Brown’s Bill on ‘Pregnant Persons’ Comes Back To Haunt Him

Earlier this week, former Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, formally announced that he is seeking a comeback bid after losing last year to now Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno, though he’ll have his record to contend with. Brown is running against Republican Sen. Jon Husted, who was appointed to fill now Vice President JD Vance’s seat, triggering a special election for next year. POLITICO’s Adam Wren on Friday morning shared a Third Way memo of words that Democrats are being urged not to use, many of them woke terms often embraced by the left. Among them is “birthing person,” a term employed by the Biden administration instead of “woman.” Such a memo follows one released in March, also by Third Way, which cautioned Democrats to avoid “ideological purity tests.” The National Republican Senatorial Committee quickly caught on to call to mind how Brown, in sponsoring a bill on pregnancy, changed language to no longer say “women,” but rather the similarly woke term of “pregnant person.” Who’s gonna tell @SherrodBrown he can’t say “pregnant persons” anymore? https://t.co/BiSWarVV6e pic.twitter.com/TZJYHM2r3l— Senate Republicans (@NRSC) August 22, 2025 The National Republican Senatorial Committee added further comment for The Daily Signal. “To use the term ‘pregnant persons’ over women is completely insane. It shows how Sherrod Brown is a puppet for the woke left that he would rather fight for the left’s radical ideology than for the people of Ohio,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Nick Puglia. The post shared to X references a Fox News article highlighting how then Sen. Brown “quietly” scrubbed gendered language when reintroducing the Healthy Maternity and Obstetric Medicine Act. He first introduced such a bill in 2015, when “women” was mentioned 22 times, “maternity” 19 times, and “woman” twice. According to Fox News, though, the 2023 version of the bill does not reference “women” or “woman” and contains fewer references to “maternity.” “The later iterations of the bill solely rely on the descriptors ‘pregnant person’ and ‘pregnant individual’ rather than ‘woman,'” Fox News also mentioned. The Daily Signal reached out to the Brown and Husted campaigns for a response on the former senator being targeted in such a way as he seeks a comeback bid. This is not the first time that the National Republican Senatorial Committee has capitalized on Brown’s record from when he was in the Senate. The NRSC similarly targeted Brown for his views on transgender politics, including in an ad released on Monday when the former senator officially announced. Sellout Sherrod Brown is radical & WRONG for Ohio.Rather than standing up for Ohio, he spent his time in office fighting for the left.He backed higher taxes, sold out union workers, supported open borders, & even pushed sex-change surgeries for kids.Ohio deserves better. pic.twitter.com/1JzWmIXWyH— Senate Republicans (@NRSC) August 18, 2025 Last week, amid increased chatter that Brown was indeed running again, Republican operative Jai Chabria spoke to The Daily Signal about how “there were tens of millions of dollars spent to define [Brown] as too liberal,” which he says “will continue to stick” and is “a brand [Brown’s] got to spend just to overcome in a state that’s moved red.” Brown’s loss, and what it meant for now Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s, D-N.Y., loss of status as the minority leader, was seen as a major loser in the 2024 elections. Moreno’s victory was meanwhile heralded by The Daily Signal as a major win, while biology had a mixed record when it comes to the wokeness above and gender ideology. There was the election of now Rep. Sarah McBride, D-Del., a male who identifies as female, but also the loss of now former Democratic Rep. Colin Allred to Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in that U.S. Senate race. Allred, as did Brown, tried to run away from his record supporting boys and men participating in girls’ and women’s sports. Both were called out for it during the 2024 campaign. Also going against Brown is the release of an Emerson College poll from Friday morning. Husted leads Brown by 50-44%, with 7% undecided. This is despite Brown having higher name recognition/favorability. Prognosticators favor Husted as well, with Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball and Cook Political Report regarding the Brown-Husted race as “Lean Republican.” The post Brown’s Bill on ‘Pregnant Persons’ Comes Back To Haunt Him appeared first on The Daily Signal.

