Never Let Anyone Forget How The Media Lied To The World About Joe Biden

by Derek Hunter, Townhall: Honestly, I didn’t think Joe Biden would do well during the first presidential debate, but I would not have bet money that he would have pulled the equivalent of repeatedly smacking himself in the face with a frying pan. I can’t stand the man and I almost felt bad for him. […]

7 Unexpected Friendships Between Historical Figures

What does a grumpy old widower have in common with a chubby young boy scout? Nothing! This is why the eventual friendship between the cranky Carl and the young Russell was so entertaining in Pixar’s 2009 film, Up. Imagine how much more interesting it would be if such unlikely friendships happened in real life. Luckily, they do—among very famous historical figures, no less. Here are some of the most unexpected ones: 1. Harry Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle One was an illusionist; the other was a famous author. Harry Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle formed an unlikely friendship after they were brought together by their spiritualism.  They were already celebrities by the time they met in 1920. Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories were massive hits, and Houdini had already staged dozens of live shows performing various stunts and escape acts.  It wasn’t just their careers that made them different. The Guardian described Conan Doyle as a Scottish Victorian gentleman, while Houdini was a self-educated Hungarian immigrant in the U.S.  Conan Doyle believed in the supernatural and was convinced that Houdini had magical powers that allowed him to perform his illusions. Conan Doyle sought out Houdini, and they became quick friends.  However, after many public outings, the friendship fizzled when Conan Doyle’s wife, Jean, attempted to contact Houdini’s mother through a private seance. According to reports, Houdini’s mother tried to make contact through 15 pages of writing. Houdini didn’t believe it was his mother because the language was too grammatically correct.  Additionally, Houdini denounced mediums, which annoyed Conan Doyle. The friendship was never mended.   A British TV series was commissioned to showcase this fascinating relationship. Houdini & Doyle aired ten episodes in 2016. 2. Marilyn Monroe and Ella Fitzgerald Both were entertainers, so it should not have been much of a surprise that Marilyn Monroe and Ella Fitzgerald were friends. However, Fitzgerald was Black, and segregation was still rampant in the United States at the time.  Fitzgerald had been making waves as a jazz singer since the 1930s. Up to the 1950s, she had only booked gigs in small venues. It wasn’t until she was given a chance to play at Mocambo nightclub that her career skyrocketed. Guess who made that possible? Marilyn Monroe.  The nightclub reportedly didn’t want to book Fitzgerald in 1955 because of her race. Monroe referred to Fitzgerald as her “very favorite person.” She called the nightclub and got her the gig.  Yahoo! quoted Monroe’s friend Amy Greene, who described the incident: “Marilyn read this in the paper and got very annoyed and called the manager and said, ‘Hi, this is Marilyn Monroe, and if you rebook Ella Fitzgerald, I will come every night to hear her sing.’” Nobody said no to Monroe, so Fitzgerald was booked.  They first met in 1954 when Monroe watched Fitzgerald perform at a small nightclub in Los Angeles.  3. Prince and Muhammad Ali They were both fans of each other but only met in June 1997, after both had already peaked in their careers. Prince was such a fan of the boxer that he didn’t mind that he only had two days’ notice for the scheduled meeting at the Hay-Adams Hotel in Washington, DC. Prince was asked to support Ali’s World Healing Project.  The BBC reported that Prince said this when Ali’s team invited him: “He said, ‘Muhammad wants you to…’ and I said ‘Yes.’ I didn’t even let him finish. He could have said, ‘Mow the lawn,’ and I would have been down with it. Muhammad’s my hero. He has been since I was a child.” During the meeting, they reportedly bonded over magic, which started a lasting friendship. Both died in 2016—Prince on April 21 and Ali on June 3.  When Prince died, Ali tweeted: “We’ve lost a true original. Prince was someone who cared for others and used his genius to help many.”  4. Joe Louis and Max Schmeling Joe Louis and Max Schmeling were rivals in the ring. However, years after their time as boxers, they found common ground and became friends.  Louis was a much younger Black American pugilist, and Schmeling was a German boxer with something to prove. Schmeling had a fan in Adolf Hitler, which unfortunately got the boxer fighting for Nazism. Boxing enthusiasts had dubbed Louis and Schmeling’s 1936 and 1938 fights as a battle between Americanism and Nazism.  