Queen released a never heard ballad sung by Freddie Mercury and it had fans in tears

This article originally appeared on 10.14.22Freddie Mercury had a voice and a stage presence unlike any other in rock music history. His unique talents helped propel the band Queen to the top of music charts and created a loyal fan base around the world. Sadly, the world lost that voice when Mercury died of AIDS at age 45. For decades, most of us have assumed we'd heard all the music we were going to hear from him. However, according to Yahoo! Entertainment, remaining Queen members Roger Taylor and Brian May announced this summer that they had found a never-released song they'd recorded with Mercury in 1988 as they were working on the album "The Miracle." “We did find a little gem from Freddie, that we’d kind of forgotten about,” Taylor said in June, according to the BBC. "It's wonderful, a real discovery. It's a very passionate piece."That "little gem" is a four-minute ballad called "Face It Alone." Queen released a lyric video of the song on its YouTube channel, and it's bringing fans to tears. The lyrics are particularly heart-wrenching, considering the timing of the song's recording. Mercury was reportedly diagnosed with HIV in 1987, though kept it a secret from the public and even from many who worked closely with him until shortly before his death. Comments have poured in from around the world in multiple languages, and the sentiment is universal—people are deeply moved. "Over 3 million views in one day. To hear Freddie's voice again is so special. You live forever, darling. The song is heart breaking but then again, Queen's songs are from the heart and that can never go wrong. Thank you to all who made it happen." – sweet pea"One day Freddie said: 'I won't be a star, I will be a Legend' And yes we all agree, he STILL REMAINS A LEGEND even after 31 years after his death. AMAZING." – Gloria Sousa"Freddie’s vocal is killing me same today as 20 years ago. Thank You Queen for this amazing gift after so many years. We love You." – Adrian Kufel"What to say?? A great magnificent surprise. All I know is that I cried the moment I heard this voice, these words.... Only Freddie. Love this man for eternity.. It seems as if he returned briefly to us!! To send us a message... What a beautiful present for all his fans, for this generation that has had the impact of the pandemic, this strange war, these strange times. So happy and touched to hear this now. Thank you Queen... Thank you Freddie forever !!!" – Fern 19671"So great to see all the Freddie and Queen fans here today celebrating this song and Freddie's amazing voice. I love how much Freddie is still treasured. I remember the day he passed away, how I cried. It's like a gift to get this new song and have his song playing loud throughout the house today. We all love you dear Freddie." - Sarah-Louise ASMRMercury was truly a legend in his own time, and hearing his voice anew almost makes it feel like he's time-traveled to the here and now. What a lovely gift for Queen fans everywhere.

A police officer makes a profound statement after pulling over a Black teen

“Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value."In October 2016, that was a quote from Albert Einstein that sat atop the Facebook page of Tim McMillan, a police officer in Georgia. McMillan become a sensation after a post he wrote on his Facebook wall went viral in 2016. In his post, he explains how he pulled over a Black teen for texting while driving:“I pulled a car over last night for texting and driving. When I went to talk to the driver, I found a young black male, who was looking at me like he was absolutely terrified with his hands up. He said, 'What do you want me to do officer?' His voice was quivering. He was genuinely scared," McMillan wrote. But McMillan said he wasn't interested in harassing or arresting the young man, let alone inflicting violence upon him. Nonetheless, the teen's emotional response hit McMillan like a punch to the gut.“I just looked at him for a moment, because what I was seeing made me sad. I said, 'I just don't want you to get hurt.' In which he replied, with his voice still shaking, 'Do you want me to get out of the car.' I said, 'No, I don't want you to text and drive. I don't want you to get in a wreck. I want your mom to always have her baby boy. I want you to grow up and be somebody. I don't even want to write you a ticket. Just please pay attention, and put the phone down. I just don't want you to get hurt,'" he wrote.McMillan said the interaction made him reflect on a deeply personal level about the national attention being paid to acts of police violence against Black Americans, particularly young Black men.“I truly don't even care who's fault it is that young man was so scared to have a police officer at his window. Blame the media, blame bad cops, blame protestors, or Colin Kaepernick if you want. It doesn't matter to me who's to blame. I just wish somebody would fix it."This story originally appeared on GOOD.This article originally appeared on 08.31.18

A dad's hilarious letter to school asks them to explain why they're living in 1968

A dad's hilarious letter to school asks them to explain why they're living in 1968

