Libya’s Ancient Coast: The Lost Greek and Roman Treasures of Cyrenaica

Join Dan Snow for a special expeditionary documentary, Ancient Adventures: Libya, as History Hit ventures far off the beaten track of history.  After years of civil war and instability, History Hit has gained unique access as the first documentary team in 15 years to film in the rarely seen extraordinary ancient sites within Cyrenaica, centred around one of the greatest cities of the ancient world, Cyrene – a vibrant and important part of the Greek and Roman world.  This is a fascinating journey into a spectacular region where documentaries rarely go. From the majestic monumental Greek cities to active archaeology being revealed right before our eyes on the coast, this film celebrates the beauty, significance, and untold history of one of the ancient Mediterranean’s most powerful regions. Prepare for a film like no other, promising unprecedented access and a view of ancient history you’ve never seen. Sign up to watch The coastal city emerging from the waves Most modern understanding of Libya is framed by the era of Colonel Gaddafi and the subsequent civil war. However, Dan’s journey travels back 2,000 years and beyond to Cyrenaica, a fertile strip of land in northeastern Libya that was once the breadbasket and powerhouse of the ancient Mediterranean. As Dan explains, “Very few news crews, let alone history documentary-makers get to come here.”  Dan’s journey begins at the bay of Al Haniyah on the Mediterranean coast, where a fascinating archaeology project is rediscovering a long-lost coastal city, revealing its secrets thanks to natural coastal erosion. Working with teams from the University of Ulster and the University of Benghazi, Dan witnesses fascinating, active archaeology in progress that is disclosing the people who lived here two millennia ago.  Dan Snow sees how objects embedded in the cliffs are being exposed due to coastal erosion.Image Credit: History Hit “Ancient objects are literally falling out of the cliffs,” Dan notes, as the intense winter storms of North Africa claw away at the cliff face, exposing layers of history spanning over 1,000 years. The erosion is a race against time, but offers a unique, exposed cross-section of an ancient port. Dan and the lead archaeologist, Dr. Julia Nikolaus, even discover human bones that have fallen out of a burial, a visceral reminder that the waves of the Mediterranean are exposing all aspects of daily life and death at Al Haniyah. Along with hundreds of pottery shards, monumental buildings – including the remains of a temple and a Roman villa – are emerging, along with remaining patches of mosaic floors. This seemingly obscure town, which left little impression in the history books, is transforming our understanding of trade, proving it was a crucial hub for exporting goods like wine and Cyrenaican oil – once described as the oil of the ancient world. Dan Snow with lead archaeologist Dr Julia Nikolaus – they are pointing at a blocked-up doorway or window emerging from the cliffsImage Credit: History Hit Dan even joins a team conducting an underwater survey that is uncovering columns and signs of an ancient harbour beneath the waves, proving that a “new chapter in the story of Cyrenaica is being recorded right here.” We can imagine merchant ships anchored offshore; crews calling out as heavy amphorae were loaded; traders bargaining in the shade of warehouses; families strolling along the harbour-front. For centuries, this place supported busy routines of work, travel, and exchange. The wonder of Cyrene: A claim to power Heading inland, Dan travels up into the fertile mountains, site of the magnificent city of Cyrene, which was a wonder of the ancient Graeco-Roman world and a profound statement of Greek identity. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Dan’s excitement of exploring here is palpable. “I’ve dreamed of coming here all my life” says Dan. “We’ve been told that we’re (History Hit) are the first television crew to come and film here since the fall of Gaddafi. And as a result we have the whole place to ourselves – it feels almost like  we’re discovering it for the first time”.  The Gymnasium at Cyrene, Libya, with the amphitheatre visible in the background.Image Credit: History Hit Cyrene’s grand architecture – including the colossal Greek gymnasium, a centre of learning and physical fitness lined with Doric columns – was designed to proclaim that visitors were entering the Greek world. Its origins, revealed in ancient writings by Herodotus, were humble: struggling Greek colonists were shown the fertile land by indigenous Libyans. Dan also explores a splendid house complete with an outdoor Hall of the Muses, where rich guests would enjoy music and poetry beneath a warm North African sky.   