To be clear, Schmeling wasn’t a Nazi. However, his win over Louis was used as propaganda in favor of Nazism. Louis, for his part, was devastated by the loss via knockout, his first. A rematch was organized two years later, and Louis dominated—he knocked Schmeling out in the first round.  Americans celebrated the win uproariously. A loss against Germany and Nazism would have been unfathomable. However, Louis and Schmeling weren’t comfortable with the burden they had to carry for their countries. Louis didn’t want to represent a country that oppressed Black people, and Schmeling didn’t support Adolf Hitler and his party. They bonded over their similar situations.  In the end, only death separated the two. Louis died in 1981, and Schmeling was one of his pallbearers. Their friendship was immortalized in the 2002 TV movie Joe and Max.  5. President Ulysses S. Grant and James Longstreet Unlike many of the duos on this list, Ulysses S. Grant, who became the 18th U.S. President, and James Longstreet had been friends for a while. They were at West Point together, with Longstreet graduating in 1842 and Grant a year later. There are unverified reports that Longstreet became Grant’s best man at his wedding to Julia Dent in 1848.  So, what was unusual with their friendship? It was astonishing that it lasted through the Civil War, where they fought from opposing sides. Grant was the commanding general that led the Union Army to victory in 1865. Longstreet was a general of the Confederate Army and the principal subordinate of Robert E. Lee.  Longstreet was responsible for convincing Lee to surrender and end the war. Grant and Longstreet resumed their friendship and served at the Jefferson Barracks shortly after their West Point graduation. They then fought side by side in the Mexican-American War.  6. Pope John Paul II and Ali Agca Can you really be friends with the Pope? Perhaps not. However, the extraordinary meeting between Pope John Paul II and his would-be assassin is worth including in this unexpected friendships list.  On May 13, 1981, Mehmet Ali Agca shot Pope John Paul II as he entered St. Peter’s Square to address the faithful. The Pope was hit in the abdomen multiple times and was in critical condition. Despite being gravely hurt, Pope John Paul II said, “Pray for my brother… whom I have sincerely forgiven.” Agca was immediately restrained, arrested, and sentenced to life in prison. Reports aren’t consistent regarding Agca’s reason for the attempt on the Pope’s life. One account stated that it was because the Pope was the leader of the Crusades, while another said it was supposed to be revenge for the attack on the Grand Mosque in Mecca. He had been a member of the Turkish national group.  In a Dec. 1983 file photo provided by Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, Pope John Paul II meets Mehmet Ali Agca, in Agca’s prison cell in Rome. On December 27, 1983, Pope John Paul II visited Agca in prison. Agca kissed the Pope’s hand. They spoke for at least 20 minutes out of earshot. The Pope also gave Agca a gift, a silver rosary.  When the Pope fell ill, Agca sent a letter wishing him well. When Pope John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, Agca and his family grieved.  Agca was eventually released in 2010. Four years later, he laid roses at the tomb of the late pontiff.  7. Mark Twain and Helen Keller They met in 1895 when Helen Keller was only 14, and Mark Twain was 60. Despite the age gap, the two struck a surprising friendship. In his autobiography, Twain recalled: “Without touching anything, and without seeing anything, obviously, and without hearing anything, she seemed to quite well recognize the character of her surroundings.” Keller was also instantly at ease when she met Twain. “The instant I clasped his hand in mine, I knew that he was my friend,” Keller said.  Twain helped Keller get into Radcliffe College, which has since been integrated into Harvard University. She became the first deaf and blind person in the U.S. to earn a college degree. The two continued to write to each other, and when Twain’s wife Olivia died in 1904, Keller wrote to comfort him. It wasn’t all sentimental, as both were known to tease each other via correspondence.  Keller loved that Twain treated her like a regular person. Shortly before Twain’s death, Keller spent time with him at his home in Redding, Connecticut.  Friendships Form in the Most Unlikely Places and Among Unexpected People Friendships often bloom because of shared backgrounds and circumstances. However, some relationships form naturally despite there being nothing in common between them. But they endure because both parties nurture the bond and are determined to maintain it. The post 7 Unexpected Friendships Between Historical Figures first appeared on History Defined.

