pay: The Corruption of the Southern Poverty Law Center‚” the SPLC attacks mainstream conservative and Christian organizations‚ putting them on a “hate map” with chapters of the Ku Klux Klan. The Intelligence Project puts out that map‚ which inspired an act of terrorism in 2012. In January 2022‚ YouTube deleted the Reintegrative Therapy Association’s account for what it called “repeated or severe violations of our Community Guidelines on Hate Speech‚” Fox Business reported. A previous version of the report from the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism and a Forbes article summarizing its claims launched just days before the 2022 ban‚ Nicolosi noted. “The Forbes article repeatedly mentioned Reintegrative Therapy and came out less than three days before our channel was banned‚” Nicolosi said at the time. The story “specifically ordered Big Tech to cancel our content‚” he said. “The Left’s only option is to crush dissent—even when it’s coming from a licensed clinical psychologist like me‚ who’s taking viewers through the vast array of published research findings on the possibility of shifting one way or another on the sexuality spectrum‚” Nicolosi told Fox Business. “By silencing scientific evidence they don’t like‚ they effectively shape the public conversation about the science of sexuality and gender.” YouTube did not respond to The Daily Signal’s request for comment by publication time. According to news reports‚ the Biden administration is considering housing Haitian migrants at the U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay‚ Cuba. The base–which is best known for housing al Qaeda terrorists including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed‚ the mastermind of 9/11–has been used as a migrant detention facility several times in the past. As a policy matter‚ there are suboptimal options‚ bad options‚ and terrible options. But given the Biden administration’s blatant abuse of mass parole for Haitian migrants in the last three years‚ it would be imprudent to import Haitians to the 45-mile square Navy base in southern Cuba as there is a strong likelihood that many‚ if not most‚ would end up in the United States. A Terrible Situation–Again We are not insensitive to the plight of innocent women‚ children‚ and men in Haiti‚ who have suffered under corrupt and incompetent government leadership. Through no fault of their own‚ they live in a country where political incompetence‚ unrest‚ and violence are the norm‚ and that has been the case for decades. In the 20th century alone‚ there have been at least five political coups in Haiti. But the way our country has responded in the past to mercurial flows of Haitians off the island directly affects the volume of Haitians who attempt to flee the island for the United States. We have a long and complicated history of responding to Haitians attempting to come to the United States. President Joe Biden and Congress need to remember that history and should take no action that encourages more Haitians to come to America. History Repeats Itself Cuban President Fidel Castro announced in 1980 that he would allow any Cuban who wanted to leave Cuba to do so‚ reversing his previous prohibition on leaving the communist dictatorship. As a result of Castro’s edict‚ over 1‚700 boats laden with people departed from the Cuban port of Mariel and headed north to Florida. Some 125‚000 Cubans‚ and approximately 25‚000 Haitians entered the United States during the so-called Mariel boatlift. On June 20‚ President Jimmy Carter declared a state of emergency and established the Cuban-Haitian Entrant Program‚ or CHEP. As the Supreme Court recounted in Sale v. Haitian Centers Council‚ Inc.‚ “On September 23‚ 1981‚ the United States and the Republic of Haiti entered into an agreement authorizing the United States Coast Guard to intercept vessels engaged in the illegal transportation of undocumented aliens to our shores.” In 1981‚ President Ronald Reagan issued Presidential Proclamation 4865. This was directed at the “ongoing migration of persons to the United States in violation of our laws” which he called “a serious national problem detrimental to the interests of the United States.” Those arrivals‚ Reagan’s proclamation read‚ had “severely strained the law enforcement resources of the Immigration and Naturalization Service and have threatened the welfare and safety of communities in that region.” As a result‚ Reagan signed Executive Order 12324‚ ordering the suspension of migrants coming to the United States by sea. He also ordered the U.S. Coast Guard to enforce the suspension by interdicting any vessel in international waters carrying migrants and returning the vessel and its occupants “to the country from which it came.” According to a 2011 Congressional Research Service report‚ the Reagan administration established an agreement with Haiti to interdict (i.e.‚ intercept and search) suspected Haitian vessels that departed from Haiti and were bound for the United States. Most Haitians fleeing the country were considered economic migrants. From 1981 through 1990‚ according to the Congressional Research Service‚ “22‚940 Haitians were interdicted at sea. Of this number … 11 Haitians qualified for asylum in the United States.” A coup deposed Haiti’s first democratically elected leader in September of 1991. U.S. officials debated whether Haitians should be forced to return to their country. The Coast Guard suspended repatriations for a period of several weeks. President George H.W. Bush worked with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to persuade countries in the region to take a few hundred Haitians scooped up by the Coast Guard. As described in the Sale Supreme Court case‚ “during the six months after October 1991‚ the Coast Guard interdicted over 34‚000 Haitians.” The Department of Defense set up temporary processing and screening facilities at the U.S. Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay‚ which only had a capacity of approximately 12‚500 persons.  The migrant flows from the island continued. In the first three weeks in May 1992 alone‚ the Coast Guard intercepted 127 rickety vessels carrying 10‚497 illegal aliens‚ causing the Navy to determine that it could no longer accept aliens at Guantanamo.  