Reba McEntire Begs Fans To Help Save PBS From $1.1 Billion In Potential Federal Budget Cuts

Reba McEntire doing what she can to help save PBS. The living country music legend doesn’t often endorse… anything really. Reba has never had an interest in talking politics, and she’s even gone as far to say that it’s “not her job” to do so. But with the potential future of PBS hanging in balance, McEntire decided to speak out in the form of a video posted onto social media. Soon, the Senate will vote on a big budget bill that could very well cut the funding of PBS. Some Americans might see that as a good thing, while others – like Reba – see public broadcasting and specifically PBS as an institution that should be protected and financially supported. The House of Representatives already approved the rescissions package back in June, which means it now goes to the Senate for a vote. If the budget bill were to pass, over $1 billion in funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting would be cut. In other words, the money that has helped keep PBS plugging along all these years would suddenly be more. Reba, who has partnered with PBS for TV specials across four decades, was made aware of the possible cut in funding and responded with this message supporting the Public Broadcasting Service and calling those who also value public broadcasting into action: “Hey, it’s Reba. From my appearances on Austin City Limits in 1987, to South Pacific in Concert from Carnegie Hall in 2006, I’ve had a long relationship with PBS. Now, PBS needs our help. In just a few short days, the Senate is going to vote on a bill that would remove federal funding from PBS.  PBS has done so much for us, from children’s education to teaching us about science, the Earth, and the stars. To the most near to my heart, the incredible arts programming that brings the power of live performance into our homes. If you believe in PBS like I do, check out ProtectMyPublicMedia.org to find out how you can help. Let’s help keep PBS keep delivering the incredible programming that we all love so much.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by PBS (@pbs) To be honest with you, I had a hard time focusing there because of the ill-placed teleprompter. Regardless, Reba McEntire got her point across… and she rarely ever puts her foot down on anything even remotely political. This is more of a “Save PBS” message, but considering the circumstances, it has been politicized a bit. And it’s been interesting to see the mix of comments underneath the post. To be clear, there were more people that supported Reba’s pro-PBS message. Many thanked Reba for speaking up about this issue, and others commended the country artist for showing her support. On the flip side, there were a number of people saying that the federal budget cut would be helpful, and that PBS should find another way to be funded. Others claimed that PBS has been “taking advantage of tax dollars for years,” and didn’t need a celebrity like Reba McEntire rushing in to try and defend and/or save it. In Reba’s defense though, we might not have video of her 1987 Austin City Limits performance if it weren’t for PBS: The post Reba McEntire Begs Fans To Help Save PBS From $1.1 Billion In Potential Federal Budget Cuts first appeared on Whiskey Riff.

Pat Green To Host Benefit For Texas Flood Victims Featuring Artists Like Miranda Lambert, Cross Canadian Ragweed & More

Stepping up in the wake of complete tragedy in his personal life. I’m sure we’ve all seen the devastating news about how South-central Texas was ravaged by flash flooding over the 4th of July weekend, and over 130 people have already been confirmed deceased. Camp Mystic – a Christian girls camp located in Texas Hill Country –  is currently grieving the unfathomable loss of 27 young campers and counselors. And the tragedy continues to unfold. While dozens of people are still unaccounted for, and we won’t know the official toll and extent of the damage for weeks (if not months), what we do know is that the South-central Texas area currently needs all the help it can get to recover and pick up the pieces. Music is of course healing, and in times of distress, the people who make the music are the ones who often step up. When Hurricane Helene caused similarly tragic flooding in Western North Carolina last fall, Eric Church and Luke Combs put together the Concert for Carolina benefit, which raised over $24 million for disaster relief. And now with the devastating flooding in Texas, other artists with connections to Texas are putting together benefit concerts to help heal the Lone Star state. Country music artist Josh Weathers put together a benefit concert – and raised over $400,000 – less than 48 hours after the disaster happened, which was impressive all around. Then George Strait announced that a “Strait To The Heart” benefit concert was being organized and would take place later this month on July 27. Miranda Lambert has also made it public that she has a Texas benefit concert in the works. The Josh Abbott Band announced their “Deep in the Heart Benefit Concert” earlier today, which will feature Carly Pearce, Casey Donahew, Kaitlin Butts, The Panhandlers, and Wade Bowen. And another benefit was announced this afternoon, which is being hosted by Texas artist Pat Green officially dubbed Pat Green and Friends: Texas Flood Relief Livestream. The singer-songwriter will live-stream a special, non-ticketed benefit from Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, this Wednesday, July 16th at 6:30 pm CST. There will be no audience be in attendance, though it will be streamed for free on YouTube with plenty of very talented artists set to perform. Working in partnership with the Texas Rangers and REV Entertainment, Miranda Lambert, Jon Pardi, Dierks Bentley, Corey Kent, Casey Donahew, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Josh Abbott, Ryan Bingham, Eli Young Band, Flatland Cavalry, Joe Nichols, Kaitlin Butts, Ty Myers, Kevin Fowler, Aaron Watson, Jon Wolfe and Bob Schneider will take part, as well as additional artists still to be announced. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pat Green (@patgreenmusic) All proceeds from the concert and livestream will be distributed to Kerr County Relief, TEXSAR and the Do It For Durrett Foundation via The Pat Green Foundation, directly benefiting the families affected by this heart-wrenching disaster. It’s all extremely personal for Green, not only because he’s a Texas native, but also because he very tragically lost his younger brother John, John’s wife Julia and their two young sons due to the historic flooding of the Guadalupe River in Central Texas. It’s beyond impressive that he’s been able to put this together considering the heartbreaking circumstances around is family, but it’s admirable that he’s stepping up despite it and will surely do a ton of good for other who were impacted so tragically.