Evil: Within 3 Minutes of New Account, Instagram Serves Sex Content to 13-Year-Old Boys, What Happens at 20 Minutes Is Worse

Parents beware: Instagram is now the most insidious tool of the last sickening pangs of the sexual revolution. That's saying something, considering that Meta's picture- and video-sharing social media platform was already known to be a digital hovel of sleaze and obscenity. Things are somehow worse than imagined, however, according...

EXPLAINED: What Happens To Biden’s Campaign Donations If He Drops Out?

With Joe Biden almost surely set to drop out of the race soon (or be removed, or die) you may be wondering like I was: what will happen to all his campaign contributions? Millions upon millions…. Remember just a few weeks ago when Barack Obama helped Biden raise $28 million? WATCH: President Barack Obama Has To Guide A Confused Biden Off Stage As He FREEZES Again So what happens to all that money if Biden drops out, dies or is removed? Does it all go to Kamala? Is it just transferred to whoever replaces him? Not exactly. Allow me to explain how it would be dealt with.... If Joe Biden were to drop out of the presidential race, the handling of the campaign donations would follow the Federal Election Commission (FEC) regulations. Here is how it would work in order of what would happen first to last (I've included citations to my sources and legal authorities): Debt Repayment: Campaign funds can be used to pay off any outstanding debts or obligations incurred during the campaign. This includes costs associated with winding down the campaign, such as office space rental, staff salaries, and office supplies (FactCheck.org) (FEC.gov). Refunds: Contributions made for the general election must be refunded to the donors if the candidate drops out before the general election. This refund must occur within 60 days unless the donor gives permission to use the funds for other purposes (Investopedia). Donations to Charities or Political Parties: Leftover funds can be donated to charitable organizations or transferred to other political committees, including national, state, or local party committees (Investopedia) (Mental Floss). Transfers to Other Candidates: The campaign can make contributions to other federal candidates, subject to limits (e.g., $2000 per election per candidate) (Mental Floss). Future Campaign Use: Funds can be saved for a future election campaign by the same candidate. If Biden decided to run for another office in the future, he could use the remaining funds for that campaign (Investopedia). Prohibited Personal Use: The funds cannot be used for personal expenses. Personal use includes expenses that would exist irrespective of the candidate’s campaign or duties as a federal officeholder, such as household items, personal mortgage or rent, and personal travel (Investopedia) (Mental Floss). Ok, so let's dig into #4 a bit.... So let's just say that The Rock ends up replacing Joe Biden. It's true that only $2,000 of the Biden Campaign Funds can be transferred directly to The Rock's campaign, which of course is basically nothing. But that's not really the end of the story. There are many loopholes and workarounds. Here are the three biggest ones: Donations to Charities: Donate an unlimited amount to charitable organizations, provided the donation does not benefit Biden personally (Investopedia) (FEC.gov). Transfers to Party Committees: Transfer unlimited amounts to national, state, or local political party committees(Mental Floss) (FEC.gov). Leadership PACs: Establish a leadership PAC, which can be used to support other candidates and political activities. This is more flexible but still subject to restrictions on personal use (Mental Floss). So that's probably where we'd see the bulk of it go....to places like the DNC or other PACs. Forbes recently published a similar analysis that lines up very nicely with what I've just posted above: KEY FACTS If a presidential candidate dropped out of the race, they would first need to repay all of their campaign vendors, and if the campaign ended before their parties’ respective conventions, where they officially select a nominee, they would have to refund all contributions designated to be used in the general election, elections lawyer Brett Kappel told Forbes. After that, Biden or Trump could try to use any leftover money to support their party’s new candidate—but campaign finance laws only allow them to transfer $2,000 directly to another federal campaign, so the vast majority of their eight-figure war chests would need to be given to other groups like political parties or PACs, a complicated process. The funds could seamlessly be transferred, without limits, to national, state or local party committees, such as the Democratic or Republican National Committees, which could use the money to support a replacement nominee or other Democratic candidates in federal down-ballot races—a scenario that would make the party largely responsible for funding a candidate’s presidential run, representing a break from most modern campaigns. FEC rules also permit limitless transfers to political action committees and to nonprofits, which can support candidates that align with their broader mission statement, though engaging in political campaigns cannot be their primary activity. Political action committees and super PACs supporting presidential candidates could seamlessly begin spending their money to support replacement candidates, but super PACs are legally prohibited from coordinating directly with campaigns. A presidential candidate who drops out of the race could also create what’s known as a leadership PAC, which are controlled by federal office holders and used to help other candidates for office, but leadership PACs have a $5,000 limit on donations to and from the organization, Kappel said, noting “it would be more efficient to just give [unspent campaign money] to the party committees.” CNN also had an interesting analysis more generally exploring what happens in several key things if Biden is replaced: Who could replace Biden? You can assume, for instance, that Vice President Kamala Harris would be a top contender to be on the ballot in such a scenario. But there would be other potential candidates who previously argued they could run a more effective campaign against former President Donald Trump. Would someone like California Gov. Gavin Newsom – who offered unqualified support for Biden in the wake of Thursday’s debate – challenge Harris at the convention? Settling on a replacement could be divisive and ugly. It would be up to the delegates to decide, in a series of votes after frantic lobbying, who to pick. On the Democratic side, there is also another group to consider: the “superdelegates,” a group of about 700 senior party leaders and elected officials who are automatically delegates to the convention based on their position. Under normal party rules, they can’t vote on the first ballot if they could swing the nomination, but they’re free to vote on subsequent ballots. What if a candidate left the race after the convention? It would take a drastic event for a candidate to leave the race in the few months between a party’s nominating convention in the summer and the general election in November. Democrats and Republicans have slightly different methods of dealing with this possibility. You can imagine the end result would probably be that the running mate stepped up to be on the general election ballot, but that is not necessarily guaranteed. Democrats – The Democratic National Committee is empowered to fill a vacancy on the national ticket after the convention under party rules, after the party chair consults with Democratic governors and congressional leadership. Republicans – If a vacancy occurs on the Republican side, the Republican National Committee can either reconvene the national convention or select a new candidate itself. Would the running mate automatically become the nominee? An in-depth Congressional Research Service memo also notes that if an incumbent president becomes incapacitated after winning the party’s nomination, the 25th Amendment would elevate the vice president to the presidency, but party rules would determine who rises to become the party’s nominee. Neither party, according to the CRS, requires that the presidential candidate’s running mate be elevated to the top of the ticket, though that would obviously be the most likely scenario. Has a candidate ever left the race after the convention? In modern times, per the CRS, the Democrat running for vice president in 1972, Sen. Thomas Eagleton, was forced to step aside after the convention after it was discovered that he was treated for mental illness. (1972 was a very different time! Today, thankfully, there is not nearly the stigma attached to mental health.) The DNC actually needed to convene a meeting to affirm Sargent Shriver as Democratic nominee George McGovern’s second-choice running mate. What if a president-elect was incapacitated after the election? If a president-elect was to die, timing is again important. Under the Constitution, it is electors meeting in state capitols who technically cast votes for the presidency. While some states require that they vote for the winner of the election in their state, in others they have leeway. The CRS memo, which cites several congressional hearings on the subject, suggests it would clearly make sense for a vice president-elect to simply assume the role of president-elect, but the law itself is murky. Under the 20th Amendment, if a president-elect dies, his or her running mate, the vice president-elect, becomes president. There could be some question, for instance, about when exactly a person becomes president-elect. Is it after the electors meet in December, or after Congress meets to count Electoral College votes on January 6?

