Watch: Biden Returns to Public Spotlight by Repeatedly Shouting During Veterans Memorial Speech

Former President Joe Biden suffered obvious cognitive decline long before he left office. Everyone could see it, and every honest person acknowledged it. Meanwhile, last week, the public learned of Biden's cancer diagnosis. In other words, under normal circumstances, basic human compassion would stay our impulse to mock the octogenarian...

Stephen Miller Doesn't Hold Back When CNN Anchor Uses Term 'Undocumented Migrant'

If White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt is the Trump administration's face to the American public, Stephen Miller is its teeth. The White House deputy chief of staff is a man with a well-established reputation for refusing to suffer fools gladly -- particularly fools on the CNN payroll. And he...

Editor’s Pick: 6 Books on Heaven

Editor’s Pick: 6 Books on Heaven

Evangelicals are sometimes leery of talking about heaven. There are several reasons for this. First, especially in Reformed circles, we often emphasize the continuity of creation between the present world and the new heavens and new earth. As a result, we sometimes neglect to discuss the points of difference that make our future dwelling in the presence of God something that should leave us with a deep longing. Second, as a culture, we’re still recovering from the effects of a cottage industry of “near-death experience” accounts that were extremely popular but usually entirely inconsistent with the biblical data on the topic. It feels safer to be silent than to risk theological error. Third, the accusation that Christians are “so heavenly minded they’re no earthly good” echoes through society. Sometimes we fail to talk about the afterlife for fear of being accused of being escapists. Yet none of these excuses is sound. There will be a great deal of continuity between this world and the next; yet the renovated wonder of the new heavens and new earth can’t be ignored. Additionally, the proper response to errant thinking about heaven isn’t silence; it’s sound doctrine. Moreover, escapism isn’t a necessary corollary of a heavenward focus. As C. S. Lewis memorably argued in Mere Christianity, “It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at Heaven and you will get earth ‘thrown in’: aim at earth and you will get neither.” The six books on this list encourage a heavenward focus and fuel a deeper longing for the world to come. 1. Matthew McCullough, Remember Heaven: Meditations on the World to Come for Life in the Meantime (Crossway, 2025) (TGC Store | Amazon) A seasoned saint recently told me that he knew he should look forward to heaven but it sounded boring to him. The problem isn’t heaven. It’s that the individual had an anemic view of eternity. McCullough’s book Remember Heaven addresses common misconceptions about heaven as he explores the hope that should leave us longing for the new heavens and new earth. He argues that instead of suppressing our longing for heaven through distraction, we should dig deeper into a true vision of heaven so we long for it even more. 2. Cameron Cole, Heavenward: How Eternity Can Change Your Life on Earth (Crossway, 2024) (TGC Store | Amazon) Cole’s life changed when his son unexpectedly died. Though Cole always had a theological understanding of heaven, his life had been more focused on this present world than the one to come. Tragedy and sorrow changed that. He argues that having his new heavenward perspective “provided richer fellowship with Jesus.” It gave him more hope and a better focus on ministry, prayer, and evangelism. This book exhorts readers to share in a greater heavenward vision. 3. Andrew M. Davis, The Glory Now Revealed: What We’ll Discover About God in Heaven (Baker, 2021) (TGC Store | Amazon) Will we remember what happened in this life when we’re glorified and standing in God’s presence? This is a central question in Davis’s The Glory Now Revealed. He explains there’s more continuity than discontinuity between this world and the next. Therefore, we should live this earthly life in view of the eternal life to come. Though we see in a mirror dimly now, we’ll understand so much better when we reach glory (1 Cor 13:12). 4. Richard Baxter, The Saints’ Everlasting Rest, updated and abridged by Tim Cooper (Crossway, 2022) (Amazon) Baxter is one of the most prolific Puritan writers, but (like most Puritans) he’s not always easy to read. Cooper served the church by updating and abridging Baxter’s classic 1650 work. This edition balances rigorous, systematic reflection on eternity with readability. The result is a delightful, practical exposition on how to develop a heavenly mindset in this life and why that matters. Additionally, Cooper includes end-of-chapter questions and a detailed outline, which can help those leading group discussions. 5. Amy Baik Lee, This Homeward Ache: How Our Yearning for the Life to Come Spurs on Our Life Today (B&H, 2023) (TGC Store | Amazon) Lee borrows from the idea of longing (Sehnsucht) that Lewis describes in Surprised by Joy. With beautiful prose and well-told stories, Lee shows readers how that deep longing for something beyond this world is good and how it should spur us on toward holiness in this life. This book is more devotional than theological, but for those wearied by the burdens of the modern world, it’s refreshing. There’s a reason it received an award of distinction in the 2023 TGC Book Awards. 6. Randy Alcorn, Heaven: A Comprehensive Guide to Everything the Bible Says About Our Eternal Home (Tyndale Momentum, 2004) (TGC Store | Amazon) This book was originally published during the height of the heavenly tourism fad. A lot of people were talking about heaven, but what they were talking about had little to do with Scripture. Alcorn’s book is systematic and reasonably comprehensive as he works through biblical texts on eternity. His stated goal is to be biblical. At the same time, there are places where Alcorn speculates using a sanctified imagination. This is a helpful, accessible book that should be read with an open Bible.

