Top government health chief declares 'long COVID' doesn't really exist‚ study finds flu impairs more people in the long term

A new study has found that the post-viral effects of COVID-19 are no worse than other respiratory illnesses‚ such as the flu. The study's author – a top government health official in Australia's state of Queensland – declared that it is time to retire the "long COVID" term because it is harmful and misleading. Dr. John Gerrard is Queensland's Chief Health Officer‚ a leading infectious disease specialist‚ and previously was the Director of Infectious Diseases at the Gold Coast Hospital. Gerrard is also the lead author of a recent study that found the post-viral effects of COVID-19 to be equal to or even less severe than other respiratory illnesses. "We believe it is time to stop using terms like 'long Covid.' They wrongly imply there is something unique and exceptional about longer-term symptoms associated with this virus‚" Gerrard proclaimed. "This terminology can cause unnecessary fear‚ and in some cases‚ hypervigilance to longer symptoms that can impede recovery."The study examined 5‚112 adults who had symptoms of a respiratory illness and underwent PCR testing between May and June 2022. Of those individuals‚ 2‚399 tested positive for COVID-19‚ while 995 tested positive for influenza‚ and 1‚718 tested negative for both.A year after their PCR tests‚ the participants in the study were asked about ongoing symptoms. Of the respondents‚ 16% said they felt ongoing symptoms a year later‚ and 3.6% reported moderate-to-severe impairment. In fact‚ the people who were infected with the flu had a higher rate of impairments a year later‚ according to the study. According to the progressive outlet The Guardian‚ "The 3% of the study participants who had ongoing impairments after COVID-19 infection was similar to the 3.4% with ongoing impairments after influenza."The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported‚ "Dr. Gerrard said 94 percent of participants who reported the moderate to severe level of functional limitations experienced fatigue‚ post-exertion symptom exacerbation‚ brain fog and changes to taste and smell a year after their infection."Gerrard will present the study next month at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in Barcelona. "Our evidence suggests that there isn't‚ that it is not dissimilar to other viruses‚" Gerrard declared. "That does not mean that you can't get these persistent symptoms following COVID-19‚ but you're no more likely to get it after COVID than with other respiratory viruses."Gerrard emphasized‚ "But in the vast majority of people‚ recovery is the norm."Gerrard said during a Friday press conference‚ "I want to make it clear that the symptoms that some patients described after having COVID-19 are real‚ and we believe they are real. What we are saying is that the incidence of these symptoms is no greater in COVID-19 than it is with other respiratory viruses‚ and that to use this term 'long COVID' is misleading and I believe harmful."Like Blaze News? Federal authorities are investigating Meta for possible role in illicit drug sales on Facebook: Report

US prosecutors in Virginia are investigating Meta Platforms — the parent company of Facebook and Instagram — for potentially playing a role in facilitating illegal drug sales on their platforms‚ according to the New York Post. The report mentioned that the prosecutors have already issued subpoenas and started questioning Meta about whether it has enabled and profited from illicit drug sales on its platform. Prosecutors have also requested records related to "violative drug content on Meta's platforms and/or the illicit sale of drugs via Meta's platforms."The Food and Drug Administration is reportedly helping with the investigation‚ according to people familiar with the situation. However‚ investigations like this do not always end in formal charges of wrongdoing‚ but what has been brought up is enough for the prosecutors to take a serious look.A spokesperson for Meta said that [t]he sale of illicit drugs is against our policies and we work to find and remove this content from our services."“Meta proactively cooperates with law enforcement authorities to help combat the sale and distribution of illicit drugs.”The Wall Street Journal reported that on Friday‚ Nick Clegg‚ Meta's president of global affairs‚ joined the State Department's efforts to crack down on the sale of synthetic drugs online and educate users about the serious risks involved in it.Clegg wrote the following on X on Friday: "The opioid epidemic is a major public health issue that requires action from all parts of US society. That’s why @Meta has joined the Alliance to Prevent Drug Harms alongside the @StateDept @UNODC &; @Snapchat to help disrupt the sale of synthetic drugs online + educate users about the risks." — (@) Social media companies have recently come under fire from members of Congress for distributing content that has ultimately harmed young people‚ specifically children‚ per the report.Lawmakers have been actively holding talks about the need to hold massive technology companies accountable for what third parties share on their platforms. However‚ these efforts have been hampered by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act‚ which states that online platforms are not liable for what third parties post to their platforms. There are only a few exceptions to this rule. The Post reported that during the COVID-19 pandemic‚ telehealth companies exploited Facebook and Instagram by advertising prescription drugs for the treatment of ADHD‚ anxiety‚ and other medical conditions. The advertisements ultimately led to the abuse of controlled substances such as Adderall‚ per the report.Like Blaze News? Wholesome ‘The Brady Bunch’ Had A Different Name Because Of A Gritty Western

The Brady Bunch has long proven its staying power in the cultural landscape of American television history. But to get there‚ it encountered some surprising bumps along the way‚ with the most unexpected coming from a grim‚ bloody Western called The Wild Bunch‚ which gave showrunners a hard time picking a title. Meet the Wild Bunch! Wait‚ no – the Brady Brood! Both are actually correct‚ but they contain very different content. The Wild Bunch was a film released in 1969 that followed an outlaw gang trying to adapt to a changing world – and its bloody content made it hard for The Brady Brood to pin down a final show name. ‘The Wild Bunch’ made ‘The Brady Bunch’ start out with a very different name The Brady family had to look out for The Wild Bunch / Everett Collection Meet The Wild Bunch‚ which not only made the American Film Institute’s list of 100 greatest movies of all time‚ but was also selected for preservation from the Library of Congress. Directed by Sam Peckinpah‚ The Wild Bunch is celebrated for its intricate editing and filming techniques‚ and its writing was nominated for an Oscar for Best Writing. In short‚ this movie was a big‚ popular deal. RELATED: ‘The Brady Bunch’ Cast Then And Now 2024 It was also unabashedly gritty‚ grim‚ and violent – bloody violent‚ at that. The macabre was a famous staple of the film; anyone who thought The Wild Bunch at some point would think of its graphic violence. So‚ early – very early – in the creation process of The Brady Bunch‚ when the word “bunch” was proposed for the show’s title‚ Paramount was squeamish towards it and its potential association for Peckinpah’s grand‚ dark Western epic. So‚ for a time‚ the show was determinedly referred to as The Brady Brood. But that wasn’t even the only difference between how it started and what viewers fell in love with. ‘The Brady Bunch’ had to go through a few more changes to become what we know today THE WILD BUNCH‚ William Holden‚ 1969 / Everett Collection The “bunch” aversion to maximize distance from The Wild Bunch persisted for quite a bit‚ meaning the scripts for the show’s pilot episode‚ “The Honeymoon‚” actually had The Brady Brood printed on them. A picture of Mike Lookinland’s script shows the original working title still in use‚ only for it to eventually be crossed out in blue ink‚ with “Bunch” written on top. THE BRADY BUNCH‚ (clockwise from top center): Robert Reed‚ Barry Williams‚ Christopher Knight‚ Susan Olsen‚ Mike Lookinland‚ Eve Plumb‚ Maureen McCormick‚ (Season 3)‚ 1969-74 / Everett Collection But even when “bunch” did see use‚ something else was different: the titular family was called the Bradleys. That’s right: ABC almost introduced audiences to the Bradley Bunch! Would it be the Bradley Brood? On top of all this‚ the beloved housekeeper Alice was originally Kris‚ a middle-aged Swede who fostered a sweet tooth while looking over the Bradleys. What a different show we almost got!
