Former President Donald Trump said on Saturday he has privately chosen someone to be his running mate in the 2024 election. Though he did not divulge the identity of that person, Trump gave insight into his decision-making process while at a campaign stop in Philadelphia. Trump’s campaign has reportedly sent vetting materials to several potential running mates. North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) have emerged as finalists, NBC News reported last week. The pair have become surrogates for Trump on the campaign trail and hit the airwaves in talking up his campaign. Burgum told CNN on Sunday that Trump has the “luxury” of not having to pick a running mate to attract more voters, but rather someone who can help him govern. Ashley Etienne, a former aide to Vice President Kamala Harris, said during a recent CNN panel that Vance would pose the “greatest threat” to her old boss in a debate. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) is a third prospect, however there are some doubts about enthusiasm. And there are potential complications with the 12th Amendment and its clause against a presidential ticket having two people from the same state. Trump, a longtime businessman from New York, changed his residency to Florida in 2019. Other people who are said to be in the veepstakes mix includes former Cabinet member Ben Carson and House Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY). Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), and Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) have also been floated as contenders. Trump is expected to announce his running mate around the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next month. A senior adviser for Trump’s campaign told NBC News a top VP criterion “is a strong leader who will make a great President for eight years after his next four year term concludes.”

A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) advisory board said that being religious, having served in the military, or supporting former president Donald Trump are all markers of domestic extremists, according to documents obtained by America First Legal. The legal nonprofit obtained documents from the since-disbanded Homeland Intelligence Experts Group through litigation and released the latest tranche of documents on Friday. America First Legal in conjunction with former ambassador Ric Grenell sued DHS over the board, which had included members such as former CIA director John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper. Brennan and Clapper publicly pushed Russian collusion hoax conspiracies against Trump, and both former national security officials in October 2020 denied the authenticity of Hunter Biden’s laptop, attributing it to likely Russian disinformation. Notes from the defunct board say that researchers have identified “being in the military or religious” as a marker of domestic extremists. Trump supporters compose “most of the Domestic Terrorism threat,” the board suggested. “If you ask researchers to dive into indicators of extremists and terrorism, they might indicate being in the military or religious. This being identified as an indicator suggests we should be more worried about these. We need the space to talk about it honestly,” notes from the board said.  “There is a political backdrop to all of this,” the notes said. “It seems that most of the Domestic Terrorism threat now comes from supporters of the former president. It is not like you want a political advantage, but people have attacked the government and its institutions for the last six years.” America First Legal released the notes as part of its “#DeepStateDiaries” series on documents obtained from the Biden administration that reveal information about its inner workings. The legal nonprofit made its first release in the series on Thursday. Gene Hamilton, executive director of American First Legal, called the revelations evidence of “unabashed partisanship” at Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ DHS and an effort to use the powers of the federal government against political opponents. “These shocking records reveal apparent unabashed partisanship on this Deep State committee,” Hamilton told Fox News. “All efforts to weaponize the federal government against political opponents of the ruling regime should be stopped. We look forward to exposing more records in the coming days.” White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates told Fox News that the White House does not consider Americans who identify as religious, served in the military, or support Trump to be a significant threat to the United States.

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum pushed CNN over the weekend to challenge President Joe Biden in this week’s upcoming presidential debate over false claims that he made in 2020 about Hunter Biden’s laptop. Burgum, who is one of the candidates that Trump is considering for his vice presidential running mate, made the remarks during a Sunday interview with Kaitlan Collins on “State of the Union” when asked how important he thought it was for Trump to have a “strong performance.” “Well, I think it’s something that America is very excited to look forward to, and I’m sure it’s going to be a very good debate,” he said. “But I think, again, there has been a real effort on the Biden team to try to lower expectations. But I think we have to look at the guy’s run for office more than a dozen times. He’s run for president four times. He’s been campaigning since President Nixon was in office.” Burgum then addressed Hunter Biden’s laptop, which Biden falsely claimed was “Russian disinformation.” The laptop was later used as evidence in a criminal trial against Hunter Biden where he was convicted of multiple weapons charges. “I think this is a real opportunity for CNN, most trusted name in news, to ask some tough questions, because this is a rematch,” Burgum said. “And when we had this debate just before the election four years ago, Joe Biden looked into the camera and said that Hunter Biden’s laptop was a smear campaign, Russian disinformation, called it garbage.” “And now we know that none of that is true,” he added. “And I think this is an opportunity. I think America is waiting. I mean, CNN’s got an opportunity to ask tough questions of both these candidates.” Collins claimed that there would be “tough questions for everybody” at the debate.