The city’s immense wealth stemmed from one unique cash crop: Silphium. This legendary plant, which no longer exists, was literally worth its weight in gold due to its supposed healing properties. Dan visits the marketplace where this invaluable commodity was traded, a trade so vital it was thought to be protected by the goddess of agriculture, Demeter. Silphium was transported from Cyrene down to the coast, and then exported to the wealthy centres of the ancient Mediterranean, from Alexandria to Athens and Rome.  Cyrene also exported knowledge. It was the home of the philosopher Aristippus, who founded the hedonistic school of thought focused on pleasure, and his daughter Arete, believed to be the first female philosopher in history. The Temple of Zeus in Cyrene, LibyaImage Credit: History Hit In a unique fusion of storytelling and innovation, History Hit’s film collaborates with Ubisoft to recreate lost parts of the ancient city of Cyrene using stunning imagery from Assassin’s Creed Origins. This allows us to picture what it would have been like to walk these very streets and visit Cyrene’s magnificent theatre, temples and sacred places (including the Temple of Apollo and the spring of Apollo) over 2,000 years ago. From Greek gymnasium to Roman arena Dan charts Cyrene’s evolving identity after the Romans took over in 96 BC due to dynastic squabbles in Ptolemaic Egypt, when they transformed the city to better express their Roman-ness. The massive Greek theatre was converted into a Roman amphitheatre, trading the stage for the arena and gladiatorial shows. People from here continued to feature in accounts of the Roman world, men like Simon of Cyrene who the New Testament says helped to carry Jesus’ cross to his crucifixion.  Dan concludes his journey at the harbour city of Apollonia, which ultimately would overshadow Cyrene. Here, the final transition of the ancient world is visible: the ruins of a Christian basilica, built largely from the recycled plinths and inscriptions of dismantled Roman temples. This basilica reflects the shift to the Byzantine era, proving that the legacy of those ancient civilizations can be explored just as profoundly in Northern Africa as in Athens or Rome. Components of the ancient temple in Apollonia were rearranged by the Byzantines to create a space for Christian worship.Image Credit: History Hit A mainstay of the ancient world As Dan concludes, the sites in Libya are on the same monumental scale as the Parthenon in Athens. They make a powerful claim: the Cyrenians were not some peripheral colonial outpost; they were one of the mainstays of the ancient world. As Dan reflects, It’s easy to forget that the Mediterranean Sea was the centre of the Ancient world. You don’t need to go to Athens or Rome… you can explore them all in Northern Africa. It has been an eye-opening experience.” History Hit’s Head of Programming, Bill Locke, reflects on the team’s experience in Libya: “Filming in Libya was an extraordinary experience – seeing ancient Greek pottery emerging from the cliffs in a previously untouched site by the Mediterranean, and walking through the wonders of Cyrene, the first documentary crew to film there since the fall of Gaddafi.” We’ll be speaking to Bill in more depth soon where we’ll delve deeper to learn more about the team’s fascinating and exclusive experiences filming in a spectacular region where documentaries rarely go. Swalwell Announces He's Running For Governor As Kimmel Calls Trump 'Horrifying'

The lack of distinction between the late night comedy shows and the Democratic Party revealed itself again on Thursday as California Rep. Eric Swalwell received a standing ovation from ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s studio audience after he announced he is running for governor. Swalwell’s announcement came after Kimmel referred to President Trump as “horrifying” and a history of attempting to elect Democrats. Kimmel, who, the last time he interviewed Swalwell, asked if Sen. Ted Cruz eats urinal cakes, put the ball on the tee when he wondered, “You are being now personally investigated by the Justice Department, as are a number of Democrats that Trump doesn't like. Suddenly they're looking into mortgage fraud. What's the story with that?”     Swalwell insisted he’s done nothing wrong, “It's, of course, nonsense just like going after Adam Schiff for mortgage fraud is nonsense. Going after Tish James is nonsense. Going after Ms. Cook, the fed governor, is nonsense, and, you know, shocking, I'll break it to you now, Jimmy. He's probably going to go after someone next week, and it will also be nonsense, but if he thinks for one second that me, Schiff, Cook, Tish James, are going to hide under the bed or shrink or just go quiet, we're not. We're not. And what the American people are saying right now is they want Donald Trump out of our homes, out of our streets, out of our lives, and out of this studio.” That led Kimmel to try to plot strategy, “What are we going to do? How do you stop this?” Getting into full campaign mode, Swalwell declared, “Well, I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I love California. It's the greatest country in