Five Quick Things: No, Bill Maher Is Not Your Friend

Occasionally, there are those of us on the right who fall into the mistaken habit of believing things about comedian and HBO talk host Bill Maher that are not true. For example, Maher is some sort of honest broker with whom we might do business. I’ve fallen into this trap myself. Just the other day, I saw a clip from Maher in which, discussing the Harrison Butker imbroglio, he questioned whether Butker’s advice to women that they consider pursuing motherhood as a vocation was so terrible as an alternative to seeking fulfillment through an advanced degree from an “a**hole factory” such as Harvard. (READ MORE: The Spectacle Ep. 98: These Are the Monsters of Our Society) He actually gets it, I thought. But Maher doesn’t. You should see Bill Maher as something of a weathervane. Maher represents the Hollywood Left’s limited ability to recognize how out of touch it is with the rest of society. Sometimes it’s refreshing to recognize there is such an ability, and that’s tempting. For example, the Disney wokesters booked him on The View, and he said things that made those women feel all icky: But it’s all fool’s gold. Bill Maher is not somebody you can do business with. 1. And Why Would You Want To? Maher is not “brilliant.” That’s idiotic. He’s a garden-variety gutless 1990s liberal who — if he deserves credit, it’s for realizing this — has been left by the roadside by the screeching Maoists who have taken over the cultural institutions the liberals used to run. There are lots of old-school liberals who woke up one day and found themselves mugged by that reality. They’ve generally fallen into two camps. The more prevalent of the two are the Nancy Pelosis and Joe Bidens of the world who were so starved for power and relevance that they gleefully modulated what principles they had and took that Hard Left turn when Barack Obama demanded it as part of his takeover of the Democrat Party. Most of the Hollywood Left did the same thing. (READ MORE: Ohio Legislature Refuses to Bail Out Biden’s Incompetence. Good for It.) The second camp is the ones who got red-pilled, at least to an extent. The Bari Weisses, Matt Taibbis, Davie Rubins, Joe Rogans, and Tulsi Gabbards of the world are examples. Most of them are not conservatives, but they certainly have become people with whom conservatives can do business. Maher should be in the second camp, but he can’t bring himself to do it. He went on Megyn Kelly’s podcast and proved that while being utterly torn apart by Kelly: Bill Maher Went on the @megynkelly Show and Let's Just Say, It Didn't Go Well pic.twitter.com/CMmEgAf40T — Chief Nerd (@TheChiefNerd) May 22, 2024 So the question is why would we continue to care what comes out of this guy’s mouth? He hasn’t considered both sides. He hasn’t thought much of any of this stuff through. And at the end of the day, he’s still willing to shill for the Left’s stupid narratives. You would think Maher would have known not to peddle the “he’s a criminal” narrative in front of Kelly when it came to the Mar-A-Lago document imbroglio. Getting systematically dismantled to such an extent that he was reduced to mumbling that she might know more about the issue than he did would be a career killer for Maher in a sane society. Does he run a decent show on HBO? That’s debatable. It’s certainly more watchable than the other thing, the one with the boorishly unfunny beta Brit on Sunday nights, but that’s a very low standard for someone we’re supposed to hold up as an influencer of opinion. Maybe the last comedian worthy of that was George Carlin. It certainly isn’t Bill Maher. If I promise to stop caring what this whiny has-been has to say, will you join me? 2. Nine Times Melissa and I did a segment of the Spectacle this week on Joe Biden’s utterly disastrous, race-baiting commencement address at Morehouse College in Atlanta last weekend. If you haven’t seen it, here it is: The Spectacle Podcast: Joe Biden Is Racist. His Commencement Speech at Morehouse Proved It. with hosts @MelissaTweets and @RVIVRdotcom Available on @rumblevideo and all podcast platforms. pic.twitter.com/VIG9RPVZbJ — The American Spectator (@amspectator) May 22, 2024 What we didn’t talk about, but certainly could have, was that Biden double-dipped in his racial pandering when he shuffled off to Detroit to speak to an NAACP confab there. (READ MORE: Biden’s NAACP Speech Signals an Overlooked Iceberg Ahead) What he said to that gathering was certainly noxious from a race-baiting perspective, and that would have made it noteworthy enough as a disqualifier for Biden’s re-election. But the ugly tone of the thing was overshadowed by something else — namely that the White House had to issue no less than NINE walkbacks for gross factual inaccuracies that escaped Biden’s lips. The most obvious one, and the one you’ve likely seen, was Biden’s conflating the Great Recession with the COVID pandemic and claiming that when he was Vice President, Barack Obama sent him to Detroit to take care of COVID. Yikes. But there were lots more: BREAKING: The White House was forced to make corrections to President Biden’s NAACP speech NINE times tonight, despite him using a teleprompter. We are a laughing stock. 