Do Vitamin Supplements Just Give You

Do Vitamin Supplements Just Give You "Expensive Urine"?

You’ve probably heard the 5-a-day rule intended to help us reach our nutritional needs with fruit and veg – but when diets fall short‚ vitamin supplements have long been used as a way to make up for the shortfall. But do they really work? Or‚ as some have suggested‚ do vitamins just give us expensive urine? What’s this “expensive urine” you speak of?Anyone who’s ever consumed a supplement with B vitamins will tell you it does vibrant things to your urine‚ a side effect so common that the fizzing experts at Berocca even address it on their website.“All Berocca products contain B vitamins‚ as these are water-soluble so your body takes what it needs and discards the rest. The presence of B vitamins in your urine can result in a more intense color. This is harmless and not a cause for any concern.”It’s a glowing demonstration that not everything we consume in supplement form ends up doing much other than coming straight out the other end. However‚ it’s not an "a-ha!" moment for vitamin efficacy‚ as how much we absorb and discard comes down to our unique physiologies. Our vitamin needs can be met by a balanced diet if we're otherwise healthy‚ but not everybody has access to one.Image credit: Marilyn Barbone / Shutterstock.com“Vitamins are always absorbed but the bioavailability (amount taken up by the body) can differ depending on certain factors‚” Dr Carrie Ruxton‚ a dietitian at the Health and Food Supplements Information Service (HSIS) told IFLScience."These include age (older people absorb less B vitamins and make less vitamin D in the body in response to sunlight)‚ dietary inhibitors (high-fiber plant foods can reduce mineral absorption while calcium-rich foods can inhibit iron absorption)‚ dietary promoters (protein enhances mineral absorption‚ vitamin C enhances iron absorption while dietary fat enhances vitamin A‚ D‚ E and K absorption‚ so add some oil or butter to your vegetables).”Back in 1992‚ then-professor of medicine at New York City's Mount Sinai medical school Dr Victor Herbert told Time magazine that popping vitamins “doesn’t do you any good […] We get all the vitamins we need in our diets. Taking supplements just gives you expensive urine."The catchphrase caught on‚ but we’ve learned a lot more about vitamins in the three decades since. Why do we need vitamins? The word "supplement" means to add something in order to complete or enhance it‚ and in the context of vitamins‚ that means plussing up our diet.“The main reason is that people have moved away from the recommended healthy diet of fruit‚ vegetables‚ wholegrains‚ fish‚ lean fresh meat‚ dairy foods‚ tea‚ and tap water towards diets that are high in sugary sodas‚ crisps‚ confectionery‚ biscuits‚ ready meals‚ and takeaways‚” explained Ruxton. “These popular options are high in calories but low in vitamins‚ minerals‚ polyphenols‚ and healthy fats‚ like omega-3s. The Global Burden of Disease study estimated that poor diet is now the primary modifiable cause of chronic diseases‚ responsible for around a fifth of deaths worldwide.”In an ideal world‚ we’d all be able to get everything we needed‚ nutritionally speaking‚ from our diets – but that isn't always attainable. Vitamins have therefore been suggested for use in numerous settings beyond the supplements you see in drug stores.A Lucky Iron Fish that can help manage iron-deficient anemia.Image credit: LIFEintern - Own work‚ CC BY-SA 4.0‚ via Wikimedia CommonsVitamin A deficiency is a killer among young children‚ known to cause blindness in those who survive. Golden rice set out to save millions of children’s lives each year by supplementing their diets with beta carotene‚ which can be converted to vitamin A in the body‚ but the rice was never rolled out due to “overly restrictive regulatory conditions‚” as described by Ed Regis‚ author of Golden Rice: The Imperiled Birth Of A GMO Superfood.Lucky Iron Fish saw more luck‚ rolling out a product intended to tackle iron deficiencies. A fish-shaped cast iron ingot‚ it can be boiled in water or used in cooking to provide a boost among communities with widespread iron-deficiency anemia. The role of supplementation is clearer in contexts where deficiencies are widespread and significant‚ but what about the daily doses for those who should have access to balanced nutrition?Do vitamins work?To understand if vitamin supplements work‚ we first have to consider what their role is.“I wish people knew that the role of dietary supplements is to help us to reach the optimal intakes for vitamins‚ minerals‚ and omega-3 fats‚” continued Ruxton. “Dietary supplements are not medicines and don’t prevent or treat illnesses‚ but they are still an important tool in our armory for keeping ourselves healthier from infanthood to old age.”A study in the American Journal Of Clinical Nutrition dove into whether or not daily vitamin supplementation could contribute to better brain health into old age‚ improving memory and slowing cognitive aging in older adults. By giving one group a multivitamin supplement while the other received a placebo‚ they saw a small improvement in the supplementation group. The daily multivitamin supplement seemed to benefit memory and overall brain function‚ being roughly equivalent to slowing down the aging of the brain by about two years. As Ruxton suggests‚ vitamins are unlikely to be a silver bullet for any pressing medical concerns‚ but they may help us make marginal gains toward living a healthier life for longer. Other lifestyle factors‚ such as how much sun we're getting‚ can affect vitamin deficiencies.Image credit: FotoHelin / Shutterstock.comA second study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition looked at the role of specific vitamins in stroke prevention. It gathered data on 14 studies in which participants were taking vitamin B supplements‚ and discovered that they had around a 34 percent reduction effect on stroke risk in areas where there was either no (or barely any) folic acid being added to foods. When they looked at places where folic acid was commonplace‚ they saw little in the way of benefits. It adds weight to the idea that vitamin supplements may act as a stepping stone to better health outcomes when our diets are lacking in some way‚ but simply plugging the gap won’t work for everything – especially without factoring in other lifestyle changes. Furthermore‚ vitamins are often branded as a fast track to recovering from illness‚ but a study published in Clinical Nutrition ESPEN failed to find a strong link between vitamin consumption and markers that might indicate a super-charged immune system. So‚ not a silver bullet‚ but expensive urine? It’s a little more complicated than that. The content of this article is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice‚ diagnosis‚ or treatment. Asteroid Apophis will not collide with Earth in 2029

