Klepper: Hegseth's Obsession With Merit Is 'Damning' Because He's a TV Host

Klepper: Hegseth's Obsession With Merit Is 'Damning' Because He's a TV Host

Comedy Central’s host of the week of The Daily Show, Jordan Klepper, unleashed two clunkers on Tuesday as he reacted to Secretary of Defense-designate Pete Hegseth’s Senate confirmation hearing. First, Klepper chopped off one of Hegseth’s answers mid-sentence to falsely claim Hegseth has flip-flopped and gone woke on women in combat. Second, Klepper claimed that Hegseth’s obsession with meritocracy is “damning” because Hegseth himself is just a TV host. Klepper introduced a clip of Hegseth and GOP Sen. Joni Ernst by sarcastically observing, “Maybe he's not good at leadership, or management, or money, or vows, or driving home past 10:00 a.m., but the one thing he does is stand his ground. Tell 'em, Pete, no women in combat roles.”     In the clip, Ernst asked, “Let's make it very clear for everyone here today. As Secretary of Defense, will you support women continuing to have the opportunity to serve in combat roles?” as Hegseth answered, “Yes, women will have access to ground combat roles.” Klepper responded, “From Washington D.C., the flash, apparently official, at 11:25 standard time, Pete Hegseth went woke.” Here is Hegseth’s full answer: “Yes, women will have access to ground combat roles, combat roles given the standards remain high.” Contrary to media reports that he’s having a confirmation conversion, that has always been Hegseth’s position. In the same podcast interview that is cited as evidence that Hegseth is softening his original position to win votes, he said, “I'm okay with the idea that you maintain the standards where they are for everybody. And if there's some, you know, hard-charging female that meets that standard, great, cool, join the infantry battalion. But that is not what's happened.” As for Klepper, he moved on to other portions of the hearing, “You know, perhaps the most damning comment about Pete Hegseth came from Pete Hegseth himself when he was explaining what the military needs in its leadership.” That led to a montage where Hegseth frequently used the word “meritocracy” to describe his vision for the Pentagon, “The DEI policies of today are not [jump cut] putting meritocracy first. [jump cut] Every single senior officer will be reviewed based on meritocracy. [jump cut] Getting anything that doesn't contribute to meritocracy out of how decisions are made inside the Pentagon. [jump cut] Ensuring readiness and meritocracy is front and center. Meritocracy. [jump cut] Meritocracy. [jump cut] Meritocracy.” Klepper was not a fan, “Oh! I know what his next kid's going to be named. You heard him, though. You heard him, folks. A military cannot function unless it's staffed by a system based on pure merit, where only the most qualified people rise to the top. So says your next Secretary of Defense, who will run the most complicated, powerful, deadly organization the world has ever known, and whose only qualification is that Trump liked watching him sit on a couch on Saturday mornings.” Of course, Hegseth isn’t just a TV host. The man has been mulling over defense issues for years, both as someone who served and as a veterans’ advocate, and after years of policy failures and liberal culture warring, Republicans felt the time was right for an outsider. Here is a transcript for the January 14 show: Comedy Central The Daily Show 1/14/2025 11:08 PM ET JORDAN KLEPPER: Maybe he's not good at leadership, or management, or money, or vows, or driving home past 10:00 a.m., but the one thing he does is stand his ground. Tell 'em, Pete, no women in combat roles. JONI ERNST: Let's make it very clear for everyone here today. As Secretary of Defense, will you support women continuing to have the opportunity to serve in combat roles? PETE HEGSETH: Yes, women will have access to ground combat roles. JORDAN KLEPPER: From Washington D.C., the flash, apparently official, at 11:25 standard time, Pete Hegseth went woke. You know, perhaps the most damning comment about Pete Hegseth came from Pete Hegseth himself when he was explaining what the military needs in its leadership. HEGSETH: The DEI policies of today are not [jump cut] putting meritocracy first. [jump cut] Meritocracy. KLEPPER: Oh! I know what his next kid's going to be named. You heard him, though. You heard him, folks. A military cannot function unless it's staffed by a system based on pure merit, where only the most qualified people rise to the top. So says your next Secretary of Defense, who will run the most complicated, powerful, deadly organization the world has ever known, and whose only qualification is that Trump liked watching him sit on a couch on Saturday mornings. But listening to Republicans today, it seems like that's going to be enough to get him confirmed. ERIC SCHMITT: I just want to say, for all the talk of experience and not coming from the same cocktail parties that permanent Washington is used to, you are a breath of fresh air. KLEPPER: Well, that's not what the breathalyzer said, but okay.