UK Speech Police: Lucy Connolly Speaks Out After Jail For Social Media Post

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Lucy Connolly is not, by her own admission, a politician, a pundit, or a revolutionary. She is, as she puts it, a “nobody.” A mother of two from Northampton, England, married to an engineer and local politician; and, until last year, was more concerned with school runs and snack schedules than the state of Britain’s freedom of expression. Then came a social media post, written in a moment of raw emotion after a horrific mass killing, and the next thing she knew, Connolly was in prison serving a sentence for inciting racial hatred. The facts of the case are already well documented. In the immediate aftermath of the Southport murders, where three girls were killed at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event, Connolly posted on X, calling for mass deportations. Her comments were inflammatory, emotional, and, within hours, deleted. Days later, the police came knocking. Connolly was arrested, charged, and eventually sentenced to 31 months behind bars. She served just over a year. Lucy Connolly’s imprisonment has sparked a renewed conversation about the fragile state of free speech in the United Kingdom. Her case became a stark reminder of how little legal protection exists for freedom of expression in Britain, particularly when compared to countries like the United States. In the UK, there is no equivalent to the First Amendment. Speech can and regularly does result in criminal charges if it is deemed “grossly offensive” or judged to incite hatred, a standard so vague and subjective that it often hinges on political context, public backlash, or media scrutiny. Connolly’s conviction under hate speech laws for a deleted tweet that expressed rage following a horrific child murder is a chilling example of where those limits now fall. Connolly’s persecution received international attention. Across the Atlantic, the legal outcome would almost certainly have been different. In the United States, even the most inflammatory speech is generally protected unless it directly incites imminent lawless action. That line, clearly defined by decades of Supreme Court rulings, allows for harsh, even outrageous expression without fear of state punishment. The American model treats speech as a shield against government overreach; the UK, increasingly, uses speech as a gateway to prosecution. As Connolly herself pointed out in an interview with the Telegraph after finally being released from prison, “I will never understand how it got to this.” The truth is, it got to this because the UK’s legal framework allows it, and increasingly, encourages it. Connolly is calling it what she believes it was: a political prosecution. “Absolutely. Me and several other people,” she said to Allison Pearson, when asked if she saw herself as a political prisoner. And she does not mince words about who she believes orchestrated the example-making. The Prime Minister himself. Connolly says her tweet was not premeditated. It was not part of any campaign. It was a burst of rage, written in grief. She had lost her first child in 2012 due to failures of the UK’s National Health Service, a wound that, she says, was ripped wide open by the killings in Southport. “It came from a place of pain,” she told Pearson. “It was not my finest moment.” But she insists it was not an incitement to violence, nor was it rooted in hatred. “I definitely don’t advocate violence,” she said. The state argued otherwise. The CPS believed the post could incite racial hatred and saw fit to prosecute under one of the UK’s most serious public order laws. Connolly’s supporters, on the other hand, argue that while the post was unquestionably offensive and wrong, the response from the state was wildly disproportionate. The political undercurrent in Connolly’s prosecution is impossible to ignore, especially given the timing. Just days before her arrest, Prime Minister Keir Starmer gave a televised speech in the wake of riots across the country following the Southport killings. He condemned what he described as “far-right thuggery” and warned that those stoking unrest online would be dealt with. Connolly believes those comments were not rhetorical. They were operational. “A hundred per cent,” she said, when asked if she believed Starmer’s remarks influenced her prosecution. “He needs to practice what he preaches. He’s a human rights lawyer, so maybe he needs to look at what people’s human rights are; what freedom of speech means.” Speaking to Dan Wootton of the Outspoken podcast, Connolly went further. Connolly accused Starmer of turning her into a political example. Connolly said Starmer deliberately pushed for her to be remanded in custody as part of a wider crackdown. “Remand” means being held in prison before trial or sentencing rather than being released on bail. Bail is normally granted to defendants who are not considered a flight risk, particularly first-time offenders, but Connolly says she was denied that standard practice. “Instead of saying, you know, we know you’re upset, we know you’re angry, but this is not the way, and it won’t be tolerated,” Starmer instead said: “You’re all far right activists and racists and thugs. And you know, I don’t care if you’re upset that those three children have died, I don’t care if you’re scared for your own children, this is what we’re going to do. And you know, he said it himself, we will remand you, because that isn’t standard practice. To remand people like me, that isn’t a flight risk, that’s never offended before, and was very unlikely to offend again. It wouldn’t be standard practice,” she said. Starmer’s message was clear. Social media rage was going to be met with legal action. Connolly, many believe, simply became the most convenient test case. On the wider question of civil liberties under the Starmer government, Connolly was blunt: “I don’t think so, no [the UK does not have free speech]. And that’s become increasingly apparent, isn’t it?…We need to remember that there are still other people in prison.” She described those detainees as “other political prisoners,” adding: “So I would like Keir Starmer and the CPS and any of these people that had a hand in this to tell me exactly what they are achieving by putting the likes of me in prison…What are they gaining apart from an absolute minimum of £55,000 a year bill to the taxpayer? What’s being gained?” Connolly maintains she was pressured into pleading guilty. The courts were backlogged. Her daughter was waiting at home. Her legal team advised her that a trial would drag out for months. “What is my quickest route home?” she asked. And with that, she signed the papers. She also claims the police misrepresented her during the investigation. A CPS statement initially alleged that she told officers she “disliked immigrants.” That was later walked back. Lucy Connolly did not wait long to make her intentions clear. Just one day after stepping out of HMP Peterborough, she announced she was weighing legal action against the very authorities who put her there. “That’s something that I will be looking into,” she told The Telegraph. “I don’t want to say too much because I need to seek legal advice on that, but I do think the police were dishonest in what they released and what they said about me, and I will be holding them to account for that.” Since her release, she has returned to being a mother, albeit one who now sees the state from a far less innocent perspective. She marked her return with a bracelet and necklace gifted by her daughter, a private moment after more than a year of very public punishment. “They hope they broke me while I was in there,” she said. “But I’m here to tell you that they didn’t.” If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Campaign Cover-Up: Networks Duck Racist Sign by Virginia Democrat Activist