Scientists have reconsidered the likelihood of Apophis colliding with Earth in 2029. Twenty years ago‚ when the asteroid Apophis was discovered‚ many were horrified. Named after the Egyptian god of chaos‚ this celestial monster with a diameter of 340 meters had a 2.7% chance of colliding with Earth in 2029. But‚ fortunately‚ further observations have reduced this probability to 1 in 100‚000. Apophis is expected to rush past our planet on April 13‚ 2029 at a distance of 37‚399 kilometers. However‚ one disturbing possibility remained: what if Apophis collided with another space rock and changed its course‚ heading towards Earth? To allay these concerns‚ astronomers Paul Wiegert and Benjamin Hiatt conducted a thorough study. They analyzed the trajectories of 1.3 million known asteroids and found that there was no chance that Apophis could be redirected to Earth. “Fortunately‚ no such collisions are anticipated‚” study lead author Paul Wiegert‚ an astronomer at the University of Western Ontario in Canada‚ said in a statement. “Even now that we know it’s on course to miss us by a safe margin‚ astronomers remain vigilant. It’s the asteroid we just can’t stop watching.” Apophis no longer poses a threat to Earth‚ and we can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that we are not at risk of an asteroid impact in 2029. On Fox Business‚ Charles Payne RIPS Biden’s Arrogant State of the Union Claims