6 more months and we have the chance to clean up this absolute mess. pic.twitter.com/6E4V8FrYjD — JACK (@jackunheard) May 23, 2024 The one I liked best was when he said the Jan. 6 protesters were “erectionists.” Was he thinking about little girls at the time? Tara Reade? Jim Jordan’s take on this was unfriendly, but not wrong: Another day, another speech transcript that the White House has to secretly edit to cover for Joe Biden. Did the Biden DOJ do the same for his interview with Robert Hur? That’s just one of the reasons why we need the audio tapes.https://t.co/37k2lVLrrh — Rep. Jim Jordan (@Jim_Jordan) May 22, 2024 This isn’t working. It can’t continue like this. 3. So…Michelle? I’ve gone back and forth on the question, and ultimately I’d come down on the side of saying the Democrats aren’t going to pack Biden off to the glue factory at their convention and parachute Michelle Obama in as the nominee. I….think…I’m still on that side. Then again there was this press release that went out Thursday: Today, When We All Vote launched the Culture of Democracy Tour, a summer of action to register, educate and engage thousands of voters and volunteers. The Culture of Democracy Tour brings voting to popular culture through events, sweepstakes, campaigns, voter registration drives and more in partnership with the organization’s thousands of volunteers and partners. More than 200 partners have joined When We All Vote’s Culture of Democracy Collective — a network of leading national and community organizations, including sports, corporate and entertainment partners, committed to registering, educating and mobilizing voters. Members include Essence, BET, Lyft, Girls Inc., NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Global Black Economic Forum, Lime, the Divine Nine National Pan-Hellenic Organizations, VoteRiders and the Executive Leadership Council, as well as major sport teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Dream, Dallas Wings, Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Mystics, New England Revolution, Houston Dynamo and more. “At a time when fewer young people are identifying with political parties, the work of nonpartisan organizations like When We All Vote has never been more critical,” said Beth Lynk, Executive Director of When We All Vote. “Through the Culture of Democracy Tour this summer, we will bring voting to the culture and meet voters where they are — transforming how they view and participate in democracy and taking this momentum to the biggest stop of all: the ballot box.” When We All Vote is Michelle Obama’s project. She’s the founder and co-chair. It’s expected she’ll be on hand for most of these dog-and-pony shows. So….hmmmm. I’m not changing my opinion, yet, but….hmmmmm. 4. Hey, Look! They’re Going After Monopolistic Corporations With Antitrust Actions! Oh, Wait… This would be about Meta. Or Google. Or Apple. Or Amazon. Or Microsoft. Or any of the Big Media, Big Pharma, Big Auto, or Big Finance oligarchs, right? Well, not exactly. The U.S. Department of Justice is suing to break up Live Nation, the parent company of Ticketmaster, over alleged antitrust violations. The lawsuit, joined by 30 states and filed Thursday, follows a DOJ investigation into whether Live Nation maintains a monopoly in the ticketing industry, a probe launched in 2022 and bolstered by fan complaints after a botched rollout for tickets to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. “We allege that Live Nation relies on unlawful, anticompetitive conduct to exercise its monopolistic control over the live events industry in the United States at the cost of fans, artists, smaller promoters, and venue operators,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland in a statement. “The result is that fans pay more in fees, artists have fewer opportunities to play concerts, smaller promoters get squeezed out, and venues have fewer real choices for ticketing services. It is time to break up Live Nation-Ticketmaster.” Shares of Live Nation were down 6% on Thursday. In a statement, Live Nation said the DOJ’s allegations of a monopoly are “absurd.” I have no particular brief for Live Nation or Ticketmaster. They definitely seem to have a stranglehold on live events that could well be considered monopolistic, and if that arouses the suspicion of the Biden Justice Department I’ll listen to the argument. But you’re going to dust off the antitrust laws and take somebody down with them and it’s Ticketmaster? Really? Absurd is a good word. Do something about that oligopoly in entertainment media in which 90 percent of all the TV channels are owned by six massive conglomerates, or the vertically- and horizontally-integrated monoliths dominating the tech space, and then we’ll say it’s time to take a poke at Ticketmaster. We do need to channel Teddy Roosevelt a little and put those antitrust laws to work. That’s a column, or probably more like a book chapter, in itself. But for Team Biden to sic them on Ticketmaster is just a sop to the Gen Z crowd while leaving the big game still roaming the Serengeti. Pathetic. 5. Inside The NBA Is Going Away I’m a casual NBA fan at best, something that won’t likely be fixed until Zion Williamson can actually play an entire season without disappearing to the injured list the minute the Pelicans ask him to play meaningful minutes in the postseason, but I will say this — Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Charles Barkley cutting up on the set of Inside The NBA on TNT makes that show far and away the best sports talk program on television. But soon the show will go by the boards, it seems, because Warner Brothers Discovery, the mega-conglomerate that owns TNT, is getting out of the business of televising the NBA, and now all the rights will go to ESPN, NBC, and Amazon. Maybe NBC or Amazon will get the gang back together and keep the show going. But it doesn’t look like Barkley thinks that will happen. Charles Barkley says morale sucks amid the uncertainty of "Inside the NBA" moving forward. And discusses the possibility of hiring the crew to his production company, continuing to do the show, and selling it. pic.twitter.com/gLoiKm7SM3 — Dan Patrick Show (@dpshow) May 23, 2024 ESPN will certainly not reconstruct that show. ESPN’s sports shows are unwatchable food fights without allowing for actual personalities like the ones on Inside the NBA. Barkley might actually have the right idea, which is to take the show independent and just put it on the web with a YouTube channel or some other such distribution platform. Corporate media sucks anyway. Let the good times stream. The post Five Quick Things: No, Bill Maher Is Not Your Friend appeared first on The American Spectator | USA News and Politics.