the world.” After Kimmel simply asked, “country?” Swalwell rolled on, “Greatest country in the world. But that's why it pisses me off to see Californians running through the fields where they work from ICE agents or troops in our streets.” Kimmel agreed, “It's horrifying. It’s absolutely horrifying.” Continuing with his stump speech, Swalwell parroted the idea and made his announcement: It's horrifying. Or cancer research being canceled. It's awful to look at. And our state, this great state, needs a fighter and a protector. Someone who will bring prices down, lift wages up. And we can say that we're the fourth-largest economy in the world, and we are, and I love to brag about that. But what does that mean if you can't afford to live here? So I've been in these fights as a city councilmember up in Dublin, my hometown. As a prosecutor in Oakland. And taking on the most corrupt president ever in the U.S. Congress. But I'm ready to bring this fight home. So I came here tonight, Jimmy, to tell you and your audience that I'm running to be the next governor of California. I'm excited to do it.” As the audience gave Swalwell a standing ovation, nobody bothered to ask why, given its heavily Democratic government, California is unaffordable to live in. Additionally, Swalwell using Kimmel to make his announcement fits a pattern for the host. Kimmel was the host of the infamous fundraiser that saw former President Barack Obama have to escort President Joe Biden off the stage. Kimmel has also fundraised for Nevada Sen. Jacky Rosen. Here is a transcript for the November 20-taped show: ABC Jimmy Kimmel Live! 11/21/2025 12:28 PM ET JIMMY KIMMEL: You are being now personally investigated by the Justice Department, as are a number of Democrats that Trump doesn't like. ERIC SWALWELL: Yes. KIMMEL: Suddenly they're looking into mortgage fraud. SWALWELL: Yes. KIMMEL: What's the story with that? SWALWELL: It's, of course, nonsense just like going after Adam Schiff for mortgage fraud is nonsense. We're not. And what the American people are saying right now is they want Donald Trump out of our homes, out of our streets, out of our lives, and out of this studio. KIMMEL: I think he wants out of this studio too. SWALWELL: Yes, he does. KIMMEL: What are we going to do? How do you stop this? SWALWELL: Well, I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I love California. It's the greatest country in the world. KIMMEL: Country? SWALWELL: Greatest country in the world. But that's why it pisses me off to see Californians running through the fields where they work from ICE agents or troops in our streets. KIMMEL: It's horrifying. It’s absolutely horrifying SWELWELL: It's horrifying. Or cancer research being canceled. It's awful to look at. And our state, this great state, needs a fighter and a protector. Trump warns Mamdani ahead of high-stakes Oval Office meeting: 'He has to be careful'

President Donald Trump has offered a preview of his highly anticipated meeting with New York City's newly elected socialist mayor. Trump's meeting with Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani (D) in the Oval Office Friday afternoon is proving to be one of the most highly anticipated sit-downs of his second term. Trump described Mamdani, a staunch progressive and outspoken critic of the president, as "a little bit different" but remained optimistic about the meeting. 'I give him a lot of credit.'"He's got a different philosophy," Trump told Brian Kilmeade Friday. "He's a little bit different."One of the focal points of Mamdani's campaign was affordability, an issue that has also been a pillar of Trump's administration. Although their respective solutions to address affordability are at odds, Trump maintained that the two New Yorkers are ultimately "looking for the same thing." RELATED: Is Trump meddling with Mamdani's candidacy? Photo by BG048/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images"I give him a lot of credit for the run. He did a successful run, and we all know that runs are not easy," Trump said. "But I think we'll get along fine. Look, we're looking for the same thing. We want to make New York strong."Since his decisive victory in early November, Mamdani has continued to rail against Trump and his administration. During his victory speech, Mamdani infamously told Trump to "turn the volume up." In response, Trump issued Mamdani a warning but commended his campaign nonetheless. RELATED: Zohran Mamdani becomes first openly socialist mayor of New York City Photo by JIM WATSON/AFP via Getty Images"Well, I was hitting him a little hard too, in all fairness," Trump said. "It's hard to be totally friendly to the opponent, you know. ... He had some interesting opponents. But he ran a good race. I don't know exactly what he means by 'turn the volume up' because 'turn the volume up,' he has to be careful when he says that to me.""I think it's going to be quite civil. You'll find out."Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!