Fox Business host Charles Payne fired back at President Joe Biden for squandering America’s dominance on the global stage and then pontificating about his squalid economic record during the State of the Union address.  During the March 8 edition of Making Money with Charles Payne‚ Payne went after Biden for claiming on Thursday he had made the American economy the “envy of the world.” However‚ Payne said Biden threatens America's status by pursuing policies that degrade a century of America’s dominance abroad. “[The American economy has] been the envy of the world for a long time and it will be for a long time if we don’t self-destruct. We can be on top for a while‚” the Fox Business host warned. “President Biden himself is pushing an agenda that is the template for those that are envying America. Again‚ open borders‚ massive welfare‚ sky-high taxes.” Payne also laid out that Biden’s record and imminent economic plans were not the cause of America’s place in the world‚ but a potentially fatal threat to longstanding dominance. “It will not be an accident if America slips from her perch‚” he added. Payne pointed out that to remain “the envy of the world” America should stick to the plan that brought her to that point. Payne asked his viewers to consider what things had made America the “most prosperous nation.”  Payne discussed how the American Dream provides both an opportunity for the individual and a space for massive economic growth. Payne said‚ “All these entrepreneurs know they can take a risk because taxes are low. Now‚ of course‚ there’s a notion of people being able to keep a big portion of what they own‚ even if it is billions of dollars and with that sort of impetus‚ you get the innovation that really is an American thing. And that’s what‚ by the way‚ is powering the stock market. We’ve talked about it day after day‚ the AI miracle. So there’s a freedom and excitement that comes with prosperity.”  By contrast‚ Biden has called for higher taxes if he wins the 2024 election. Biden’s party has also stifled innovation in much-touted legislation‚ loading down the CHIPS Act to produce semiconductors in the United States with politically motivated requirements.  Americans have bigger problems and Biden didn’t mention them during his State of the Union address.  Biden has presided over rampant inflation that has harmed Americans. In a Super Bowl ad and again at the State of the Union‚ Biden has focused on critiquing the practices of shrinking packages to hide higher prices.  The Biden administration oversaw an average of 5.7% inflation from February 2021 through January 2024‚ a drastically higher average than Americans experienced under former President Donald Trump. Beyond this‚ Americans have faced higher mortgage rates‚ declining real wages and higher gas prices since Biden took power.  These trends are great for curing any envy that has thus far survived the Biden Administration.  Conservatives are under attack! Contact ABC News at (818) 460-7477‚ CBS News at (212) 975-3247 and NBC News at (212) 664-6192 and demand they tell the truth about the Bidenomics disaster.

Stewart Asks If The Constitution 'Got Us Into This Mess'

Jon Stewart welcomed Harvard Prof. Steven Levitsky to Comedy Central and Monday’s edition of The Daily Show to promote his new book‚ Tyranny of the Minority‚ where he wondered if the Constitution is to blame for the “mess” the country finds itself in. Stewart began‚ “The Constitution is really our‚ you know‚ touchstone. Is that the document that actually got us into this mess?” By “mess‚” the duo meant that Donald Trump won in 2016 and may win again‚ as Levitsky explained‚ “The Constitution‚ as you say‚ is a brilliant document... It is the world's oldest written constitution. It’s done us a lot of good‚ but it is also part of the problem today. We‚ a majority of Americans‚ support democracy. A majority of Americans support the really interesting experiment with multiracial democracy that we are evolving into in the 21st century. A majority of Americans every day since Donald Trump came down the golden escalator have opposed Trump.”     Levitsky added that “we have a Constitution that protects‚ that enables‚ and that empowers an authoritarian minority party‚ and that’s a problem.” Stewart followed up with a discussion of the nature of the Constitution‚ “But isn't that the very nature of the Constitution‚ it was a balance between that ideal and the practicalities of‚ well‚ how do we let the southern states‚ who have less population‚ not to be steamrolled by a pure democracy?” The reference to southern states is a subtle attempt by Stewart to portray various aspects of the Constitution as being created for the defense of slavery and racism‚ but‚ at the time‚ Virginia was a large state and the namesake behind a more purely democratic proposal. For his part‚ Levitsky declared that “First of all‚ it was a document created by people who feared democracy‚ who feared majority rule. Because majority rule didn't exist in the world in the 18th century.” Stewart then wondered‚ “What did they think‚ if it wasn't kings‚ what did they think it was going to be?” Shifting to the Electoral College‚ Levitsky replied‚ “They didn't know. They were in completely new terrain. They had never been in a republic like this before. We had never had an elected leader before. The Electoral College was a third choice. They were scrambling‚ right? They couldn't reach a majority and they didn't know how to elect a president. So the Electoral College was an improvisation‚ an experiment.” Still stuck on the idea that every part of the Constitution was designed to appease the South‚ Stewart asked‚ “Was it an improvisation to bring a compromise to the southern states? Is that—” As Stewart was pondering the Electoral College‚ Levitsky jumped in‚ “Southern states and smaller states.” During the segment‚ neither Stewart nor Levitsky ever offered any reassurances that in their attempts to solve the alleged problem of the tyranny of the minority‚ they would not simply replace it with the tyranny of the majority‚ which the Electoral College currently provides some defense against. Here is a transcript for the March 11 show: Comedy Central The Daily Show 3/11/2024 11:21 PM ET JON STEWART: So how-- when you-- tell me about how we got into the mess. The Constitution is really our‚ you know‚ touchstone. Is that the document that actually got us into this mess?  STEVEN LEVITSKY: The Constitution‚ as you say‚ is a brilliant document‚ is the world’s oldest— STEWART: Don't hedge‚ sir.  LEVITSKY: It is the world's oldest written Constitution. It’s done us a lot of good.  STEWART: Yes.  LEVITSKY: But it is also part of the problem today. We‚ a majority of Americans‚ support democracy. A majority of Americans support the really interesting experiment with multiracial democracy that we are evolving into in the 21st century. A majority of Americans every day since Donald Trump came down the golden escalator have opposed Trump.  But we have a Constitution that protects‚ that enables‚ and that empowers an authoritarian minority party‚ and that’s a problem.  STEWART: But isn't that the very nature of the Constitution‚ it was a balance between that ideal and the practicalities of‚ well‚ how do we let the southern states‚ who have less population‚ not to be steamrolled by a pure democracy?  LEVITSKY: Right. It was a couple things. First of all‚ it was a document created by people who feared democracy‚ who feared majority rule. Because majority rule didn't exist in the world in the 18th century.  STEWART: What did they think‚ if it wasn't kings‚ what did they think it was going to be?  LEVITSKY: They didn't know. They were in completely new terrain. They had never been in a republic like this before. We had never had an elected leader before. The Electoral College was a third choice. They were scrambling‚ right? They couldn't reach a majority and they didn't know how to elect a president. So the Electoral College was an improvisation‚ an experiment.  STEWART: Was it an improvisation to bring a compromise to the southern states? Is that— LEVITSKY: Southern states and smaller states.  STEWART: -- Because the north was more industrialized than the south. And the smaller states.

