Newly released bodycam footage shows the moment law enforcement arrested a Minnesota state Democratic lawmaker.
Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell is accused of burglarizing her stepmother’s home to take property that belonged to her late father.
Mitchell faces charges of first-degree burglary and possession of burglary or theft tools from the April 2024 incident.
“Bodycam footage of Sen. Nicole Mitchell’s arrest was shown during her burglary trial today. Mitchell faces charges of first-degree burglary and possession of burglary tools for allegedly breaking into her stepmother’s Detroit Lakes home,” FOX 9 wrote.
“The prosecution claims Mitchell intended to steal, entering through a basement window with a crowbar, while the defense argues she was a concerned family member checking on her stepmother’s well-being,” it added.

Testimony began Tuesday in Mitchell’s trial.
CBS News shared details:
Nicole Mitchell’s stepmother, Carol Mitchell, testified late Tuesday morning, although she opted not to be recorded on camera during her testimony.
During the testimony, Carol Mitchell said she felt “extremely violated,” when her home was broken into.
“It was frightening,” she said. “I didn’t dare to stay there. I moved out.”
She added that she was surprised to learn that Nicole Mitchell had broken in, and she had not given her stepdaughter permission to enter the home. She said she moved back into her home after a security system was installed.
The defense then asked Carol Mitchell if her stepdaughter cared about her safety or well-being.
“I don’t believe so,” she told the court. “Nicole never let me get close to her.”
Carol Mitchell said she was given the estate after her husband died. According to her testimony, she had a son when she was 18 years old whom she gave up for adoption. Later in life, they reconnected, and her son would often come to visit her after her husband died. During the testimony, she said Nicole Mitchell had told her that she didn’t believe her son should receive all of the family money.
“Officer Doug Vickmark just testified that Carol Mitchell feared Sen. Nicole Mitchell (D) broke into her home to end her life. This trial just took a very dark turn. Woah,” Townhall columnist Dustin Grage commented.

“Carol Mitchell suspected that Sen. Nicole Mitchell was searching for her late father’s gun. Which was located in a dresser where Sen. Mitchell was next to when her stepmother awoke. OMG,” Grage added.

KARE 11 noted:
The day began with brief opening statements from both prosecutors and the defense, and then the state began building its case. Dispatcher Joseph Robbins was first to the stand, detailing the 911 call he received that morning from the defendant’s stepmother, Carol Mitchell.
Jurors heard a recording of that call, in which Mitchell’s stepmother told dispatch that someone had broken into her home and was in the basement. Robbins testified that Carol Mitchell told him the intruder was at the foot of her bed, and that she at first thought it was a man.
Detroit Lake police officer Joseph Sternhagen was the next witness. He described searching the home and seeing a woman dressed all in black with her hands up.
Sternhagen, who is now an investigator, told jurors that Mitchell was upset with her stepmother and the status of their relationship. She reportedly left her home in Woodbury at 1 a.m. that morning to drive to Detroit Lakes and retrieve her father’s ashes, one of his flannel shirts and another memento.
“Her father’s possessions had been weighing on her, and it was difficult to sleep,” Sternhagen told the courtroom.
The jury panel then saw Officer Sternhagen’s body cam video, which captured him searching the basement and coming upon Mitchell dressed from head to toe in black and wearing a black hat. “Get on the ground! Hands behind your back,” the officer ordered, and Mitchell quickly complied. She then spoke to her stepmother, who was behind the officer.