Bugs for thee, beef for me: How big business monopolizes meat

Bugs for thee, beef for me: How big business monopolizes meat

President Trump is right to turn his gaze toward the meatpacking industry. It’s one of the dirtiest businesses in America — not just in hygiene, but in habit. I grew up around beef cattle, familiar with the blood and bone that keep this machine alive. What was once a farmer’s trade has become a monopoly’s empire. Four corporations now control nearly 85% of U.S. beef processing. They set the prices, squeeze the ranchers, and pass the pain to consumers — all while preaching “market efficiency,” that modern hymn for exploitation. When the men who raise the cattle can’t afford to eat steak and the companies that kill them post record earnings, something stinks — and it isn’t the beef. The transformation wasn’t sudden. It crept in, one merger at a time, one farm foreclosure after another. The local slaughterhouse — once a fixture of every rural county — vanished, replaced by sprawling steel citadels where flesh and spirit move down the same assembly line. The small family business that once sponsored Little League or donated to the parish fundraiser is gone, its name buried beneath a global brand logo. What remains is meat without meaning: shrink-wrapped, standardized, and severed from life.Bled dryThe result is as dire as it is deliberate. Independent ranchers are being bled dry. Farmers sell out not because they want to, but because the alternative is bankruptcy. When four conglomerates dictate what you earn, what you buy, and what you eat, the free market ceases to be free — it becomes feudal. The serfs still wear denim and drive pickups, but they serve the same masters: corporate overlords with billion-dollar appetites and offshore addresses.Consumers don’t fare much better. They pay more for lesser cuts, duped into believing the illusion of abundance. The supermarket shelves are full of choice, but the choice has already been made. The labels may differ, but the profits lead to the same boardrooms. When the men who raise the cattle can’t afford to eat steak and the companies that kill them post record earnings, something stinks — and it isn’t the beef.RELATED: 'Farmer' George Clooney wouldn't last a minute with my family's sheep Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/Andia/Getty ImagesCorporate cleaversThe story is no different across the Atlantic. In Europe, the meat trade has been quietly butchered by the same corporate cleavers. Small abattoirs — the lifeblood of rural France, Ireland, and Spain — have disappeared beneath the weight of regulation and consolidation. What used to be an honest trade of handshakes and hanging carcasses is now ruled by faceless conglomerates answering to Brussels and shareholders in Frankfurt. The European Union speaks loftily of “sustainability,” but its policies have done more to sustain monopolies than livelihoods.Ask a French farmer about EU policy, and you’ll get a shrug somewhere between despair and disgust. In Ireland, cattle farmers — men like my father, who once fed nations through famine and war — now feed debt. In Germany, abattoir workers live in company dorms, shipped in from Eastern Europe to keep costs down. The romance of the pastoral has been replaced by the cold arithmetic of the spreadsheet. From beef to bugsMeanwhile, consumers are told to eat less meat “for the planet.” How convenient for the corporations that now sell the alternatives — lab-grown patties and insect protein, neatly packaged in recyclable guilt. They’ve found a way to profit from both sides of the moral ledger: first by monopolizing real meat, then by marketing its replacement. It’s a master class in hypocrisy and a catastrophe for the working class.Trump’s decision to investigate the industry won’t fix a century of collusion overnight, but it is a long-overdue reckoning. For decades, Democrats and Republicans alike treated Big Meat as too big to question. The lobbyists wrote the laws, the lawyers buried the lawsuits, and the bureaucrats looked away. The result is a landscape where cattle ranchers depend on corporations that despise them and consumers rely on supply chains that could snap at any moment.Food, the most basic human need, has become another instrument of control. When you own the meat, you own the man. Farmers used to raise herds; now they herd invoices and inspectors. It’s tempting to believe that this system is simply broken. It isn’t. It works exactly as designed — to enrich the few and exhaust the many. The old rural ideal of self-reliance has been slaughtered on the altar of efficiency. What we are left with is a parody of plenty: full shelves, empty towns, and even emptier pockets..Trump’s probe may not slay the beast, but at least someone is willing to pull back the curtain and show the nation what’s really being carved up. For decades, the Big Four packers have sliced the market to ribbons, fixing prices while farmers starved and consumers paid the bill. Now, for the first time in generations, there’s a man in power with the will to carve them up instead. Call it poetic justice: The butchers may finally find themselves on the block.
