Usually when a Starbucks employee gets fired‚ it doesn’t make national news. However‚ this particular instance is getting a lot of attention because the alleged termination comes after the employees successfully thwarted a robbery! To many‚ Michael Harris and his coworker‚ Devin Jones-Ransom‚ are heroes. Yet‚ their bravery appears to have cost them their jobs. Two men‚ seemingly armed‚ entered the coffee shop and attempted a robbery. "I thought I was gonna die that day. They walked in‚ announced that it was a robbery‚” Michael Harris recalled. “They started going up to people and frisking them for stuff.” The robbers wanted Michael to empty a cash register. However‚ he wasn’t able to open it. One of the robbers then hit Michael in the head with his weapon but the gun broke into pieces. "The trigger for it busted off‚" Michael said. That’s when Michael and the others realized the weapon was fake. And in that moment‚ they decided to fight back. Starbucks Employee Gets Fired One of the robbers took off‚ but Michael and his coworker‚ Devin‚ succeeded in subduing the other man. They kept him there until police were able to respond and take over the scene. However‚ according to Michael Harris‚ a few weeks after the thwarted robbery‚ the Starbucks employee got fired. "They terminated me‚" he said. He went on to allege‚ "They didn't really give me a reason why I was terminated. They just told me I was‚ and I just had to accept it." Losing his job came as a complete shock. And it devastated the 20-year-old. "That job was helping me pay for college‚" Michael explained. "I just don't understand it. I thought it was the right thing to do." Fighting Back Constitutes As A Policy Violation Starbucks asserts that Michael and his coworker didn’t follow the proper protocol to “de-escalate” the situation during the attempted robbery. Part of that training includes armed robbery scenarios where partners are asked to comply with demands and to avoid doing or saying anything that can escalate the situation.” Now‚ Michael Harris is fighting back yet again. He has enlisted the help of attorney Ryan Krupp to file a lawsuit against Starbucks because of the termination. The Illinois election board unanimously voted to keep Donald Trump on the state’s primary ballot‚ rejecting a challenge under the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment. But the hearing officer recommended the board let the courts make the ultimate decision. The eight-member board‚ composed of four Democrats and four Republicans‚ agreed with a recommendation from its lawyer to let Trump remain on the ballot by determining it didn’t have the authority to determine whether he violated the U.S Constitution. Board member Catherine McCrory prefaced her vote with a statement: “I want it to be clear that this Republican believes that there was an insurrection on Jan. 6. There’s no doubt in my mind that he manipulated‚ instigated‚ aided and abetted an insurrection on Jan. 6.” But McCrory said she agreed the board doesn’t have jurisdiction to enforce that conclusion. However‚ the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear the case over Trump’s eligibility for the ballot. The high court will hear oral arguments in February. Per CBS News: A state trial court in Denver ruled in November that the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6 constituted an insurrection and found Trump engaged in insurrection‚ marking the first time a judge has reached such a conclusion about his conduct. But the judge ruled that Section 3 does not apply to the presidency or someone who has taken the presidential oath‚ and ordered Trump to be listed on the primary ballot. The Colorado Supreme Court‚ though‚ reversed the lower court’s finding about the scope of Section 3 and‚ in its 4-3 decision‚ said Trump is disqualified from holding the presidency. “We do not reach these conclusions lightly. We are mindful of the magnitude and weight of the questions now before us‚” the majority wrote in its opinion. “We are likewise mindful of our solemn duty to apply the law‚ without fear or favor‚ and without being swayed by public reaction to the decisions that the law mandates we reach.” Trump and the Colorado Republican Party appealed the decision to the Supreme Court‚ urging the justices to overturn the state high court’s ruling. All parties‚ including the voters who challenged Trump’s eligibility‚ pushed the court to decide the issue swiftly. If allowed to stand‚ the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling would “mark the first time in the history of the United States that the judiciary has prevented voters from casting ballots for the leading major-party presidential candidate‚” lawyers for the former president warned the justices in a filing. The Fulton County‚ Georgia‚ government was reportedly hit with a cyberattack over the weekend. According to NBC News‚ the incident impacted all departments around Fulton County. The offices of District Attorney Fani Willis‚ who is prosecuting Donald Trump on election interference charges‚ were impacted by the cyber event. The incident reportedly brought online transactions‚ such as filings for property tax and marriage licenses‚ to a halt. County employees received an email notification about the outage Monday‚ the official said. Fulton County Board of Commissioners Chairman Robb Pitts confirmed at a news briefing Monday afternoon that the outage‚ which he said affected the county’s phones‚ courts and tax systems‚ “was a result of a cybersecurity incident” and that law enforcement was investigating. “We do not yet have a specific time frame for when these systems will be restored‚” Pitts said. “At this time‚ we are not aware of any transfer of sensitive information about citizens or employees‚ but we will continue to look carefully at this issue‚” he added. “While most Fulton County offices are open‚ certain transaction types may be limited during this outage‚ including transactions using the property tax system and the justice system affecting several departments. These include e-filing as well as firearms and marriage licenses. There may be other department impacts as well‚” the Fulton County government posted to Facebook. “The downtown Atlanta office of the Fulton County Tax Commissioner will be closed on Monday‚ January 29. For those caught in the middle‚ some were just left to joke. “I’m wondering who didn’t pay the internet bill‚” said Louis Amaru. Pitts says it is working to address the issues but has not given a timeline for a fix. Multiple law enforcement agencies are working this case‚ including the FBI which released this statement: “We are aware of the incident with Fulton County IT and have been in contact with them. While we cannot comment on any specific incidents‚ the FBI routinely advises the public and private sectors about cyberthreats in order to help them guard against the actions of cybercriminals.
