Zach Top On TikTok Fame Hurting Artists In The Long Run: “Get A Record Deal But They’ve Never Played For 20 People Before”

The age-old battle of whether TikTok fame equates to real-life success. Becoming a popular artist today is a much different landscape than it was 10 years ago. The rise in social media use makes smaller artists much more discoverable and allows you to share your music with a much wider audience. While those are some pros of social media with music, there are also some cons. You are not touring or spending time shaking hands with those who support your music and come to shows, and in some cases, you have record deals being offered to artists who have yet to even sing in front of a live audience. And don't even get us started on record labels using social media as a leverage point for artists to release songs. These days, everyone is chasing that viral moment... Because of this, artists always discuss the pros and cons of finding fame through a viral moment. Zach Top, arguably one of the hottest names in country music right now, has an interesting take on this. Last year, Top had a massive hit, "I Never Lie," which went viral on TikTok after its release, but Top had been working in the music space for years before that viral moment. Zach Top started performing with his siblings at age seven, playing guitar in their family bluegrass band. The group had a long run of performing as a band, and in the end, Top knew that this was his calling. Top reflects on his musical upbringing and how he thinks it shaped the rest of his career when chatting with Dale Brisby for the Rodeo Time Podcast. https://www.instagram.com/p/DE3gtnQpSRL/ "Yeah, we ran around 10 years. Luckily, I didn't ruin any relationships with my siblings 'cause I remember having... we had some brutal band practices. I was definitely the one that wanted it really bad, and I'd sit down there and play guitar three hours a day and then try and get them to, you know, do a little band practice for whatever show we had coming up or something. I was definitely an unpleasant little tyrant a lot of times, I'll say." Top knows more than anyone wanting so badly to have that big break. Still, he also thinks that if you don't get out on the road and workshop your music, relying on a viral moment or a viral hit is not the way to be set up for a fruitful and long career in the music industry. "Especially in this age of, you know, people going viral on TikTok, and if it goes big enough, they get a record deal out of it. But they've never played in front of 20 people before. It was just a 15-second video, you know, and that's not the case for all of them. But a lot of times, you see that, and I feel like they get to skip a lot of steps on the front end. That ends up probably hurting them later on and maybe damages the longevity of the career." When Top looks back on his early days on stage, he recognizes that they weren't perfect, but he's so thankful that he had so much stage time in his youth because it taught him how to become a true entertainer. Many people out there have incredible voices. However, a good voice does not equate to getting folks to buy tickets to shows, buy records, or become loyal fans. You must entertain a crowd while on stage to make those things happen. "I think I was lucky to get the opportunity to not just practice singing and playing for a long, long time, but yeah, be on stage in front of people, be behind a microphone, learn how to keep people entertained or engaged for 45 minutes or an hour, an hour and a half or however long it was. You know, we played bar gigs (that were) three or four hours or something. There's a lot more to the art of being a performer just than playing and singing good, and so I feel like I got a pretty advantageous little head start, starting as a kid just learning real quick." Top recalled his mother used to write "scripts" his family bluegrass band of stories to tell between songs or jokes to crack if the audience felt dry. That's a massive component of being a phenomenal artist. Or, if you're like Chris Stapleton, you don't have to say much because your guitar playing and singing make up for it... but he's in a league of his own. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on this matter, but Top does make some great points about the benefits of being a road dog. This lifestyle isn't for everyone, and if you have a voice and can survive away from family chasing dotted interstate lines, you'll make it. But if you don't have the grit for that lifestyle, the music industry will chew you up and spit you out. Check it out; Top begins talking about this around the 15-minute mark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsfHGAtbgqk

Koe Wetzel Takes Inspiration From Tracy Lawrence For Tour Prank, Unleashes Crickets On Kolby Cooper’s Tour Bus