Was the Super Tuesday Facebook blackout a trial run?

Was the Super Tuesday Facebook blackout a trial run?

It's beyond coincidental that on Super Tuesday‚ when a third of the United States held a presidential primary‚ two of the world’s largest and most influential social media platforms went down. Facebook and Instagram motivate and sway voters. When taken in conjunction with Meta’s recent ban on “political posts‚” it’s hard to believe last week’s hours-long outage was not a trial run for November. With its nearly unlimited reach‚ social media has become the most important platform for politicians to advance their messages. Presidential election years are by far the most important — and most lucrative — for social media companies. Hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake. And that’s just for the political ads. The last two presidential elections were shot through with fraud. The 2024 election year may be the worst yet. But ads are not where the money blitz begins and ends. Think of all the news shows‚ podcasts‚ and influencer posts‚ and the increase in content views due to peaked user interest during an election year. Now‚ think of the ads inserted in videos and on influencers' pages. The revenues can easily reach the billions‚ depending on the platform. Now‚ here’s the trouble. In recent years‚ we’ve learned how Facebook and Twitter (now X) actively engaged in election interference and censorship. In fact‚ censorship is the mark for election interference‚ and we’ve seen this for a decade as conservative voices have been “shadowbanned” or throttled. Election years are when the censorship goes into overdrive. We’ve seen the Twitter Files‚ which exposed how the company worked hand-in-glove with federal authorities‚ including the FBI and CDC‚ to suppress disfavored views. We’ve seen the bans of only prominent‚ conservative handles for posts that “go against standards.” We've seen even the smallest accounts get banned for posting opinions that ran afoul of the platform narrative. We've seen and heard in congressional testimony that Facebook’s “fact checkers” are simply opinion checkers and have free rein to flag any posts they see fit. We saw Facebook and Twitter suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story that broke right before the 2020 election and most certainly would have undermined Joe Biden's chances of winning a free and fair election. All of these are classic forms of election interference. Recently‚ Meta‚ which includes Facebook‚ Instagram‚ and Threads‚ issued a ban on “political content.” This is truly puzzling as the company did not clearly define what “political content” is‚ or whether the ban extends to political advertising. As head of a publicly traded company‚ Mark Zuckerberg has a fiduciary responsibility to do the best he can for his shareholders. Surely then‚ he would not turn down hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue for political ads would he? Whose interest would that serve‚ if not Meta’s shareholders? Election years offer alternative social media platforms the chance to exploit earning possibilities. Some better than others. In a move sure to alienate users‚ Gab‚ which is popular among some conservatives for its unfettered speech‚ went to a paid model without much warning. Many users logged in one day to learn they would need to pay $9.99 a month for the privilege of posting any picture‚ meme‚ graphic‚ or video. Businesses would pay more — from $99.99 up to $499.99 a month. Whether it is desperation or trying to capitalize on the election year‚ the move is a risky and potentially fatal one for Gab. As the cliché goes‚ this is the most important election of our lifetimes. The last two presidential elections were shot through with fraud. The 2024 election year may be the worst yet‚ and it’s all being advanced by corporate media‚ politicians‚ and Big Tech. The left has never been more desperate and will do anything to thwart Donald Trump from retaking office. Big Tech social media is the left's number one weapon and biggest asset in their arsenal of fraud. Democracy is undermined and attacked when Americans’ First Amendment rights are suppressed. You are under attack. Every thought Americans have can be affected and opinions swayed to match the Big Tech social media narrative. This is why I founded Wimkin Social Media‚ a true alternative to Facebook with nearly all the same features‚ that provides true freedom of speech. We’ve beaten app store bans‚ cancellations by banks‚ infrastructure providers‚ and mainstream media attacks. Even the House Select Committee on January 6 tried and failed to shut us down. I hope you will join me and our millions of patriots there who understand that every moment spent on Big Tech social media is a moment your freedoms are under attack. Together‚ through awareness and truth‚ we can take our country back.

