Wynonna Judd Opens Up About Moving Forward After The Tragic Loss Of Her Mother, Naomi: “There Is Life After Death”

An inspiring story as a result of immense pain and tragedy. Of course, Wynonna Judd has been through a LOT in her personal life over the years, notably with her mother, Naomi, the other half of legendary country dup The Judds, who sadly died by suicide in April of 2022. The Judds were one of the most successful country duos of all time, signing with RCA Records in 1983. Naomi and Wynonna Judd released six records between 1984, kicking things off with their debut record, Wynonna & Naomi, and ending their career with Love Can Build a Bridge.  Both were impressive vocalists with a ton of talent that meshed perfectly with the natural chemistry of being mother and daughter. While they certainly had their issues over the years, Wynonna loved her mother deeply and was obviously devastated when she passed away. But she’s managed to turn that pain into something beautiful and it hasn’t slowed down her career much at all. In fact, Wynonna has been out on the road performing her first two solo albums for fans who have been with her from the start. In an interview with Clint Black on his Circle Network show Talking in Circles with Clint Black, she got very honest about how hard it has been and why she’s chosen to view it as a lesson, rather than letting it hold her back and play the victim (which I think she has every right to do because I can’t imagine how traumatic the last several years have been): “So this tour is me going through the first two albums. And I know I’m gonna look at the audience, and I’m going to see some mother who now has two kids, maybe even a grandchild, who was there in 1992-ish, that’s when it came out. She’ll be sitting in the audience and I’ll be singing it now, so I’m going through the record, each song as it was on the record. And I’m doing two albums in one night which will be a celebration of just how far I’ve come, that I got through it. I’m better not bitter for all the crap that’s happened to me. That’s the key. I think you have to get to a place in your life where you realize you’re not a victim. And all this crap has happened to me with Mom committing suicide last year, I had a choice to make. I can either let that define me, or give me permission to show everybody and myself that I could do it, even in spite of the hellish time period that I went through. That I could still sing, and so I went on tour, because I was fans bought the tickets and they were there for me, and I thought I’m not gonna stay home and complain. I’m gonna go to work.” Wynonna showed up at her Country Music Hall of Fame induction the day after her mother passed, if that gives you any indication of what an incredibly strong woman she is, and of course, there are times that the grief catches up to her, like on holidays her mom loved in Halloween and Christmas: “We live on the farm together. Ashley lives here in the house I gave her, I live in the middle, and and mom‘s over here. So I was literally, you know, just a short side-by-side drive. and when she left, I was so devastated, I thought, I don’t know if I’m gonna make it through this. I’m so lost. Because we take so much for granted, don’t we? Until it’s gone, and when it’s gone, it’s like oh my God. Just like with Christmas, her whole thing was Christmas and Halloween. And she did all the parties, and she was the party girl. and I’m shy quiet and I have the 40 animals and I’m very solid. She’s the outgoing one, she’s extrovert I’m an omnivore which is both I can do this or I’m just in my farm clothes.” She also talked about the “helpless” feeling that comes along with losing a parent in that way (Clint Black also lost his father to suicide), and how she never could’ve imagined how much pain her mother was in and how she appeared so “okay” on the outside while she was really “crumbling” on the inside. Wynonna has managed to find hope, though, in raising her granddaughter which has given her a very different perspective on life. She has found new purpose in her music and tour, and now sees it as an opportunity to encourage others and bring awareness to what her mom was going to so someone else might feel less alone: “But now that she’s gone, I didn’t know what to do Clint. You know you told me that your father committed suicide, so we have that in common. And what do you do with that kind of crap that happens to you? You feel so helpless, and there’s a mystery there as to why. So I had to go through that like you did, right? Well you kind of had more of a why, I think, than I do. Because everybody thought she was okay, everybody thought everything’s okay and it’s not okay. You don’t know what’s going on, I was on tour and distracted. You don’t know how bad it was, and I really didn’t, because she’s such a talker and a teacher to everybody else. She was a light to everybody else, but inside, she was crumbling and it’s just a weird time. And this past year, I’ve learned so much about myself, and now that I’m with my grand baby 24/7, I’m learning that there is life after death and if I can go out on this tour, this is heavy, and I can go out onstage and I can help someone decide to stay instead of leaving, then I’ve done my job. And I just know that what we’re going through after our parents death is, I’m now an orphan I have to decide whether the cup is half full or half empty.” It’s simply inspiring the way Wynonna speaks so publicly about such a tragic event in her life, and her attitude and outlook on it is admirable, to say the least. I’m sure she still hurts a lot, every day, but she’s slowly picked up the pieces and continued touring and doing what she loves, which I’m sure helps her feel close to her mom, as well. You can watch the interview here, and I highly recommend it because Wynonna is an impressive woman with a lot of great insight and an amazing story: Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or text Crisis Text Line at 741741 if you or someone you know is considering suicide. The post Wynonna Judd Opens Up About Moving Forward After The Tragic Loss Of Her Mother, Naomi: “There Is Life After Death” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.