Graham Rips ‘Compliant Media’ For Hiding Biden’s Cognitive Decline From Public

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) ripped the media during an interview over the weekend for hiding President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline from the public. Graham made the remarks during a Sunday interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” with co-host Dana Bash when asked about Biden’s disastrous debate performance. “This idea that Biden had a bad night, that’s not the story. He’s had a bad presidency, had a disastrous debate,” Graham said. “How could we get here? How could the American people see what they saw and not be forewarned? You have got a compliant media who’s written off the problems with President Biden. They have tried to soft-sell this as attack by the right wing that he’s compromised. There is no cheap-fakes here.” “The man is compromised, and the media has been covering,” he continued. “He’s not a good president. He’s a decent man. He’s a failed president. He is compromised. That’s the storyline here.” Graham said that what he is worried about is what will happen between “now and November” given the apparent state of Biden’s mental fitness. “Does Iran get a nuclear weapon because they think Joe Biden’s so compromised, he’s not going to do anything about it?” he asked. “You got a compliant media and a lockstep Democratic Party who cheers bad policy. Have you heard one person named to replace Biden that would do anything different on the border? No. Have you heard anybody criticize his withdrawal from Afghanistan they’re considering replacing him with? So this is a very dangerous time for America and the world at large. This election turned from this debate. Clearly, President Biden is compromised. But, most importantly, his policies are not working.” WATCH: President Trump had an excellent debate night. He was clear, concise and focused. President Biden performed terribly at the debate, but that’s not the whole story. He’s had a disastrous presidency propped up by mainstream media. pic.twitter.com/2StfleMfjt — Lindsey Graham (@LindseyGrahamSC) June 30, 2024
