Advanced stage: The tumor has a variable‚ irregular diameter and is ulcerated. The advanced phase is often associated with regional adenopathy (enlarged local lymph nodes). However‚ there is a type of squamous cell carcinoma that is known as Bowenoid carcinoma or Bowen’s disease.2 This carcinoma is a multicentric squamous cell carcinoma and occurs in several areas of the body‚ but is not technically a metastatic cancer. What causes this loss of control does vary and usually several changes have to happen to cells before they will result in the growth of a tumor. In most cases‚ the cause of squamous cell carcinoma in cats is the prolonged exposure of unprotected skin areas (unpigmented‚ hairless areas) to UV rays. The UV rays cause damage to the skin cells. Cats between the ages of 7 and 15 are most commonly affected by this type of cancer. In the case of oral localization‚ squamous cell carcinoma represents approximately 80% of oral tumors reported in cats‚ affecting cats 12–13 years old. Compared to the cutaneous form‚ oral squamous cell carcinoma is more aggressive and malignant. How Is Squamous Cell Carcinoma Diagnosed in Cats? A thorough general examination will highlight the presence of skin lesions. If the vet suspects squamous cell carcinoma‚ they will recommend a cytological examination. Your cat will be put under local or general anesthesia‚ and tumoral cells will be collected through fine needle aspiration. However‚ for a definitive diagnosis‚ a biopsy may also be recommended. This means the vet will remove a piece of the tumor or excise it completely and send it to the lab for diagnosis. Additional tests can also be recommended‚ such as blood tests (to assess the general state of health) and chest X-rays (to see if the tumor has spread to the lungs—i.e.‚ if it has metastasized). Fortunately‚ metastasis is rare‚ but it can spread to the lungs‚ liver and kidneys.  In addition‚ the vet can also recommend a CT scan to determine the extent of the disease‚ especially in cases where the cancer occurs in the mouth. Depending on the severity of the tumor and how much it has spread to the surrounding tissues‚ the treatment options for squamous cell carcinoma can be the following. Surgical intervention: In general‚ it is recommended that the excision of the tumor be done completely and widely because the recurrence rate for incomplete tumor resections is frequent. In the case of oral carcinoma‚ this is often extremely challenging due to the location of the tumor‚ and the fact that it has usually grown significantly by the time it is detected. Treatment for oral carcinoma may involve multiple modalities‚ but even so‚ the prognosis is often poor. Radiation therapy: In cases where the tumor is incompletely removed‚ radiotherapy can help delay or prevent relapse. If the tumor has not been surgically removed‚ radiation therapy can help slow tumor growth. Cryotherapy: Freezing the tumor or tumor margins can be a useful technique for masses that are difficult to access‚ particularly oral carcinoma. Chemotherapy: This type of therapy has minimal or no benefits in treating squamous cell cancer in cats because this type of cancer is considered resistant to traditional chemotherapy. However‚ there has been some success with injecting chemotherapeutic drugs directly into the tumor itself. Tyrosine-kinase inhibitors (toceranib phosphate‚ e.g.‚ Palladia): This type of drug controls cellular functions like replication‚ growth‚ differentiation‚ etc. Studies have shown that cats with squamous cell carcinoma have a longer average survival time (123 days compared to 45 days in cats that have not been treated with toceranib). Other medications: Certain medications‚ such as COX inhibitors (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories) or buprenorphine (synthetic opioid)‚ can increase your cat’s comfort through the analgesic effect that they have. Oral antibiotics can also be prescribed if your cat has secondary infections. How Do I Care for a Cat With Squamous Cell Carcinoma? If your vet recommends surgical excision of your cat’s squamous cell carcinoma‚ time is of the essence. The earlier the mass is removed‚ the higher the chance of success. Once the tumor grows into deeper tissues‚ particularly if it affects the bone‚ prognosis is much less favorable. If your cat has been diagnosed with oral squamous cell carcinoma‚ surgery may not be recommended‚ depending on the size and location of the mass. You may be referred to a veterinary oncologist to discuss the options. Even if you opt for palliative (end of life) treatment‚ which is very reasonable with this form of the cancer‚ it is always good to know your options. According to Deadline‚ the actor will star in the upcoming action sci-fi film‚ War Machine. The title suggests what kind of movie this might be‚ and the logline—the only other piece of information we have about the plot—supports this conclusion. Here’s the logline‚ complete with its grammatical snafus: “In the final 24 Hours of the world’s toughest selection process‚ a team of Army Rangers encounter a threat beyond their imagination.” This is a sci-fi movie‚ so I bet a dollar that this “threat beyond their imagination” is aliens and/or a rogue Artificial Intelligence bent on killing us all. Ritchson is undoubtedly one of those Army Rangers who encounters something beyond the scope of his comprehension and‚ most likely‚ does everything he can to murder it first. This is all speculation‚ of course. Time will tell if I’m right. War Machine comes to us from Patrick Hughes‚ the director behind The Hitman’s Bodyguard‚ a 2017 action comedy film starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson where Reynold’s character‚ a disgraced CIA operative‚ has to protect Jackson’s character‚ a hitman about to testify in a trial‚ from other hitmen trying to kill him. That film earned a 44% Rotten Tomatoes score and Hughes’ 2021 sequel‚ The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard‚ chalked up a 26% critics rating‚ though the audience scored it