Gene Simmons recalls incredible story about Kiss Army

One of the biggest fan clubs in the world, the Kiss Army played a crucial role in helping Kiss achieve fame in the early days. The band's co-founder, bassist, and singer Gene Simmons recalled in an interview with Q104 New York the origin of the name and how that club was born. Gene Simmons recalls incredible story about Kiss Army "There was a guy in Terre Haute, Indiana, as a matter of fact. And in the early days, radio didn't play Kiss because we didn't do John Denver kind of namby-pamby stuff. Okay, John Denver fans don't write for me. I like him too, he's fine. We just didn't do the 'la de dah' kinds of songs. We liked to turn the guitars up and have fun, and radio wouldn't play us. So this one guy, Starkey, his name was not Ringo, called the radio station, which was a small building outside of town, 'Play, Kiss!' 'I'm sorry, kid, we don't play that song.' And he threatened him. He said, 'If you don't play Kiss by 5 pm tomorrow, the Kiss Army will surround your building' and everything." "Of course, they did not (play). So what happened? The cover of the newspaper, 'The Kiss Army Invades WXYZ (WVTS), whatever.' That's where the name came from. And by the way, afterwards, they played Kiss. Because they knew that we knew what their home address was, and when they weren't home, we might set their pets on fire. There's that. That was a decent joke, you could have laughed at that," he said (Transcribed by Ultimate Guitar). After that episode, in 1975, the Kiss Army fan club was officially founded, and through a paid membership, fans could purchase shirts, posters, books, and other band merchandise. Curiously, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley will play at the "Kiss Army Storms Vegas", which is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the fanclub. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mt2n5Zc4q1I&t=32sThe post Gene Simmons recalls incredible story about Kiss Army appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

Metallica concert saved a family’s life from a deadly crash

Being fans of Metallica saved a family life in Goodview, Virginia last May 6. The couple David and Kristin McKee said that they went to bed earlier that day than usual because on the next day they were going to drive their 14-year old daughter to a Metallica show. Usually they would still be in their living room watching TV if it wasn't for that show. That change saved their lives since an out-of-control pickup truck crashed through the front of their home about 2 am that night. Kristin said she thanks God everyday that Metallica saved them She recalled what happened in an interview with local TV news station WDBJ7. “(I asked David,) ‘Do you wanna sit up?’ And he was like, ‘Nah, I think I just wanna go on to bed.’ I said, ‘I’ll go on to bed too.’ Then, just a few hours later, we heard a loud explosion, glass shattered. It was just madness from that point on.” “We were so fortunate that, that night, my daughter could have walked down that hallway and found us in the rubble. I thank God every day, and Metallica, for saving us.” Their daughter Madeleine discovered Metallica through the song "Master of Puppets", which was part of an incredible scene on the fourth season of Netflix's "Stranger Things".  “That was mostly when it started a lot more for me,” she said. Their house is currently under repair and they might be able to move back within six months. Curiously Metallica announced recently the documentary "Metallica Save My Life" which will show the band's fanbase and their personal stories. The film will be directed by Jonas Åkerlund. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vaL0GF6Fmk&pp=ygUVbWV0YWxsaWNhIHNhdmUgZmFtaWx50gcJCY0JAYcqIYzvThe post Metallica concert saved a family’s life from a deadly crash appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