On Thursday night, the Virginia gubernatorial race hit a potential turning point when, at a protest outside an Arlington County School Board meeting in which GOP candidate and Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears spoke against children being subjected to sharing changing rooms with transgender individuals, an eldery, white, progressive woman holding a racist sign that read: “Hey Winsome, if trans can’t share your bathroom, then blacks can’t share my water fountain.” Unsurprisingly, this received zero mention Friday on ABC, CBS, and NBC during their flagship morning network news shows. In addition, it never came up on CNN’s various AM programs as well as MSNBC’s Morning Joe. The silence was aided in part by only a paper statement denouncing the sign from the candidate this women ostensibly supports, Democrat Abigail Spanberger.     There were two short nods between the Fox News Channel’s flagship morning show Fox & Friends and its lead-in, Fox & Friends First. On the latter, co-host Todd Piro declared: “And an absolutely disgusting, racist message targeting Virginia Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears at a school board meeting now being met with backlash on both sides of the aisle.” As for the main show, Earle-Sears brought it up near the end of her interview with co-host Brian Kilmeade: [A]nd then last night you saw that they equated bathroom opportunities with me being black in America and here I am, second in command of the former capital of the Confederacy — me, the immigrant whom they say, as Democrats, they love more than anybody. Me, a black woman who they say they love as Democrats more than anybody. This is insane. Kilmeade replied it was “insane” and while Spanberger “did denounce the sign...I would love to see it more public” in “stand[ing] up and say[ing] that’s out of bounds.” “A very weak response from a very weak person who we know cannot lead Virginia as governor. She’s finally come out of hiding when she should have a long time ago came out and defended so many things that are so wrong and she’s been absent,” Earle-Sears replied. As our friend and former NewsBusters intern Greg Price quipped on X: “You just know she was blasting NPR when she made that sign thinking she cooked. Instead, the networks had other priorities, such as ABC’s Good Morning America touting video an alligator swimming with sharks in South Carolina, CBS Mornings showing viral video of an out-of-control front-end loader rolling through traffic in Massachusetts, and NBC’s Today doing a deep dive on anti-aging supplements.