Earlier in the week, Stephen Callaghan's daughter Ruby came home from school. When he asked her how her day was, her answer made him raise an eyebrow.Ruby, who's in the sixth grade at her school in Australia, told her dad that the boys would soon be taken on a field trip to Bunnings (a hardware chain in the area) to learn about construction. The girls, on the other hand? While the boys were out learning, they would be sent to the library to have their hair and makeup done.Ruby's reply made Callaghan do a double take. What year was it, again?Callaghan decided to write a letter to the school sharing his disappointment — but his wasn't your typical "outraged parent" letter."Dear Principal," he began. "I must draw your attention to a serious incident which occurred yesterday at your school where my daughter is a Year 6 student.""When Ruby left for school yesterday it was 2017," Callaghan continued. "But when she returned home in the afternoon she was from 1968."The letter goes on to suggest that perhaps the school is harboring secret time-travel technology or perhaps has fallen victim to a rift in the "space-time continuum," keeping his daughter in an era where women were relegated to domestic life by default."I look forward to this being rectified and my daughter and other girls at the school being returned to this millennium where school activities are not sharply divided along gender lines," he concluded.Dear PrincipalI must draw your attention to a serious incident which occurred yesterday at your school where my daughter Ruby is a Year 6 student. When Ruby left for school yesterday it was 2017 but when she returned home in the afternoon she was from 1968.I know this to be the case as Ruby informed me that the "girls" in Year 6 would be attending the school library to get their hair and make-up done on Monday afternoon while the "boys" are going to Bunnings. Are you able to search the school buildings for a rip in the space-time continuum? Perhaps there is a faulty Flux Capacitor hidden away in the girls toilet block.I look forward to this being rectified and my daughter and other girls at the school being returned to this millennium where school activities are not sharply divided along gender lines.Yours respectfullyStephen CallaghanWhen Callaghan posted the letter to Twitter, it quickly went viral and inspired hundreds of supportive responses.Though most people who saw his response to the school's egregiously outdated activities applauded him, not everyone was on board. One commenter wrote, "Sometimes it is just ok for girls to do girl things."But Callaghan was ready for that. "Never said it wasn't," he replied. "But you've missed the point. Why 'girl things' or 'boy things'... Why not just 'things anyone can do?'"He later commented that he didn't think the school's plan was malicious, but noted the incident was a powerful example of "everyday sexism" at work.Callaghan says the school hasn't responded to his letter. (Yes, he really sent it.) At least, not directly to him. Some media outlets have reported that the school claims students are free to opt in and out of the different activities. But, as Callaghan says, gendering activities like this in the first place sends the completely wrong message. In response to the outpouring of support, Callaghan again took to Twitter."At 12 years of age my daughter is starting to notice there are plenty of people prepared to tell her what she can and can't do based solely on the fact she is female," he wrote."She would like this to change. So would I."This article originally appeared on 12.08.17.

Americans in U.S. Open Finals!

With a roar and a mighty overhead smash Aryna Sabalenka announced there would be no all-American women’s final at the U.S. Open. She put an end to Emma Navarro’s Cinderella run to the semis, dictating with power and precision through the second set tiebreak. The Australian Open winner and world no. 2 was, to be sure, expected be playing on the last day of the Grand Slam season, but this U.S. Open has been so full of surprises that, ya never know, Miss Navarro might pull another upset. She played with what the audiences here have come to recognize as a unique combination of elegance and intelligence, and if she could not turn back Miss Sabalenka’s deep powerful groundstrokes and huge serve in the first set, she did make it more competitive than the score, 6-2, might suggest, keeping rallies going and placing adroit winners. If the hope of an all-American women’s final dashed, Jessica Pegula pulled off one of the great rallies of the fortnight, as she rallied after being completely outplayed in the first set of her semi-final match against Karolina Muchova. Hanging on to a serve that had been problematic in the first week, inspired no doubt by her upset of the favorite, Iga Swiatek, in the quarter-finals, Miss Pegula found her feet, her long strokes, and above all her will and disrupted Miss Muchova’s beautifully effective combination of net-approaches, volleys, and high-pace forehands. It was a great and deserved win for the humble girl from Buffalo, N.Y., who had never got past a quarter-final on the Slam circuit (she has however been in every one this year). Between Jessica Pegula’s win and Emma Navarro, American women’s tennis continues to show its depth and strength. Following a long drought, American men, as well, are in deep in the second week, and there will be an American man in the final for the first time since Andy Roddick in 2003, as one of the semis is between Marylander Frances Tiafoe and Califonian Taylor Fritz. Stay tuned for the finals: Can Jessica find a way to disrupt Aryna? Can either Big Foe of Taylor out play Jannik Sinner, assuming he beats the surging Britisher, Jack Draper? What someone over at the Mets, who play across the street, once noted applies as well at Flushing Meadows: the drama is never over, until it’s over. German police covered up rape at bathhouse
Published 6 September 2024 at 13:47
Foreign Affairs. German police are accused of a cover-up after taking three weeks to report a rape that took place in a bathhouse against a 12-year-old girl, the local newspaper Braunschweiger Zeitungreveals . There is now speculation that the cover-up was because the perpetrator was Arab.

A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped at a bathhouse in Braunschweig, Germany. A 15-year-old Arab boy is suspected of first molesting the girl in the pool and then raping her in a changing room.
The incident took place on 10 August, but it took three weeks for the information to become public, with police stating that they did not immediately release information ‘because of the girl's young age’.
The case became known after a reader contacted the local newspaper Braunschweiger Zeitung, which then asked questions of the authorities.
A spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office, Christian Wolters, explained that the investigation is still at an early stage and that evidence collection is ongoing.
Police have identified the suspected offender and taken his personal details, but no legal action has yet been taken against him.
He has been assigned a lawyer and the authorities have not decided to detain him. The management of the bathhouse has announced that the suspect will be banned from entering as soon as they have received the necessary information.
The incident has sparked political debate and critics have expressed concern that serious crimes do not receive enough attention when the perpetrators are immigrants.
Local politicians are now calling for a sharper discussion on how these incidents are handled, especially when immigrants are involved, writes the Braunschweiger Zeitung.