Pete Townshend’s opinion on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Pete Townshend’s opinion on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

The guitarist, occasional singer, and main songwriter of The Who, Pete Townshend, is one of the most important figures in Rock and Roll music. He has been a true inspiration for countless musicians since the 1960s and played a fundamental role in the revolution brought about by the British Invasion. Townshend has always had a broad musical taste, which was evident in his songwriting for The Who, but especially in his solo albums. Over the decades, he has spoken about many bands, and one of them was the supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. What is Pete Townshend's opinion on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Pete is actually a huge fan of the band and loves Stephen Stills as a guitar player. He explained his admiration for them in an interview back in 1995 (Transcribed by Rock and Roll Garage). "Stephen Stills is one of the great, great geniuses of guitar, of every style of guitar. The problem is that he's never really had much of an idea on how to deal with that. (Also) with the fact that not everybody in the world has recognized that. Probably somebody else that suffered from the presence of someone like Jimi Hendrix. Maybe took some of his thunder because he was not just a great guitar player but also a great performer." "But their (CSNY) vocal style was groundbreaking in a way because it was arranged. Stephen could write charts and I'm not sure that everybody in the band could read charts but he could write them, so he could organize in a traditional way. The harmonic structure of Crosby, Stills & Nash was new and unique, very personal. I think he controlled, one tends to think that it's about Crosby and Graham's voice." Pete Townshend continued: "But for me the halcyon years of Crosby, Stills & Nash was when they imported a real human being called Neil Young. Once Neil Young was in the band, wow, that was some band. Great couple of records they made. Neil Young is still out there, (he) is the only one still doing it, the only one left, the only man who is still out there, his beard growing, doing MTV Unplugged and he believes, you know. I got passion while I'm on stage but I don't know if I really believe the way he believes. But yeah, they were a good band," Pete Townshend said. The Who was formed in 1964, four years before the supergroup CSNY but obviously, the members of the group were active in other bands since the early 60s. David Crosby was a previous member of The Byrds, Graham Nash from The Hollies and Stephen Stills/Neil Young were members of Buffalo Springfield. How CSN inspired Pete Townshend to "create" the guitar tech job https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfjPjQvXdcg&pp=ygUcY3Jvc2J5IHN0aWxscyBuYXNoIGFuZCB5b3VuZw%3D%3D Townshend had the chance to see the band playing live and also be a good friend of them. He even told Guitar.com that he invented the "guitar tech" job after being inspired by Crosby, Stills and Nash. "(...) I guess you can say I invented the guitar tech! Because I can remember going to see Crosby, Stills, and Nash in a session. They were restringing their own guitars. Or, in Stephen Stills’ case, he would only string some guitars. Because there was this one Martin there that he said to me, ‘I’ve never changed the strings on this guitar, and I never will unless one breaks’ That was part of the sound of them," he said. In 1969, both groups were already quite famous and were part of the historical Woodstock festival. The British band played on saturday and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young on sunday. At the time the American band had just released their self-titled debut album "Crosby, Stills & Nash" (1969). During that live performance they were also accompanied by the bassist Greg Reeves and the drummer Dallas Taylor. CSNY, considering all the eras of the band, as quartet, trio and duo, sold an estimated amount of more than 70 million copies worldwide. With all the four or three members, they released 8 studio albums. The most recent one is "Looking Forward" in 1999.The post Pete Townshend’s opinion on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.