The Spectacle Ep. 111: Trump Is Stuck in Kangaroo Court in New York. That’s Not a Bad Thing.

In many ways, former President Donald Trump being stuck in a New York kangaroo court is one of the best things that could have happened to his campaign. Universities Must End DEI and Implement DEI

This is the final installment of my series proposing ways to fix the moral and educational rot that has infested American colleges and universities. Previously, I have proposed (i) enacting legislation making university trustees collectively and individually liable in tort for acts of misfeasance and nonfeasance in carrying out their fiduciary duties; (ii) implementing a two-year moratorium barring all foreign money and foreign students from entering American campuses; (iii) terminating academic faculty tenure; and (iv) ending federal and state involvement in the student-loan business. Here, I propose legislating an end to identity DEI and mandating implementation of viewpoint DEI. READ MORE from Dov Fischer: Get the Feds and States Out of the Student Loan Business For several years, universities have been imposing on faculty and students a regime of “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” (DEI). In great measure, as Tablet’s Michael Lind has shown, this DEI emerged from past campus riots over any number of public issues that radical-left students used as leverage to convert their colleges and universities into left-wing indoctrination centers. They used the Michael Brown incident (falsely highlighted by the “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” lie) in Ferguson, Missouri, and later the George Floyd incident (elevated into the fraudulent “Black Lives Matter” scam), to demand the hiring of more black faculty and student interns, the admission of more black students, the establishment of black studies majors and curricula, and even the leveling of requirements on all students, even in other disciplines, to take some kind of mandatory racial studies course in pursuing their own respective majors. They used radical “climate change” issues to demand the hiring of more environmental studies faculty and student interns, the establishment of environmental studies majors and curricula, and even the leveling of requirements on all students to take a mandatory environmental course in pursuing their own respective majors. They used the #MeToo lies and defamation regarding Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the repeal of Roe v. Wade, and similar excuses to demand the hiring of more women faculty and student interns, the admission of more women students, the establishment of women and gender studies majors and curricula, and even the leveling of requirements on all students to take some kind of mandatory course in that field. Presently, they are attempting to leverage their opposition to Israel’s rightful existential battle for survival as a launching point to demand the hiring of more “Palestinian” faculty and student interns, the admission of more “Palestinian” students, the establishment of “Palestinian” or other one-sided “Middle East studies” majors and curricula, and even the leveling of requirements on all students to take some kind of mandatory course in “Palestinian” or one-sided “Middle East studies” while pursuing their own respective majors. In other words, even a student majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics — the “geek” majors — would be denied graduation from college or a graduate degree from a university if he or she had not attended at least one course in the demanded fields of woke “studies.” Faculty and other university employees now typically find themselves required, as part of their employment obligations, to sit through a day or more of “training” (i.e., brainwashing) in such reeducation programs. (I once was an attorney at Heller, Ehrman, White, and McAuliffe, a once prominent but hopelessly woke major law firm headquartered in San Francisco. The company compelled the entire legal team — each and every attorney in the office, composing some 100 attorneys, many of whom were so top-notch that they billed at $500–$1,000 an hour in an era when $500 was $500 — to sit several times, for six or eight hours each session, to be “trained” by some “sensitivity expert.” None of us was racist, sexist, or homophobic. Our woke law firm had many women, BIPOC, and gay partners, and we all got along famously. But we were required to sit through the most foolish and demeaning lecturing and role playing, losing days of lucrative productivity. I still remember one of the firm’s most respected partners and main “rainmakers” (i.e., a person who brought in many of the highest-paying corporate clients) — who, also like me, was a closet conservative — telling me: “Dov, I swear, one of these days this idiotic leftist garbage is going to bankrupt this place.” And he was right. The gigantic and fabulously lucrative law firm went broke two years later. Long before Budweiser and Target, this was the original case of “go woke, go broke.” ) The idea of DEI is to require “diversity” — i.e., a diverse pool of identities: not only privileged white males but also women, blacks, Hispanics, gays, transgenders, and Native Americans. For the most part, Asians are not included and — like Jews — actually are excluded to make room for all that inclusivity. The irony is even more manifest in that women now outnumber men in the social sciences departments at most colleges and universities. That’s the “D” and the “I.” The “E” stands for “equity.” “Equity” does not mean the same as “equality.” “Equity” means equal outcomes. Thus, “equality” means equal opportunity. With equality, everyone gets the same opportunity to compete on the same level playing field. A great example is professional sports. If you can pitch fastballs at 100 miles per hour and mix them with breaking curves, sliders, and changeups, you have a better chance of beating your competitors for a place on a major league pitching roster. That is “equality.” Equity, by contrast, merely promises equal results blended with racial, ethnic, or gender “diversity.” So if a basketball team already has outstanding basketball players, of whom 90 percent are black and none is Asian or Jewish, equity would require a New York basketball team like the Knicks to dump five (one-third) of its 15 roster players to make room for Jews to compose approximately 16 percent of the team and Asians to compose 17 percent, even if the only dribbling they can do is at their mouths. Presumably, that would