This left the United States between a rock and a hard place. Bush had to choose between “allowing Haitians into the United States for the screening process or repatriating them without giving them any opportunity to establish their qualifications as refugees.” Bush chose the second option and issued Executive Order 12807‚ which revoked Reagan’s executive order and replaced it with a similar order suspending the entry of illegal aliens coming by sea and repatriating those interdicted beyond the territorial sea of the United States. Upon taking office‚ President Bill Clinton did not modify Bush’s executive order. The Supreme Court held in the Sale decision that neither Section 243(h) of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 nor Article 33 of the United Nations Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees applied to actions taken by the U.S. Coast Guard in international waters. The holding in Sale has not been overruled‚ which means that Biden could‚ with the stroke of a pen‚ order the U.S. Coast Guard to interdict vessels filled with Haitians outside the territorial waters of the United States (12 nautical miles) and return them to Haiti or other countries in the region willing to accept them. Abuse of Mass Parole The United States has been more than generous in its approach to Haitians fleeing their home country. In the past few years alone‚ the Biden administration has adopted policies that have made it significantly easier for thousands of Haitians to enter America and remain here. In 2022‚ the Biden administration resumed the Haitian Family Reunification Parole Program‚ which was first established in 2014. This program allows “eligible U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents to apply for parole for their family members in Haiti.” Further‚ it “enables family members who are approved for parole to come to the United States before their immigrant visa priority dates become current.”   Additionally‚ Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas extended and redesignated Temporary Protection Status for Haiti‚ allowing current recipients to continue receiving its benefits through Aug. 3 upon re-registering. The redesignation allows Haitian nationals “who have been residing in the United States since Nov. 2‚ 2022‚ to apply for [Temporary Protection Status] for the first time.” As of March 2023‚ over 116‚500 Haitian natives are covered by Temporary Protected Status‚ allowing them to work in the United States without fear of deportation. Furthermore‚ on May 17 the Biden administration updated its review process for managing Haitian‚ Cuban‚ Nicaraguan‚ and Venezuelan arrivals‚ stating that “The U.S. government may grant advance travel authorization to up to 30‚000 noncitizens each month to seek parole ….” Under this program‚ 85‚300 Haitians were granted parole in the United States from January to September of 2023. Now the Biden administration is proposing a “solution” for Haitian migrants which could have significant repercussions–housing them at Guantanamo Bay. At best‚ this is a careless proposal given the extremely permissive policies that the Biden administration has already adopted towards Haitian nationals. Instead‚ Biden should‚ like his predecessors‚ order the U.S. Coast Guard to interdict Haitians in international waters and forcibly repatriate them to Haiti. Our nation’s Declaration of Independence begins with the famous statement that “all men … are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights‚ that among these are life‚ liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” But according to the latest Gallup World Happiness Report‚ Americans’ success in the “pursuit of happiness” is diminishing. For the first time since the annual report was first compiled in 2012‚ the United States is not among the top 20 happiest countries in the world. In this latest 2024 report‚ the United States ranks 23 in the world‚ down from No. 15 in 2023. A large factor influencing the drop in happiness in the United States is particularly bad results among young Americans. For those age 30 and below‚ the United States ranks 62 in the world. This compared to those age 60 and above‚ for whom the United States ranks No. 10. What’s going on with our youth? A recent Wall Street Journal article about so-called Gen Z‚ those born between 1997 and 2012‚ identifies members of Gen Z who are 18 and up as “America’s Most Disillusioned Voters.” The headline continues‚ “Young adults are now more skeptical of government and pessimistic about the future than any other living generation before them.” Per Wall Street Journal polling reported in the article‚ “More than three-quarters of voters under 30 think the country is moving in the wrong direction—a greater share than any other age group. Nearly one-third of voters under 30 have an unfavorable view of both [Joe] Biden and [Donald] Trump‚ a higher number than all older voters. Sixty-three percent of young voters think neither party adequately represents them.” In the 18-25 age group‚ 28% say they have “hardly any confidence” in the Supreme Court‚ 34% in Congress‚ 37% in the executive branch‚ and 52% in the press. A young USA Today columnist named Sara Pequeno shared her views about what’s going on and why. The explanations she ticks off are a generation coming of age during the COVID-19 pandemic‚ an explosion of the worst inflation in years‚ and‚ she adds‚ the impact of the Supreme Court overturning of Roe v. Wade‚ which she calls “the loss of a right that our parents had—the right to an abortion nationwide.” She sites Gallup showing that 89% of those 18-29 years old support legal abortion under any or certain circumstances. We’re talking here about our nation’s future‚ and this dismal picture should trouble us all. Let me suggest a different perspective on this problem. This youngest generation is also coming of age during a time of unprecedented expansion of government‚ meaning an unprecedented incursion into the individual freedom of every American. The federal government is now taking one-quarter of the American economy. Federal debt‚ equal to our entire gross domestic product‚ is projected by the Congressional Budget Office to keep growing. This is all on the shoulders of these young Americans. Regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic‚ a new study published by the Committee to Unleash Prosperity‚ authored by scholars from the Hoover Institution‚ Johns Hopkins University‚ the University of Chicago‚ and the Committee to Unleash Prosperity‚ shows the costs of the shutdowns in the way of added deaths‚ massive economic costs‚ and damage caused by school shutdowns overwhelm any benefits that were gained. Regarding abortion‚ we must note that these young Americans are growing up in an environment of the collapse of the American family‚ traditional marriage‚ and birth rates. Let’s be aware‚ as we enter the season of Easter for Christians and Passover for Jews‚ that the growth of government tracks the diminishing of faith. To go back to the Declaration of Independence‚ the rights the Founders noted were sourced in our Creator. The Founders who signed the declaration did so “with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence.” This was meant to be a free nation under God.