Kimmel's Wife, Writer Molly McNearney Claims Late Night Needed To Vent 'Anger'

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live’s co-head writer, executive producer, and wife of the eponymous host Molly McNearney recently gave an interview with the entertainment news website Gold Derby that was published on Thursday, where she defiantly claimed the late night comedy show format isn’t going anywhere because people (i.e., liberals) still need them to help them make sense of the world. In an article written by Marcus James Dixon, McNearney and fellow writer Jesse Joyce were asked, “The elephant in the room is that The Late Show With Stephen Colbert was canceled just about a month ago. What was your reaction when that news came down?”  McNearney was distraught, “I was very upset. I actually happened to be at a rally in Jackson Hole with Jimmy and our kids, an anti-Trump rally where my kids got flipped-off I think three to four times. And then my phone was buzzing, and I looked down and saw that Colbert's show was canceled, and I was truly devastated by it. And so was Jimmy. We have a deep respect for Stephen Colbert and his entire crew and cast and staff, and I'm really disappointed. Not only is he not going to be on the air, and I think his show is fantastic, the actual whole Late Show is gone. I have real nostalgia, as we all do, for what David Letterman created there. I'm still honestly in a bit of disbelief that it's over.” She also claimed that, “There's never been a more relevant time for late night. I think it is incredibly important, the work that Stephen and his show does, and for that to be missing is going to be detrimental. A lot of people oddly get their news from late night, and right now it's vital that these shows provide a place or outlet of release, frustration, anger, and inspiration every night. What a wild time to be alive. And to have one less voice in that fight is sad. Although, I'm fairly confident Stephen will find a different platform. I can't imagine he's going to go away.” That’s only true if you believe your job as a comedian is to be a sort of therapist helping liberals struggle through a Trump presidency. It is not a recipe for clever wittiness. Kimmel has occasionally brought McNearney in front of the camera to help him make his anti-conservative points. Usually, she is making some bitter point about abortion. She is also the person who thinks that jokes about Hillary Clinton’s pantsuits are just too much, “I was like, ‘What the fuck are you doing? You’re minimizing this woman to her clothes?’ We’d never talk about a man’s outfit.” Meanwhile, back in present day, Dixon asked, “We touched on it earlier, but a lot of people are talking about the future of late-night television, and where things might go from here. Molly, what is your take on that hot topic?”  Kimmel has previously strongly suggested he would choose to retire next year, but McNearney opened the door the possibility he could stay: I think there's a place for late night forever, honestly. People need voices to make us laugh and connect and evaluate the news of the day. I don't think that's going anywhere. The formats and platforms might change a little, but we are here to stay, so we look forward to continuing the work. Also, Jimmy's not moving to Italy. That was taken out of context. We're definitely here to say that. That guy is way too f--king patriotic to ever leave this country. First of all, he has American flag crocs, and 4th of July is his favorite holiday. And also, the guy is a fighter. He would never leave this country. He cares way too deeply about it. Trust me, I've suggested it. He will go nowhere. There are plenty of people out there that can help voters evaluate the news of the day. Jimmy Kimmel isn’t one of them.

