CNN was first to report that the dismissals were underway. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Trump named Pulte the acting director this month and said on Truth Social that he had “asked him to execute the immediate and needed downsizing of the office, reverting staff to their home agencies.” Pulte, who has no background in national security matters, has been serving as head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. A separate source with knowledge of the matter told NBC News over the weekend that Pulte had ordered staff members to identify 400 employees to be fired from the National Counterterrorism Center, which is part of the U.S. intelligence community, in the coming weeks. Pulte issued the instruction late Thursday — before he officially took over for outgoing Director Tulsi Gabbard, the source said. He started his new post Friday. The potential cuts at the counterterrorism center are focused on an office set up after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to monitor terrorist threats and suspected militants and to pool information from across federal agencies. Former intelligence officials have said reductions at the counterterrorism center could jeopardize the government’s ability to detect and prevent terrorist plots. A federal appeals court has just cleared the way for the Trump administration to ramp up fast-track deportations. In a 2-1 decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit overturned a lower court ruling blocking the DHS from expanding “expedited removal” of illegal immigrants. In effect, this means that illegal aliens who have been in the United States for less than two years can be deported without first appearing before an immigration judge. Up until this year, the expedited removal process was only used to deport illegal immigrants at the border. But, the DHS sought to expand that process to illegal aliens apprehended anywhere in the U.S. This was quickly blocked by a Biden-appointed activist judge after an immigration rights group sued. Today’s ruling tosses out that lower-court ruling, giving the DHS the go-ahead to largely expedite deportations. Reuters has more details: A panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled 2-1 to overturn a decision by a judge who in August 2025 blocked the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s move ​to expand who qualifies for expedited removal. That expedited removal process has for nearly three decades been used to ​quickly return migrants apprehended at the border. But in January 2025, the administration expanded its scope ⁠to cover non-citizens apprehended anywhere in the U.S. who could not show that they had been in the country for two ​years. The policy mirrored one the Trump administration adopted in 2019 that the Biden administration later rescinded. After the immigrant rights advocacy ​group Make the Road New York sued, U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb blocked the enforcement of those new policies, saying they violate the constitutional due process rights of migrants who could be apprehended anywhere in the U.S. But the D.C. Circuit disagreed in a ruling authored by U.S. Circuit ​Judge Justin Walker, a Trump appointee, who said that the Trump administration was allowed to expand “expedited removal to the maximum ​extent allowed by Congress.” He said migrants are given notice that DHS is placing them in expedited removal and receive a chance to object, ‌including ⁠by showing that they have been continually present in the U.S. for two years. “At most, the district court’s findings show that Congress’s expedited screening system operates quickly and with practical constraints — features the statute itself contemplates,” he wrote. “They do not show that the challenged directives deprive aliens of a meaningful opportunity to be heard.” The only Obama-appointed judge on the D.C. Circuit dissented. Per the New York Times: Judge Justin R. Walker, a Trump appointee, wrote the majority opinion, joined by Judge Neomi Rao, also a Trump appointee. Judge Robert L. A federal jury in Chicago convicted a suburban Illinois man for posting a violent online video that threatened President Trump and a long list of public officials. Trent Schneider, 58, of Winthrop Harbor, was found guilty in March 2026 after a three-day trial in U.S. District Court. The charge was making a true threat in interstate commerce to injure a person. Prosecutors said the threats hit federal and state officials, including judges, doctors, lawyers, and police. One of his targets was the President of the United States. According to prosecutors, he said people should die, said he would get guns, and said President Trump should be executed. The same day he posted the video, DOJ said, Schneider showed up at the Lake County courthouse and told a judge and others he would burn the courthouse down. That is the part that makes the sentencing ceiling so hard to accept. Prosecutors described public threats, gun language, execution language, and a courthouse threat in the same story, then took it through a full federal trial before the jury returned a conviction in Chicago after three days of testimony and arguments in court. The conviction carries a maximum of five years in federal prison. DOJ said a sentencing date had not yet been set. The punishment phase is still ahead. The statutory cap is already visible: five years. For a threat case involving President Trump, public officials, guns, death language, and a courthouse, that ceiling feels shockingly small. The case did not start with federal agents stumbling onto the post. It started with a citizen who saw something and said something. CWBChicago reported that a concerned citizen in Florida spotted the video and reported it to authorities. The outlet reported that the Secret Service tracked the post to Schneider’s home near the Wisconsin border, where agents and local police saw cameras mounted on tripods in the driveway. Prosecutors linked Schneider to the Instagram account through subscriber records and a facial comparison with his Illinois driver’s license photo, according to CWBChicago. The report also said he posted multiple variations of the video and graphics in the days that followed, some geotagged to Trump Tower’s location in Chicago. That matters because prosecutors were not relying on one stray sentence stripped from context or one isolated angry outburst online. The Secret Service Chicago Field Office investigated alongside the FBI Chicago Field Office and local law enforcement. At trial, the defense leaned on an unusual argument. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that defense attorney Michael Leonard told jurors Schneider was a major Trump supporter and questioned whether the comments amounted to a true threat. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paige Nutini argued the words were clearly and unmistakably an intent to commit violence, the Sun-Times reported. The jury agreed with the government. The Sun-Times also reported that U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman had not committed at verdict time to keeping Schneider in custody pending sentencing, and that he had already been held since his November arrest. That made the post-verdict posture unusually tense for a case built around public threats against powerful officials, police, lawyers, doctors, prosecutors, and judges at trial. That detail matters because the public sees the pattern. Threats are made, agents respond, prosecutors bring the case, jurors convict, and then the punishment window can still look painfully narrow. For ordinary Americans, the defense argument only sharpened the point: political affinity does not erase the seriousness of words about guns, death, execution, and public officials. His behavior in court before that arrest set the tone for the case. The system worked the way it should here. A citizen flagged a violent video, the Secret Service and FBI ran it down, and twelve jurors looked at the evidence and convicted. Now Schneider waits to learn his sentence. But if the maximum is five years for threats like this, Americans are right to ask whether the law is taking political violence seriously enough before someone actually pulls a trigger. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana just told conservatives to quit on the SAVE America Act. His excuse was simple: it does not have the votes, so it is time to talk about something else. That is stunning coming from any Republican senator. It is even worse coming from a co-sponsor who was on the Senate floor this spring demanding that Democrats stop blocking the same bill. WTF?! Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) just told MAGA to GIVE UP on the SAVE America Act and secure elections CASSIDY: "Time to talk about something else." This is how they ALWAYS FELT about us! Cassidy did not say he was regrouping, forcing a vote, naming names, or keeping pressure on weak Republicans. He told people to move on. The clip traces back to Nicole Silverio of the Daily Caller, who posted that Cassidy told her he remained a co-sponsor, but that the bill did not have the votes and it was time to discuss something else. That is the heart of the betrayal: Cassidy is not an outside critic explaining Senate math from the sidelines. He is a Republican senator whose name is attached to the bill. When a co-sponsor starts telling the grassroots to stop fighting, the message is surrender dressed up as realism. Now compare that to what Cassidy was saying before Louisiana Republicans ended his political future. Cassidy’s own Senate office said on April 23 that he delivered a floor speech urging the Senate to pass the SAVE America Act and accusing Democrats of ignoring the will of the American people. His office described the bill as requiring proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections, a basic election-security measure that should not be controversial. The same official release called Cassidy a proud co-sponsor and said he supported using the talking filibuster to push the bill through. Just weeks earlier in March, his office said he had urged senators to look at every avenue available to pass it. Every avenue in March and April. Time to talk about something else in June. Call it what it is: a total collapse. The timing matters because Cassidy is now a lame duck. AP News reported that Cassidy was decisively defeated in Louisiana’s Republican primary, finishing behind Rep. Julia Letlow, who had President Trump’s backing, and state Treasurer John Fleming. Those two advanced to a June 27 runoff, while Cassidy failed to convince Republican voters he deserved another term. AP tied that collapse to the political wound Cassidy never healed: his vote to convict President Trump during the 2021 impeachment fight. The report also showed how far Cassidy had fallen inside his own party, from sitting Republican senator to eliminated incumbent before the runoff even began. Cassidy remains in the Senate until the end of his term. Louisiana Republicans have already stripped him of any future mandate. Senator Mike Lee was not buying the surrender logic. So … when something “doesn’t have the votes” we’re supposed to give up on it, but only if it’s a popular bill like the SAVE America Act? When a less popular bill like FISA 702 reauthorization supposedly lacks the votes, the Senate is told to keep grinding. When a wildly popular election-security bill lacks the votes, Cassidy suddenly wants the room to change subjects. That is exactly backwards. The official bill page shows why conservatives are not letting this go. Congress.gov lists H.R.22 as the SAVE Act, sponsored by Rep. Chip Roy and introduced January 3, 2025. The House passed it 220-208 on April 10, 2025, and sent it to the Senate that same day. The Congressional summary says the bill would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. It would also bar states from accepting federal registration applications without that proof and require alternative processes for people who need to provide citizenship evidence. The same summary says states would have to keep taking ongoing steps to ensure only citizens remain registered and remove noncitizens from voter rolls. The bill also includes enforcement provisions, which is why conservatives see it as a real election-security fight rather than a symbolic messaging bill. In plain English, the bill says American elections should be for American citizens. President Trump has not stopped pushing for it. Axios reported on June 18 that President Trump kept leaning on Senate Republicans even after being warned that the votes were not there. The report said he tied FISA renewal and other legislative priorities to passage of the proof-of-citizenship bill, putting pressure on Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the GOP conference. Axios also reported that White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson called the SAVE America Act a top priority and commonsense legislation to secure elections. So the White House is still pushing, House conservatives are still pushing, and the voters who sent President Trump back to the White House are still pushing. Cassidy is the one telling everyone to accept defeat. And House conservatives are escalating at the exact moment Cassidy is folding. The Houston Chronicle reported on June 23 that Rep. Chip Roy and 24 other House Republicans pledged to vote against legislation until the Senate passes the SAVE Act. The report framed the bill as a major test for Republicans under pressure from President Trump before the midterms. It also named Texas Republicans Keith Self, Michael Cloud, and Brandon Gill among the House members joining the pressure campaign. In other words, some Republicans are willing to use their votes as leverage, while Cassidy is using the absence of votes as an excuse. That is why this quote blew up. The fight has not changed. He just stopped having a reason to pretend. That is the ugly lesson here: the second Cassidy no longer needed Republican voters, the urgency disappeared. The SAVE America Act may or may not have the votes today. The whole point of leadership is to force the fight until everyone has to take a side.