Boeing whistleblower found dead of a gunshot wound; didn't finish testimony against the company

John Barnett‚ 62‚ worked for Boeing for 32 years. Prior to his retirement in 2017‚ he worked on the 787 Dreamliner as a quality manager at the Boeing factory in North Charleston‚ South Carolina. Barnett recently became involved in a whistleblower lawsuit against Boeing‚ blasting the company for allegedly retaliating against him for detailing possible safety issues at the aerospace and defense corporation's factories. He was poised last week to continue with his pretrial deposition but never showed up. Barnett was found dead Saturday in his truck outside his South Carolina hotel‚ reported the BBC. The Charleston County Coroner told the BBC that the Boeing whistleblower died from a "self-inflicted" wound and that police were investigating. Barnett's attorney‚ Brian Knowles‚ told the Corporate Crime Reporter that his client "was supposed to do day three of his deposition here in Charleston on his AIR21 case." "Today is a tragic day‚" wrote Knowles. "John had been back and forth for quite some time getting prepared. The defense examined him for their allowed seven hours under the rules on Thursday. I cross examined him all day yesterday (Friday) and did not finish. We agreed to continue this morning at 10 a.m. (co-counsel) Rob (Turkewitz) kept calling this morning and his (Barnett's) phone would go to voicemail." Knowles indicated that after multiple failed attempts to hail Barnett‚ they asked the hotel to check on him. "They found him in his truck dead from an 'alleged' self-inflicted gunshot‚" said Knowles. According to Barnett's lawsuit‚ workers were using "sub-standard" parts on Boeing 787 aircraft and leadership was glossing over malfunctions to save money‚ reported the Daily Mail. Barnett told the BBC in 2019 that up to 25% of oxygen systems on the 787 Dreamliner could be faulty and fail to work when needed. He also suggested that faulty parts were intentionally installed on planes at a Boeing factory and alleged that in at least one instance plane parts were sourced from scrap bins. "As a quality manager at Boeing‚ you're the last line of defense before a defect makes it out to the flying public‚" the whistleblower told the New York Times in 2019. "And I haven't seen a plane out of Charleston yet that I'd put my name on saying it's safe and airworthy." While the company denied the allegations‚ some of Barnett's concerns were reportedly substantiated by a 2017 Federal Aviation Administration review. Barnett remained critical of Boeing in recent years‚ especially as various malfunctions and production concerns made headlines. For instance‚ when pressed about the Jan. 5 incident where the door plug of a commercial Boeing 737 Max 9 came off as the plane was ascending‚ Barnett told TMZ‚ "This is not a 737 problem‚ this is a Boeing problem." "I know the FAA has gone in and done due diligence and inspections to ensure that the door plugs on the 737 are installed properly and the fasteners are installed properly‚ but my concern is ... what is the condition of the rest of the airplane?" said Barnett. RIP John Barnett $BA — (@) Boeing said in a statement‚ "We are saddened by Mr. Barnett's passing‚ and our thoughts are with his family and friends." Like Blaze News? Levin: Exposing Biden's historical lies

Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech‚ which Mark Levin calls a “state of confusion” speech‚ was inflammatory at its best and full of lies at its worst. The president used his speech to pretend to be the greatest ally of marginalized communities with only good intentions for Americans‚ unlike his predecessor Donald Trump‚ whom he relentlessly attacked. “Joe Biden wants you to believe that he went to see Nelson Mandela and he went to jail; he’s a liar. Joe Biden wants you to believe he was a civil rights activist; he’s a liar‚” Levin says. And this is proven by his well-documented past. At the height of the civil rights movement in the early '70s‚ Biden joined the United States Senate and befriended John Stennis‚ James Eastland‚ Herman Talmadge‚ and Robert Byrd. “All four of whom were racist segregationists. All four of whom filibustered the 1964 and 1965 Civil Rights Acts‚” Levin explains‚ adding‚ “and Joe Biden wasn’t just their friend. Joe Biden sponsored legislation to end the integration of our public schools.” Biden has also come under fire for a comment he made about not wanting to send his kid into the “jungle” as he advocated for ending the integration of public schools. “He’s made racist‚ bigoted‚ segregated comments ever since right up to his election‚” Levin says. In 1994‚ Biden was the sponsor of a new crime law that focused more on crack than cocaine. Civil rights groups who represented the black community believed he was purposely targeting them. “More black people as a proportion of the population went to prison as a result of Joe Biden’s law‚” Levin says. And now‚ Biden is “doing his dark‚ petty‚ Castro-like speech filled with lies‚ propaganda‚ delivered in a snarky‚ sarcastic‚ and angry way.” “America‚ we deserve better than this‚” Levin says. Kidnapped New York baby found alive at electrical plant passes away at hospital‚ mother charged

An 11-month-old baby who was reportedly kidnapped in upstate New York and subsequently found alive in a shed at an electrical plant campus passed away at the hospital‚ according to Fox News Digital. The Schenectady Police Department issued an Amber Alert on Sunday around 10:00 a.m. for Halo Branton‚ noting that the baby was last seen at 12th Street at Campbell Avenue at around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday. The child was reported missing from her home in the Bellevue neighborhood at around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday‚ according to Ryan Macherone‚ a Schenectady police officer. Officers soon showed up at the residence and began searching for the child.Less than a day after the authorities launched a search for Halo‚ they reportedly discovered her on a General Electric campus. She was found alive‚ but she ultimately passed away while at the hospital. Persia Nelson‚ 24‚ was charged with second-degree manslaughter. Prosecutors in the case also plan to file a new charge of depraved indifference murder. The authorities ultimately found Nelson on the campus when security discovered her in a heated building. When she was questioned about why she was there‚ she said she could not remember how she got there and that she had lost her child‚ according to WNYT. Schenectady Police Chief Eric Clifford said: "It took some time‚ but officers were able to connect an address on Campbell Avenue to the female‚ and this ultimately led officers to the dead end of 12th Street‚ where they were able to identify where the female went with her baby in a location where she entered the GE campus."Reports stated that Nelson dropped Halo down an eight-foot-deep pipe access area at the electrical plant. When the authorities found the 11-month-old‚ they identified water and mud at the base of the tunnel structure where she was found. This is what authorities believe ultimately led to the child's death.Halo was quickly taken to Ellis Hospital to be treated‚ but she was pronounced dead at 1:24 p.m. An autopsy suggested that the child had died from exposure and hypothermia‚ according to investigators. Clifford said: "Everybody can relate to a 1-year-old child being helpless. At the time‚ the adrenaline's rushing‚ you know‚ we're motivated to find her‚ but‚ you know‚ after the reality sets in‚ it's definitely taking a toll on everybody."A judge set Nelson's bail at $500‚000.It is unclear how much time Nelson could spend behind bars if she is found guilty of the charges.Like Blaze News?