mean two Jews, two Asians, and Karl Taro Greenfeld or someone else from this list of Asian Jews. The current state of moral and academic rot in America’s “higher education” stems, in no small measure, from the enforcement of identity DEI on the campuses. As I previously have written: [U]niversity millions are spent on DEI — “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” — departments, racist offices fabricated out of whole cloth. For example — deep breath — the University of Michigan reported spending $18 million a year on its DEI department and 142-person staff. DEI? More like DIE. The DEI vice provost is paid $380,000 plus all benefits imaginable. Talk about privilege. But that’s not all! A closer investigation later found that UMich actually has more than 500 staff working full- or part-time on DEI with an aggregate salary-and-benefits annual cost of $30.68 million. As a result, whole pockets of students are admitted into universities not for their stellar academic potential but because they meet the “diversity” targets, whether religious, ethnic, or racial. That even leads universities to admit disproportionate numbers of foreign students from Arab Muslim countries like Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabi because (i) as foreigners, they are charged full freight (paid for them by their foreign governments) without eligibility for in-state tuition discounts or charitable scholarships; and (ii) they check off several DEI boxes: Muslim (minority religion), Arab (minority ethnicity), perhaps female (the DEI trifecta), and perhaps non-white skin color (i.e., Four Aces). Such students manifestly have been at the fore of the recent campus riots and lawbreaking. The United States Supreme Court has ruled that “affirmative action” no longer is tenable (Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College, 600 U.S. 181). Accordingly, the DEI discussion actually should be over — and that indeed is an important reason why it now is called “DEI” instead of “affirmative action.” By playing word games, a favorite manipulation played by the Left, the target keeps moving. “Quotas” are illegal? Call them “affirmative action.” You will lose your preferred medical insurance under Obamacare? Call it “affordable health.” The Left wants to facilitate keeping the families of illegal immigrants in the country? Call them “Dreamers.” The term “homosexual” is uncomfortable? Call them “gay.” It is horrifying to perpetrate barbaric sex change surgery on kids? Call it “gender affirming.” Liberalism and its failures have so ruined the country that, ever since Michael Dukakis, no one wants to be identified as a “card-carrying ACLU member”? So, “let’s stop calling ourselves ‘liberals’ because now, instead, we are ‘progressives.’” Arab Muslim countries tried to eradicate Israel from the face of the earth and to “drive the Jews into the sea” but lost in 1947, 1956, and 1967? So, let’s fabricate a new “nation” for Gaza and Judea and Samaria, and let’s call them “Palestinians,” and let’s rename those regions of mainland Israel “Palestine.” Give it half a century, and no one will be any the wiser. Don’t wanna say outright: “Kill the 7 million Jews of Israel”? So, chant “from the river to the sea.” Impossible to call openly for killing fetuses in the ninth month? That’s OK: call it “late term” and mix it with “pro-choice” (but don’t mistakenly use that latter term when inner-city families plead for government stipends and vouchers to enroll their kids in great schools). It is not mere coincidence that so many of the incompetent university presidents now exposed all are DEI appointments: Claudine Gay, Harvard’s first black president and first plagiarizing president; Liz Magill, Pennsylvania’s third consecutive woman president; Nemat “Minouche” Shafik, Columbia’s first woman president and first Muslim-reared president. This is the price of DEI. Identity DEI must be abolished. But a new DEI must be implemented, by legislation if so needed: viewpoint DEI, i.e., diversity of political and social views, equality of opportunity for people of diverse views, and inclusion of varied views. Surveys leave no doubt that college and university social science departments are top-heavy with tenured woke progressives. For example, they constitute 82 percent of faculty at Harvard. They self-select their successors because applicants must go through the respective departments to receive a tenure-track appointment. The department members review applicants’ academic credentials: schools attended, grades, life achievements. And then they review whether they are left-wing, neutral, or fascist (i.e., conservative). How can they possibly know? Easy: They look at the topics the applicants chose to study and research more deeply for their college and graduate school term papers and dissertations, their posts on social media, the people whom they adduce as references.  Here, for example, is how DEI plagiarist President Claudine Gay describes her research: My research and teaching interests are in the fields of American political behavior … [and] minority politics … My research has considered … how neighborhood environments shape racial and political attitudes among Black Americans; the roots of competition and cooperation between minority groups, with a particular focus on relations between Black Americans and Latinos; the effects of majority-minority districting on legislative responsiveness; processes of immigrant political incorporation; how political knowledge and policy cross-pressures shape partisan attachments among Black Americans; … shifts in the political representation of black voters; and a collaborative project with Jennifer Hochschild and Ariel White examining the effects of survey context on the measurement of linked fate. Yes, she says she studied other things and even worked with someone named “White,” but anyone can tell where her viewpoints lie. Certainly, that is perfectly fine (if the research and writing are her own and not someone else’s). That is how social sciences departments figure out how a job applicant thinks and believes. Because of the lopsided dominance of leftist-progressive-woke professors in university social sciences departments, students became indoctrinated and brainwashed. I went through four years of it at Columbia University and then three more years at the University of California, Los Angeles, Law School. Almost every college class had Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Frantz Fanon on the reading lists. Never heard of Milton