A good tour prank never goes out of style. I am here for a funny tour prank, like Zach Top pranking Lainey Wilson by coming out on stage dressed as Kermit the Frog. Or Megan Moroney riding out on a tractor dressed as the leader of No Shoes Nation to round out her tour with Kenny Chesney. However, the pranks that occur on tour that are not seen from the stage are even better. There is only so much that can be done on stage, so the tour pranks that take place off stage are much more extreme and also highlight the level of how close artists are with each other based on how hard they f**k with each other. Koe Wetzel and his camp are rowdy, so it's no surprise that he and his band pulled an epic prank on his fellow East Texas brother, Kolby Cooper. During the Damn Near Normal Tour, Kolby Cooper joined Koe Wetzel for some dates, and sadly for him, he was the victim of Koe bringing back tour pranks. Koe doesn't do much in life, so it's no surprise he went all out on this prank. He was inspired by Tracy Lawrence, who told him a story about pranking Tracy Byrd during their TL's Road House Podcast episode together. "I got the code to his bus, and I sent my guys to every bait store in town, and we got over 1,000 crickets. I strode crickets from back to front, all over that bus. Those sons of b*tches were everywhere."  Lawrence told Wetzel during their conversation. While Koe couldn't find 1,000 crickets, he did find 150 and spent a thousand dollars on packing peanuts to pull off a Tracy Lawrence-inspired prank. "Kolby, we're sorry. We love you." In the background of Koe's apology before executing the prank, his guitar player, Odis Parrish, hilariously says he's not sorry. "They're not sorry, but I'm sorry. We appreciate you being on tour, buddy." With that, Koe and his crew got to work while Kolby was on stage for his opening set. After unleashing chaos on their bus, they bumped into Kooper after his set as Koe and his band were walking backstage to make their call time. As they passed each other, they were all hugging each other and thanking one another for being on coming on the tour and thanking Koe for having them on the tour. But they have no idea what waits for them behind that bus door... When Cooper and his band get back to the bus, they are met with quite the surprise. The guys are in shock about the packing peanuts, and I'm not even sure if they realized there were live crickets let loose in the bus, too, but they are heartbroken to see a painting of a tiger they bought in St. Louis is missing from the kitchen/dining area of the bus. After assessing the damage, Cooper looks at the camera to give one final reaction. "Well...thanks." Given Cooper is a dad to three young ones, this is probably light work for him. I also get the impression that it takes a lot to get under Cooper's skin, and he's all around a chill dude, so I am sure he thought this was well executed and appreciated the planning that went into this versus being mad. Koe better watch his back on the next tour, though.... you know what they say, "Karma's a b*tch." @koe_wetzel Prank wars feat. @Kolby Cooper ♬ original sound - Koe Wetzel