better at 79%. The comedic slant to these films makes me curious whether War Machine will also take that approach. I’m more interested in it if it does‚ as that tone would be more intriguing and less well-trodden than a grim tale about how some incomprehensible threat is set to destroy us all. Hughes along with James Beaufort wrote the script for War Machine. The movie is produced by Lionsgate and will make its way to Netflix at some point in the future. The more I play Dragon’s Dogma 2‚ the more I’m starting to get you can’t just use normal attacks to bring down the larger creatures. Griffins and Drakes are climable‚ but they can fly away while you’re riding them and throw you off. The word broke on March 26 that NBC News was reversing its decision to hire former Republican Party chair Ronna McDaniel as a political commentator. MSNBC hosts across the schedule broke out into frenzied denunciations of whichever executive who thought that McDaniel should be paid to speak anywhere on this hypnotically/robotically anti-Trump network. In one of her typical half-hour jeremiads‚ Rachel Maddow compared McDaniel to a mobster and a pickpocket. “You wouldn’t—you wouldn’t hire a wise guy‚ you wouldn’t hire a made man‚ like a mobster‚ to work at a DA’s office‚ right? You wouldn’t hire a pickpocket to work as a TSA screener. And so I find the decision to put her on the payroll inexplicable. And I hope they will reverse their decision.” There was no need for NBC News to hire McDaniel. One can look at the election results during her tenure at the Republican National Committee and question her expertise at winning elections. But this mobster talk underlines once again that MSNBC is not a “news” channel. It’s a hyperbole channel‚ constantly fearmongering its audience that the end times are near for democracy. Maddow claimed this hiring wasn’t about Republicans vs. Democrats. It’s about “bad actors trying to use the rights and privileges of democracy to end democracy.” There are no “fact-checkers” who will get in the way of this talk. Maddow is like Bluto in “Animal House” saying‚ “when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.” Facts don’t matter. Rallying your audience is all that matters. This was the essence of Maddow’s rant: I want to associate myself with all my colleagues both at MSNBC and at NBC News who have voiced loud and principled objections to our company putting on the payroll someone who hasn’t just attacked us as journalists‚ but someone who is part of an ongoing project to get rid of our system of government. Someone who still is trying to convince Americans that this election stuff‚ it doesn’t really work. That this last election‚ it wasn’t a real result. That American elections are fraudulent. Every conservative who’s ever watched Maddow lowlights knows that she was a leader in the Collusion Corps‚ someone who obsessed night after night over how the 2016 election was fraudulent because the Russians interfered with it. MSNBC doesn’t suggest that every election is fraudulent. It’s only when Democrats lose that they imply (for years) that it was fraudulent. Since Hillary Clinton lost the election in 2016 and ran around telling people it was stolen from her‚ Maddow has hosted a series of fawnathons with her. They discussed why Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to back Donald Trump in 2016. In 2018‚ Clinton even suggested the Russians may have used the National Rifle Association to funnel money into the election. Maddow concluded by lobbying the executives who allow her on air: “Acknowledge that maybe it wasn’t the right call. It is a sign of strength‚ not weakness‚ to acknowledge when you are wrong. It is a sign of strength. And our country needs us to be strong right now.” That may be the funniest line of all. Maddow is notorious for refusing to concede she’s wrong‚ especially about Trump. In 2019‚ Washington Post media critic Erik Wemple constructed a devastating timeline of all of Maddow’s promotions of the baseless dungpile called the Steele Dossier. He noted Maddow called it “creepy” and “unwarranted” when Michael Isikoff said she’d “given a lot of credence” to the dossier on his podcast. Why couldn’t she acknowledge she was wrong? FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—YouTube has permanently deleted a deceased psychological therapist’s account for using “hate speech‚” citing a 1994 debate in which he referred to a book with the word “sissy” in the title. “By silencing scientific debate they don’t like‚ YouTube is effectively shaping the public conversation about trauma and sexuality‚” Joseph Nicolosi Jr.‚ founder of the Reintegrative Therapy Association and son of the late Joseph Nicolosi Sr.‚ told The Daily Signal in an emailed statement Wednesday. “They’re only letting the public (and people who are struggling with their sexuality) hear one side of the discussion‚ and in doing so‚ they’re misleading the very same people they claim they want to protect—individuals who struggle with trauma and their sexuality‚” Nicolosi added. Nicolosi‚ whose father was born in 1947 and died in 2017‚ now runs his father’s YouTube channel. He says the channel has been active for 15 years‚ with videos receiving more than 1 million total views. Yet on Feb. 28‚ YouTube deleted one of the channel’s videos‚ a debate from 1994‚ for violating the platform’s “hate speech policy.” YouTube cited a time stamp in the video—which remains available on X—where Nicolosi’s father cites the 1987 book “The Sissy Boy Syndrome: The Development of Homosexuality‚” written by psychologist Richard Green. The very next day‚ YouTube flagged another video‚ which the younger Nicolosi told The Daily Signal he thinks was a mistake. The younger Nicolosi appealed the video’s deletion‚ and YouTube restored the account on March 10‚ only to delete it on March 11 for “severe or repeated violations of our hate speech policy.” “After taking another look‚ we can confirm that your channel does not violate our Community Guidelines‚” YouTube initially said in an email.