Feeding the Leviathan Will Starve Prosperity

Feeding the Leviathan Will Starve Prosperity

The economy can be both very complex and very simple. In simplified terms, consider two buckets. One is the public sector, and one is the private sector. As more money flows into the bucket of the public sector and fills it up, the private sector bucket does not fill up. However, the private sector utilizes money more efficiently and contributes to economic growth for its citizens. As the government leviathan grows, it harms the private sector and, with it, working Americans.  Consider Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Before the financial crisis of 2008, Fannie and Freddie backed 45% of all mortgages. During the crisis, the federal government took over Fannie and Freddie. Combined, they now back over 60% of all mortgages. Add in FHA and VA loans, and the American taxpayer now backs almost 85% of all mortgages in the United States. Should there be another housing crisis, the taxpayers will foot the bill.  It is not just taxpayer liability that matters. Fannie and Freddie now back so many mortgages in the country that lenders have ceased innovation on mortgages. Every mortgage conforms to Fannie and Freddie standards. In some countries, a homeowner who gets a low-interest mortgage on a home can transfer that mortgage to a new home, letting the homeowner keep the same low rate and incentivizing greater flow within the housing market. The CATO Institute and others have noted that Fannie and Freddie, being under government control, have not only stifled innovation in the mortgage industry but have also contributed to the housing crisis.  When the federal government took control of General Motors, GM no longer engaged in risk assessment based on shareholder value and economic value, but in political risk. Because former President Barack Obama was in charge, GM foolishly pushed ahead with now-canceled electric vehicle projects that cost the company more than it made in return. GM, with government control, was able to bypass the claims of bondholders in order to reward the United Auto Workers Union at the insistence of the Obama administration. Small investors who held GM bonds lost out because of the political connections of unions. One of them, Anthony Pitelli, told the press, “This is the kind of stuff you’d expect from a Banana Republic. Not from the United States.” He compared the heavy-handed Obama tactics controlling GM to Hugh Chavez and Venezuela.  Time and time again, when the government gets involved, the leviathan grows, and both the Middle Class and small businesses get the shaft. Innovation stalls, and economic growth slows. Go back to the buckets. As the government issues more debt, more people buy public debt instead of investing in the public sector. The government’s bucket fills up with money that does not go to shareholders, workers, investors, innovation, or growth.  The Trump administration is now bragging that over $150 billion has been generated from tariffs. Some of that comes from American businesses. But some of that comes from American consumers. More of it will come from consumers soon as companies raise prices. That is more money in the government bucket, not the private sector bucket.  There are ways to encourage domestic manufacturing without raising input costs on manufacturers whose raw material prices have increased due to tariffs. There are ways to encourage “Buy American” campaigns without raising prices on consumers.  Now, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is urging the government to become the largest shareholder of Intel. Some defend it by citing national security reasons, ignoring the government does not own shares in other defense contractors. Others defend it because Trump is in charge, so damn the principle. But like with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, General Motors, etc., all this will do is increase burdens on American taxpayers, decrease efficiency in the private sector, which will slow growth, and put a major American microchip company in the position of doing what the government wants, not what is best for the company.  Americans have had it so good for so long, and we have forgotten why. Most Americans will not remember why until the government takes back over large portions of the economy and our economic growth collapses. Then they will remember that feeding the leviathan starves American prosperity.

Four Myths About DC Crime Busted by Facts

In their efforts to smear President Donald Trump’s recent deployment of federal law enforcement to the Nation’s Capital, legacy media and liberal politicians have been promoting myths about the severity of crime in D.C. and the city’s need for help to keep its citizens safe. Four of these myths – and the facts refuting them – are presented below. Myth: Federal law enforcement is ignoring the high-crime areas of Washington, D.C. Fact:  48% of the non-immigration arrests between August 9-17 took place in high-crime Wards 7 and 8. Myth: Washington, D.C. doesn't have a serious crime problem. Fact: Washington, D.C.'s murder rate is the 4th Highest in the nation and six times higher than that of New York City. Myth: Federal involvement in D.C. policing isn't necessary and won't affect crime in the district. Fact: Violent crime in the Nation’s Capital dropped 22% in the first week of federal police assistance. Myth:  Restaurant business in Washington, D.C., fell dramatically as a result of the deployment of federal law enforcement. Fact:  The same week in 2024 was "Restaurant Week" in Washington, D.C., distorting the comparison to this year.