Trump Can Fix the Border on Day 1

Politics Trump Can Fix the Border on Day 1 Sen. Rand Paul: The president-elect must act on his mandate to fix Biden’s artificial border crisis. (Photo by Qian Weizhong/VCG via Getty Images) Over the last four years, we have witnessed an unprecedented erosion of security at our borders. This deterioration was marked by a complete disregard for the laws that were put in place to protect U.S. citizens. Since the start of the Biden-Harris administration, nearly 11 million individuals have been encountered attempting to illegally enter the United States.  In his first year in office, President Biden repealed over 80 of President Trump’s policies that had effectively secured the southwest border. What was once a controlled and secure boundary quickly turned into a revolving door.  These open-border policies allowed individuals—many with little to no documentation—to show up, state their name, and waltz right into our country. The Biden-Harris administration claims they check everyone against criminal databases, but they only do so against U.S. and allied nations’ records—leaving massive blind spots for criminals from countries that don’t share information or have reliable databases. Criminals and terrorist-linked individuals were able to slip into the country undetected, often disappearing without ever appearing at their court dates. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) apprehended nearly 400 suspected terrorists attempting to enter illegally between ports of entry, and another 1,587 at ports of entry. And these are just the ones they managed to catch—countless others have evaded detection. During these last few years, the laws that exist to protect this nation were bent, abused, or outright ignored. Parole, which is meant to be used sparingly, became a loophole, and asylum laws were distorted to justify an open-border agenda. Tragically, Laken Riley was brutally murdered because the Biden administration paroled her killer. No other family should ever have to endure the pain hers has. President Biden discarded proven strategies like “Remain in Mexico,” which was undeniably successful in deterring illegal entries. The results were immediate and disastrous. During the last full month of Trump administration, when “Remain in Mexico” was in effect, border encounters were under 74,000. After its repeal, that number surged to over 101,000 and continued to rise.  Under the Obama administration, their “standard” for what constitutes a crisis was 1,000 attempted crossings in a day. Under the Biden-Harris administration, there have been, on average, over 6,000 encounters daily at the Southwest border, yet they insisted there was no crisis. Their policies created a pull effect, enticing migrants to pay cartels thousands of dollars for a treacherous journey to the southwest border. The message over the last four years has been: if you show up, we will find a way to get you in. And who has benefited from that? The cartels, who profit from this human pipeline, and terrorist-linked individuals exploiting the chaos to slip in unnoticed. All the powers needed to address this crisis already exist under current law. The President has the authority to implement “Remain in Mexico,” and the Department of Homeland Security can immediately return migrants to a neighboring foreign territory. The President also holds broad powers to suspend or restrict entry for any group deemed detrimental to our national interest. Section 208 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) says the President and the Secretary of Homeland Security “may” grant asylum—not “shall” grant asylum. Section 208 allows President Trump to make anyone illegally entering the country ineligible for asylum. Additionally, under section 212, President Trump can stop the entry of illegal aliens altogether. Finally, section 235 authorizes him to immediately place illegal migrants back onto the Mexican side of the border.  The 2024 election was a clear mandate from the American people to reverse President Biden’s disastrous border policies. We must reinstate “Remain in Mexico” and use the other existing authorities to the full extent. That is why, immediately following this hearing, we will vote on affirming the president’s and the secretary of homeland security’s legal authority to secure the southwest border—including taking immediate steps to remove illegal aliens, reinstate “Remain in Mexico,” and end catch-and-release.  The Trump administration demonstrated that when the law is enforced properly, it works. This resolution reaffirms that President Trump—or any president—has the broad authority to resolve this ongoing crisis. I urge my colleagues to stand with us, uphold the rule of law, and restore order at our nation’s borders. The post Trump Can Fix the Border on Day 1 appeared first on The American Conservative.

The Washington Post’s New Mission: Reach ‘All of America’

After Donald J. Trump entered the White House in 2017, The Washington Post adopted a slogan that underscored the newspaper’s traditional role as a government watchdog: “Democracy Dies in Darkness.” This week, as Mr. Trump prepares to re-enter the White House, the newspaper debuted a mission statement that evokes a more expansive view of The Post’s journalism, without death or darkness: “Riveting Storytelling for All of America.” The statement is meant to be an internal rallying point for...

Fetterman’s approach to Trump stirs speculation

Sen. John Fetterman’s (D-Pa.) open-minded approach to President-elect Trump is fueling questions about his motives and vexing some of his fellow Democrats. In the wake of Trump’s victory in November, Fetterman has emerged as a critic of his own party’s messaging, while also signaling a willingness to entertain some of the incoming administration’s policy ideas. The Pennsylvania senator drew praise from Trump himself after the two men met last week. Fetterman had already become a...

In a Blow to National Security: Biden Removes Cuba from Terror List Despite Hamas, Hezbollah Ties

In a move that has alarmed national security experts and Republicans alike, outgoing President Joe Biden has removed Cuba from the U.S. State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism, despite the island nation’s well-documented ties to terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah. This decision, widely criticized as a dangerous concession, overlooks Cuba's continued support for terrorist groups, which threaten U.S. allies and interests in the Middle East and beyond. Biden’s move is...