Friedman, Ayn Rand, or William F. Buckley Jr. At UCLA Law School, it was the same — and still is: Every single professor either was extreme liberal, outright socialist or Marxist, or — at best — agnostic as to personal beliefs. For example, my first-year torts professor promoted so much Marxist politics that we had to form study groups outside class and buy external commercial course outlines to learn the subject on our own. Therefore, it is imperative that the federal and state governments legislatively tie funding to requirements that the universities prove diversity of faculty viewpoints. No need for precisely 50–50. Even 40 percent conservative and 60 percent progressive-woke can do. Let us be clear: The proposal is not that any individual professor modify or compromise his or her beliefs in or out of the classroom. Rather, an onus must lie on a university and its trustees to demonstrate with ample documentation that they have engaged in meaningful outreach to attract a more balanced faculty. That is what was demanded by “affirmative action” and identity DEI, and that is what is needed for viewpoint DEI. What gives government the right to get involved? Precisely the same as what allowed government for half a century to enforce identity DEI outreach. Governments spend billions in the aggregate to fund the best education money can buy (itself a somewhat specious premise). Therefore, the best — and perhaps only — argument for identity DEI is that all students are enriched when they come into contact with classmates from other backgrounds they never encountered. The same precise argument pertains to promoting viewpoint DEI: A student’s mind will mature in the best way if presented with a variety of viewpoints, exposed to different perspectives on the same issues, and, thus, challenged to weigh all competing theses and antitheses to reach an intelligent synthesis, whatever it be. If we terminate identity DEI, implement viewpoint DEI, and actualize the other proposals I have offered in this series — all as one comprehensive package — there would be an overnight revolution on America’s campuses, and the moral and academic rot would be replaced by an academic renaissance. Biden Presidency Becomes Biden Dictatorship

On the latest Joe Biden comments, it’s the usual game of left-wing projection. From NBC: In forceful condemnation of Trump, Biden warns that ‘MAGA’ backers pose grave threat to democracy From CNN: Biden previews 2024 message by warning that Trump’s movement is a threat to American democracy From the Financial Times: Joe Biden says Donald Trump threatens ‘sacred cause’ of US democracy From the BBC: Joe Biden says Trump ideology threatens US democracy And on — and on and on — go the accusations from President Joe Biden that his opponent, if elected, would be a serious threat to democracy. (READ MORE from Jeffrey Lord: Michael Cohen Blows Up the Trump Prosecution) And then. Here are a few different headlines. Very different. From CNN: June 13, 2023 Trump pleads not guilty in historic federal indictment The CNN story reported: Trump, who is the first former US president to face federal charges, was arrested and booked alongside aide and co-defendant, Walt Nauta, who did not enter a plea deal. From the New York Times: Trump Indicted: Trump Is Charged in Classified Documents Inquiry The seven counts against the former president include conspiracy to obstruct, willful retention of documents and false statements, according to people familiar with the indictment. He said he would surrender to the authorities on Tuesday. Again, there were many more stories reporting that the Biden Justice Department had arrested and charged Biden’s Republican opponent. Now comes this news. From Newsweek: FBI Was Prepared to Use ‘Deadly Force’ at Mar-a-Lago Raid From the Tampa Free Press: Report: FBI Agents At Mar-a-Lago Raid In Florida Were Authorized To Use Deadly Force Against Trump  The Free Press story reported: FBI agents who raided former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in August 2022 were authorized to use deadly force, if necessary, according to a new report Tuesday. Conservative journalist Julie Kelly revealed the orders from the raid, authorized by Attorney General Merrick Garland, in a series of posts on X…. “Oh my God. Armed FBI agents were preparing to confront Trump and even engage Secret Service [agents] if necessary,” Kelly posted. “They were going to go door to door to terrorize MAL guests and even pick the locks. Gestapo.” All of which is to say that Joe Biden used the presidency to have his Republican opponent arrested and sent in armed FBI agents, clearly willing to use violence if necessary, to hunt Trump down. Or, in other words, the Biden presidency has become the Biden dictatorship. This is decidedly not a joke. For the first time in American history, the White House is occupied by a president who is using the powers of his office as would a third-world banana Republic dictator. And the sooner he is removed from the Oval Office — in a democratic election — the safer American democracy will be. Even Portland Is Fed Up with Progressive Policies

Multnomah County, Oregon, District Attorney Mike Schmidt received landslide support from voters in 2020 for his “reform-minded” promises to reduce incarceration and address racial disparities in policing and law enforcement. After Schmidt earned 77 percent of the vote in one of the nation’s most progressive counties (Portland is located in Multnomah County), the prosecutor’s term should have been a breeze. RELATED: The Beginning of the End for the Soros Revolution? Six days after the local election, George Floyd’s death sparked riots in cities across the country. Portland’s city council quickly voted to cut 84 police officers and defund the police to the tune of $15 million. By the time Schmidt took office in August 2020, riots had plagued Portland for months — and they would continue into the winter. Just like the city council, Schmidt decided to appease the Black Lives Matter rioters. After all, their progressive vision wasn’t far removed from his campaign promises. Schmidt promised not to prosecute rioters for crimes like disorderly conduct or interference with a police officer. In the following years, the number of shootings and homicides exploded, vehicle theft increased, and violent crime stabilized at 17 percent higher than 2019 levels. The lack of misdemeanor prosecution, combined with Oregon’s newly relaxed drug laws, contributed to the proliferation of open-air drug markets and homeless encampments. In short, Portland became unlivable.  