Renowned brain imaging specialist condemns mental health care as 'only medical specialty that never looks at the organ it treats'

If you went to the cardiologist complaining of chest pain, chances are your doctor will order a cardiac CT scan. If you went to the orthopedic surgeon after rolling your ankle, you’ll probably be in the X-ray room within minutes of your arrival. Chronic headaches? CAT scan. Knee trouble? MRI. Pregnancy complications? Ultrasound. In nearly every medical scenario, doctors insist on knowing what’s going on inside the body. Why then when we go to the psychiatrist complaining of negative thoughts, overwhelming anxiety, or unexplainable sadness, are we immediately prescribed pills and sent home? That’s the question that’s long plagued author, psychiatrist, and brain disorder specialist Dr. Daniel Amen, founder of Amen Clinics — a nationally recognized health care clinic that targets the root of mental illness. The Robertson brothers recently interviewed Dr. Amen about his unique and more holistic approach to mental health. What he reveals about mainstream mental health care is quite shocking. When Dr. Amen was just 18 years old, he became an infantry medic in the Vietnam War. But he “didn’t like being shot at,” so he transitioned to serve as an X-ray technician, during which time his “passion for medical imaging” was born. “I fell in love with the only medical specialty that never looks at the organ it treats,” he tells Jase and Al. Amen clinics have sought to change that with the use of what’s called “brain SPECT imaging,” a scan that “looks at blood flow and activity” as well as “how your brain works.” What Dr. Amen has learned over his years in the field is that so many mental health issues are misdiagnosed to the detriment of the patient. For example, he remembers one of his first patients who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease after nearly burning her house down from leaving the stove on. When he scanned her brain, however, he found that "she didn't have Alzheimer's." He put her on a different treatment plan to target the real issue, and she "got her memory back." “In the United States (really all around the world), almost all psychiatric illnesses — anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia — they're made based on symptom cluster diagnoses,” says Dr. Amen. “You go to your family practice doctor ... your psychiatrist, or psychiatric nurse practitioner, you tell them what you're experiencing or your family does, and they go, ‘Oh, you have this or you have that’ with no biological data,” he says, calling it “insane.” “Depression can come from low thyroid,” “[living] in a mold-filled environment,” or even in the aftermath of COVID, which Dr. Amen calls “an inflammatory bomb that goes off in your emotional brain.” Further, “mild traumatic brain injury ruins people's lives, and nobody knows because nobody looks,” he adds. When treating various mental health conditions, Dr. Amen isn’t opposed to medications, but it’s never the first or the only thing he considers. “If I really think you have bipolar disorder, well then I'm going to give you lithium or [lamotrigine], but I'm also going to work hard to get your brain healthy,” he says. To hear more of Dr. Amen’s groundbreaking discoveries about the brain and how it works, watch the episode above. Venezuelan dictator Maduro threatens invasion of US territory — governor calls for Trump's swift action

Venezuelan socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro on Saturday proposed invading Puerto Rico, prompting the U.S. territory's Republican governor, Jenniffer González-Colón, to call for swift action from President-elect Donald Trump's incoming administration.During Venezuela's International Anti-Fascist Festival in Caracas over the weekend, Maduro said, "Just as in the north they have a colonization agenda, we have a liberation agenda."'Will not bow down to the threats of petty, murderous dictators.'He stated that the country's agenda was created by Simón Bolívar, the 19th-century Venezuelan who led the South American independence movement."The freedom of Puerto Rico is pending, and we will achieve it with Brazilian troops," Maduro declared.González-Colón addressed Maduro's remarks in a Monday letter to Trump, urging the incoming administration to respond to the dictator's threat to invade Puerto Rico. "This is an open threat to the United States, our national security, and stability in the region," the governor wrote. "I trust your incoming administration will swiftly respond and make clear to the Maduro regime that, under your leadership, the United States will protect American lives and sovereignty and will not bow down to the threats of petty, murderous dictators." "As Governor of Puerto Rico, I am ready to work with you and your administration to counter this and other threats posed by the illegitimate Maduro dictatorship and support the people of Venezuela in their quest for freedom," she continued. "I also look forward to engaging in meaningful discussions on how to best enhance Puerto Rico's national security role and take a strong stance against the growing presence of our adversaries in the region."Representative Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) commended González-Colón for "condemning the absurd and pathetic threats.""With Biden in the White House, adversaries such as those within the Maduro narco-dictatorship have been emboldened by his weak policy of appeasement," Diaz-Balart wrote in a post on X. "But in less than a week, a new foreign policy will begin where freedom and U.S. national security interests are paramount. Friends will be treated as friends, and adversaries as adversaries."Diaz-Balart warned Maduro that if he does not flee Venezuela, he could meet the same fate as former dictators Benito Mussolini of Italy and Muammar Gaddafi of Libya, who were executed after being overthrown."Maduro's days are numbered. If the dictator in Venezuela does not want to end up like other dictators Mussolini and Gaddafi, he should leave Venezuela without delay," he wrote.Representative Carlos Giménez (R-Fla.) stated that Maduro “must face DIRE consequences for his actions.”“The people of #PuertoRico are proud American citizens & we will NEVER tolerate these pathetic aggressions from a murderous thug!” he added.Trump's transition team did not respond to a request for comment from the New York Post.Like Blaze News?