Brick by Brick: The Inspiring Story of Ole Kirk Christiansen

Brick by Brick: The Inspiring Story of Ole Kirk Christiansen

The future founder of LEGO wasn’t yet 6 years old when he created his first toy. The hands that would one day mold plastic into the world’s most popular plaything started with much simpler materials: a stone and some string. Where others might see an ordinary rock, young Ole Kirk Christiansen saw potential. Few people know Christiansen’s story, but once you do, you’ll never look at a pile of shiny LEGO bricks—or your own work—the same way again. Here are three ways Christiansen’s life serves as a model for working believers today. 1. Persevere Through Trials Christiansen suffered more than most of us ever will. He watched his life’s work literally go up in flames three times. In the span of two years, his carpentry workshop burned to the ground twice (a fire would also consume his fledgling LEGO factory 16 years later). He spent years teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. And in 1932, in the span of just a few days, he suffered the unimaginable loss of his unborn child and his wife. But Christiansen consistently joined God’s servant Job in saying, “The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD” (Job 1:21, KJV). He clung tightly to the promise of Romans 8:28 that “in all things”—even the most terrible ones—“God works for the good of those who love him” (NIV). By God’s grace, Christiansen was able to see some of that “good” on this side of eternity. He saw how God used economic hardships to pivot him away from a traditional carpentry business to making toys. He saw how God provided a second wife who would fund the founding of LEGO. But there’s no doubt that Christiansen went to the grave without comprehending how God would use other tragedies for good. After all, what human can understand the good of losing a child? And yet Christiansen had faith that somehow God was doing good to him even when it didn’t feel good to him. Christiansen glorified God by persevering through unimaginable trials in his faith. You and I can do the same today. 2. Embrace Play and ‘Useless’ Work Christiansen had faith that somehow God was doing good to him even when it didn’t feel good to him. Throughout Scripture, we see God doing work that most people in our utilitarian-obsessed culture would describe as pointless and impractical. Genesis 2:9 says that God made trees that were useful for food and beautiful. In Job 38:25–26 (NIV), God said that he sends “torrents of rain . . . to water a land where no one lives.” And in Revelation, we’re told that God has covered his eternal city, the new Jerusalem, with 5,600 miles of emeralds, sapphires, and “every kind of jewel” (Rev. 21:15–21). God doesn’t always act with utility obviously in view. And so we as his image-bearers can do something for the pure joy and play of it. I don’t think anyone understood this better than Christiansen. When he decided to pivot from his carpentry business to building a toy factory, almost everyone told Christiansen he was crazy. The world was in crisis—in the pit of the Great Depression. People needed food and shelter, Christiansen’s friends told him, not yo-yos and toy cars. But Christiansen disagreed. In his own playful life and the life of the business he created to help others “play well,” he demonstrated a deep understanding that we can glorify God by embracing fun, beauty, play, and “useless” work. You don’t have to be alleviating poverty, prosecuting human traffickers, or curing diseases to honor God through your vocation (as good and important as that work is). You can please him by designing beautiful charcuterie boards, planning joyous events, and building the next great toy company. So if you do work that the world tends to view as trivial and useless, lean into it today with all your heart, knowing that the Lord delights in every detail of the lives of the godly (see Ps. 37:23). 3. Commit to the Ministry of Excellence From requiring that each of LEGO’s early wooden ducks received three coats of paint to fighting for the perfect interlocking LEGO brick, Christiansen consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to excellence in his craft. But don’t miss the why behind that commitment. Christiansen was never recorded as saying anything like “Only the best is good enough because that’s how we maximize profits.” Only the best was good enough because Christiansen understood that mere Christians glorify God through the ministry of excellence. You don’t have to be alleviating poverty, prosecuting human traffickers, or curing diseases to honor God through your vocation. In 1 Corinthians 10:31, the apostle Paul commands, “Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” This means we should act in ways that reflect God’s character to others. And what’s one of God’s primary characteristics as a worker? Excellence. Commenting on the carpenter whom Christiansen called Savior, the novelist Dorothy L. Sayers said, “No crooked table legs or ill-fitting drawers ever, I dare swear, came out of the carpenter’s shop at Nazareth . . . work must be good work before it can call itself God’s work. . . . The only Christian work is good work well done.” Ole Kirk Christiansen had done what every mere Christian longs to do. In the face of great adversity, he worked with excellence, loved God, and loved people. Nearly a hundred years later, his life still beckons all who know his incredible story to do the same.