This week, Portland voters ousted Schmidt in a district attorney election that has been characterized as a referendum on the city’s progressive quality-of-life policies. Nathan Vasquez, a prosecutor who has served Multnomah County for almost 25 years, challenged his boss for the position. Vasquez beat Schmidt by 8 points.  Where Schmidt’s term accelerated progressive criminal justice reforms, Vasquez campaigned on a centrist law and order platform. “We can be compassionate about people’s life circumstances, recognizing the complex issues that drive some individuals into the criminal justice system,” Vasquez’s campaign website states. “At the same time, we can and must hold people accountable for their actions when they harm our communities.” Clearly, his platform resonated with Multnomah County voters. Though Portland has long been a melting pot of left-wing lifestyles, some residents think the city’s radicalism has gone too far. Vasquez told the Free Press that some of his supporters had previously participated in the anti-police riots of 2020. “A lot of people still want social justice,” Vasquez said, “But what they also want is a safe community.”  Vasquez’s election comes several months after the Oregon state Legislature repealed core elements of Measure 110, a novel piece of legislation that decriminalized the possession and use of hard drugs. Though Measure 110 had been passed in November 2020 with 59 percent support from voters, polling three years later showed that “64 percent of voters wanted some or all of it repealed.” Starting Sept. 1, core elements of Measure 110 will be nullified: Hard drug possession will be illegal, and courts will once again mandate treatment for offenders.  During the candidates’ campaigns, the Willamette Weekly asked Vasquez and Schmidt where they stood on Measure 110 and its repeal: “Do you support rolling back decriminalization and, if so, how stiff should the criminal charge be?” Though Schmidt’s spokesman called for a ban on the public use of hard drugs, he would not directly answer whether he supported recriminalizing drug possession. Vasquez had no problem facing the question head-on. He criticized Measure 110 for permitting increased drug abuse and proposed a “six-point strategy” to realign drug policy with public safety. Vasquez voiced support for a return to pre–Measure 110 classifications for hard drugs as Class A misdemeanors and emphasized the need for addiction treatment.  Multnomah County voters would have laughed at Vasquez’s position in 2020, but after four years of blight — including rampant drug abuse, homelessness, opioid overdoses, and open-air drug dealing — Portland voters are fed up. Polling found that 78 percent of Portland voters believe homelessness is a “very serious problem” in the city, and more than 60 percent of voters supported fines or arrests for vagrancy.    “A line I hear in Portland on an everyday basis is that people tell me, ‘I’m very progressive, or I’m very liberal, but things have gone too far,’” Vasquez commented to the Free Press. Politico’s analysis of the electoral atmosphere is astute:  [Democrats have] mostly found success by elevating abortion and MAGA … but their vulnerabilities on quality-of-life issues remain and could prove particularly acute with the broader presidential electorate this fall.  In a one-party district like Multnomah County, tensions within the Democrats are evident. Vasquez beat Schmidt, but by a far smaller margin than the 53-point victory that put Schmidt in office in the first place. And if Vasquez cracks down on crime too fervently, he risks ostracizing some of the very voters who pushed for criminal justice reforms in 2020. Quality-of-life issues are easiest to campaign on when things are bad, and Democrats are unlikely to walk back their fervent espousal of radical reforms by progressive prosecutors like Schmidt. But, at least for now, even Portland residents are fed up with their party’s left-most wing.  Mary Frances Myler is a contributing editor at The American Spectator. Democrats Are Stuck With Joe Biden as Their Presidential Nominee

President Joe Biden is currently losing the 2024 presidential race to former President Donald Trump. If the election were held tomorrow, Trump would win — likely convincingly. The fact that this is increasingly obvious, and that Biden finds himself fighting an uphill battle to prolong his already ancient political career, has precipitated some epic handwringing on the MSNBC airwaves and a veritable five-alarm fire at the Democratic National Committee. The big polling news last week was that the New York Times/Siena College, one of the country’s most accurate pollsters, has Trump up in five of the six most important swing states — including an astonishing 13-point cushion in light-blue Nevada, and a nine-point lead in purple Georgia. This week, the big polling update came courtesy of the Cook Political Report, another highly regarded polling outfit. The Cook Political Report poll also has Trump leading or tied in each of the seven states polled — in both a mano-a-mano and a three-way race that takes into account independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (READ MORE: Ohio Legislature Refuses to Bail Out Biden’s Incompetence. Good for It.) The fact that the Cook Political Report corroborated the eye-opening Times/Siena findings from the week prior led polling savant Nate Silver to post this warning on Thursday: “If Biden is still struggling in August[,] he needs to consider stepping aside. It’s not a great situation for D[emocrat]s either way, but you have to do due diligence on the question. It’s an important election, obviously. It shouldn’t be taboo to talk about.” Indeed, polling cross-tabs routinely show that a plurality or majority of Democrats would prefer Biden do just that: Step aside and exit the national stage. The party’s basic conundrum is this: Democrats purport to view Trump as an existential threat to “our democracy,” but they are being led to the political slaughter by their senile octogenarian-in-chief. So perhaps Democrats are planning to depose Biden and pull the old switcheroo at their summertime nominating convention in Chicago — a spectacle already expected to be mass-protested by pro-Hamas radicals who abhor the man they call “Genocide Joe”? It’s not going to happen. Democrats, whether they like it or not, are stuck with the doddering Delawarean dolt as their 2024 presidential nominee. Biden first arrived in Washington, D.C., as a U.S. senator in Jan. 1973. He first ran for president in 1988 — the year before your humble columnist was born. Good luck trying to convince him to voluntarily bow out, after he finally ran a successful presidential race on his third try. Furthermore, the fact that Biden is so decrepit and diminished makes it less likely he will receive earnest advice to drop out from those around him — in his weakened state, he is merely a puppet to be taken advantage of by close staffers and confidants. And there is no more cynical or self-serving confidant than his wife “Dr.” Jill Biden, a 21st-century Lady Macbeth if there ever were one. (READ MORE: Biden’s NAACP Speech Signals an Overlooked Iceberg Ahead) But there is an even clearer, more obvious reason the Democrats have no choice but to roll the dice with Biden this fall. Democrats, humorously, are now trapped by a self-defeating intersectional quagmire of their very own making. The single most frequently floated suggestion for the Democrat who can swoop into the August convention in Chicago and save the day for the donkeys is California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Other possibilities are thought to include Vice President Kamala Harris, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker. There is a glaring structural problem here. If Democrats leapfrog the Black female Harris to choose any of these white men — especially the Hollywood villain-resembling Newsom — they will have committed an egregious sin, according to the tenets of their very own woke catechism and “diversity, equity, and inclusion” ideology. How can the Democratic Party, which two years ago explicitly chose Ketanji Brown Jackson to replace the retiring Stephen Breyer on the U.S. Supreme Court on the grounds that she is a Black woman, now defenestrate the first Black woman to ever serve as president or vice president? And to do so for a dreaded white man? Scandalous! (READ MORE: Kamala Quiet on Anti-Israel Protests) Democrats simply can’t do it. And they doubly can’t do it at a time when their presidential ticket is struggling so mightily to retain Black support — especially younger Black males, who show signs of trending toward Republicans at historic margins. There is therefore no world in which Biden is discarded for anyone other than Harris herself. But Harris may well be the only Democrat in Washington, D.C., less popular than Uncle Joe himself. The dimwitted cackler-in-chief is about as popular these days as venereal disease. Democrats therefore have no choice but to take a deep breath, pray to the deity they probably don’t believe in, and roll the dice with their impotent current ticket. And Republicans couldn’t possibly be happier about it. Ladies and Democrats, the Bronx Is Turning

“Who would think?” Donald Trump asked. “Who would think?” A tree grows in Brooklyn, a Republican speaks in the Bronx — six of one, half a dozen of the other. Donald Trump reminded fellow New Yorkers Thursday of his success as a builder in an address that promised to “make New York City great again.” Amid a sea of red hats and over the din of “USA!” chants, the former president pointed to garbage and needles in the streets, train stops that look like they last received a cleaning in 1932, crime, illegal immigrants draining resources, failing schools, and fleeing businesses as New York City problems he promises to fix. Stump speech in much of its content, surreal speech in its setting, it struck as smart and effective. He praised New York City and emphasized that Democratic politicians trashed it. He highlighted his role in building the city, pointing to the Ferry’s Point golf club in the Bronx, the Wollman Rink in Central Park, and renovations at Grand Central Terminal, as a means of buttressing his credentials to rebuild it. He shared the stage with former state senator and city councilor Ruben Diaz, Sr., who called himself “this Democrat, this black Puerto Rican with a kinky-hair and a broken English” before endorsing Trump for president. Trump gave denizens of New York reasons to vote for him. These included his pledge to work with Democrats. “As soon as I get back into the Oval Office, I am going to pick up the phone and I’m going to call your mayor and your governor, and I’m going to say, ‘This is President Trump and I want to come back and help!’” he announced. “Look, you have a Democrat mayor and a Democrat governor, and we are going to work with them.” This remains beyond the ability of their fellow Democrat in the White House, a man whose name came up surprisingly rarely, at least for a Trump speech, on Thursday. “Biden can’t do it,” he told the crowd. “He doesn’t know he’s alive.” The vintage Trump on immigration, crime, schools, and the corruption of his pursuers yielded to a recitation of the song “The Snake” to demonstrate the folly of allowing those let out of prisons and mental institutions into the country, calling American wars in the Middle East “so sick and so stupid,” and recounting his friendship with William Levitt as he rose and the older man fell. With Hispanics amounting to nearly two-thirds of the South Bronx’s population and blacks constituting almost a third, the foray might seem a political stunt. Polling indicates that the former president makes major inroads, vis-à-vis previous runs, in these traditional Democratic constituencies. In April, Pew found a 77-18 percent African American imbalance between Biden and Trump, which, decontextualized, sounds like great news for Biden until confronted with the 92-8 disparity between the two men in 2020. The New York Times/Siena College survey taken earlier this spring indicated Trump’s more than quintupling his support among blacks since the last presidential election (four percent to 23 percent). The most recent Fox News poll shows Biden ahead 57 percent to 21 percent among blacks and squeaking by 42 percent to 37 percent among Hispanics. Thursday seemed less about winning the Bronx, or the blacks, than about peeling away support from Biden from the constituencies Democrats have counted on, and perhaps taken for granted, for decades. Biden cannot win by bleeding black and Hispanic support. In other words, Democrats err in fearing the boogeyman of bearded, rural white guys wearing MAGA hats smashing windows at the Capitol. As the police informed the babysitter in that classic, creepy TV movie: “We’ve traced the call—it’s coming from inside the house.” The post Ladies and Democrats, the Bronx Is Turning appeared first on The American Spectator | USA News and Politics.

Wait a Minute. Are Conservatives Really Winning the Culture War?

We’re just days away from Pride Month — that holy season of the Left dedicated to the celebration of its most devastating sins. (If you aren’t already preparing to boycott major corporations and every coffee shop, you probably should be.) Yet, for some reason, conservatives, often ignoramuses when it comes to strategy, have started to peel the bells of cultural victory this week. The question always worth asking is: Should we be? Earlier this week, Brett Cooper, host of the Daily Wire’s Comments Section, published a heart-warming segment celebrating conservative cultural wins in the last few months. “After four years … it’s nice to see that there is a level of normalcy returning to our culture,” Cooper said. (READ MORE: The Beginning of the End for the Soros Revolution?) Cooper isn’t the only one to observe that conservatives might be making strides in the right direction. Don Surber wrote on the same topic in his Substack column this week, noting that not only has lawfare waged against former President Donald Trump backfired for Democrats (a point The American Spectator’s Melissa Mackenzie and Scott McKay made on a recent episode of The Spectacle podcast), but liberal attempts to cancel the Kansas City Chief’s Harrison Butker and the WNBA’s Caitlin Clark have flopped miserably. It turns out that football fans care more about Butker’s ability to kick a ball than his political and cultural takes. Basketball fans (particularly those who watch the WNBA) have no problem celebrating the accomplishments of a player who is “white, straight and from Iowa.” If you spend any time scrolling through YouTube Shorts or TikTok videos, you may have noticed a curious uptick in the number of women lamenting their nine-to-five office jobs and speculating that maybe, just maybe, being a stay-at-home wife and mother isn’t such a bad deal after all. After years of being told that men and women should be equal in the workplace no matter what, it seems that Gen Zers and millennials (for all their faults) are interested in questioning the narrative that all women find fulfillment in cubicles. But what most likely got conservatives ruminating about the hopeful direction the culture seems to be turning was the reaction of normal American students to the destructive protests that broke out on their college campuses last month and the subsequent college response. American frat boys had no patience with protesters who tried to replace the American flag with a Palestinian one on the University of North Carolina’s campus in Chapel Hill. Students across social media ranted about how their college graduations were being canceled — and they were especially livid, since these students had been denied a high school graduation during the COVID lockdowns. (RELATED: Zero Championships for Hamas) @jaydemorrissette Can you tell I’ve been crying class of 2020 in high school & class of 2024 in college… #graduationcancelled #universityofminnesota #uofminnesota #minnesota #minneapolis #universityofsoutherncalifornia #uscgraduation #collegegraduation #collegegraduate #umn #uofm #graduation #2020seniors #2024senior ♬ original sound – Moe Universities themselves seem to have finally come to the conclusion that DEI programs are more harmful than helpful, and many of them, including UNC, decided to nuke their woke programs (in UNC’s case, that funding ended up going to the campus police). All of this is good news. Incredibly good news. It’s certainly an indication that the culture is turning in the right direction. Americans are beginning to wake up and pay attention to the insidious direction in which progressives have been taking the country. They’re starting to fight back, and they might even be winning. That all being said (and celebrated), conservatives should maintain a healthy dose of cynicism. Just because we’ve won a few battles doesn’t mean that we’ve won the war. That is an important perspective to maintain as we head into Pride Month and the season of drag shows in libraries and on our city streets. It will also be an important perspective politically as the election season heats up. (READ MORE: Forget Cancel Culture. The Real Danger Is the Left’s Creation Culture.) The true test of these recent trends of victory in the culture war is in front of us, not behind us. This isn’t to rain on anyone’s parade — conservatives should be joyful, and that includes celebrating the small wins — but instead to say that we shouldn’t rest on our laurels.
