A female snowboarder found herself trapped for 15 hours inside a ski gondola in the midst of freezing temperatures at a Lake Tahoe resort‚ according to the Associated Press. She kept warm by rubbing her hands and feet together.Monica Laso stepped into a gondola at Heavenly Ski Resort around 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. She planned to take the lift down the mountain because she was too tired to snowboard down‚ but the gondola stopped just minutes later‚ leaving her swinging in the sky.Though she yelled for help‚ no one on the ground could hear her. She did not have a cellphone‚ making it impossible to call someone for assistance‚ according to a report from KCRA. She went on to say "I screamed desperately until I lost my voice‚” Laso said in Spanish during an interview with the television station. She spent the remainder of the night rubbing her feet and hands together to keep warm‚ according to the report. The temperature in the area had dropped to 23 degrees that evening.Laso's friends soon reported her missing to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office on Thursday when she did not return from her outing on the mountain. The AP reported that she was not discovered until Friday morning when the gondola started back up again for the day.The ski resort has vowed to get to the bottom of how Laso got trapped overnight. The resort is located on the southeastern side of the lake‚ near the California-Nevada border.Tom Fortune‚ the resort's vice president and chief operating officer‚ said in a statement that "[t]he safety and wellbeing of our guests is our top priority at Heavenly Mountain Resort."Kim George‚ a battalion chief and spokesperson for South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue‚ said paramedics were dispatched to the resort around 8:30 a.m.‚ shortly after Laso was discovered by the resort.The report noted that Laso was responsive when she was found and refused to receive medical attention at a local hospital. George went on to say that she had never seen anything like this in her 23 years of service‚ adding "I'm very curious to hear the story."The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the gondola had been closed earlier this month for mechanical reasons. Aaron Keyak‚ the State Department's deputy special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism‚ suggested that anti-Semitism has spread throughout China since Hamas' surprise attack against the Jewish state on October 7‚ according to Fox News Digital. While YouTube is not allowed in China‚ the massive Eastern country has its own version of video-sharing and social media platforms operated by TikTok owner ByteDance. And those platforms are reportedly filled to the brim with pro-Hitler videos‚ memes‚ and other pro-Nazi content.The Times of Israel reported last year about how Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List‚" a highly acclaimed film in China at one time‚ has now been "review-bombed" since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7. In the early days of telescopic astronomy‚ you could only focus on one small region of the sky at a time. Careful observations had to be done by hand‚ and so much of the breakthrough work centered around a particular object in the sky. A nebula or galaxy‚ quasar or pulsar. But over the years we’ve been able to build telescopes capable of capturing a wide patch of sky all at once‚ and with automation‚ we can now map the entire sky. Early sky surveys took years to complete‚ but many modern sky surveys can look for changes on the order of weeks or days. This ability to watch for changes across the sky is changing the way we do astronomy‚ and it is beginning to yield some interesting results. As a case in point‚ an infrared sky survey is revealing hidden stars we hadn’t noticed before. In a series of papers published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society‚ the authors have analyzed data from a decade-long survey called the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope (VISTA). VISTA allows astronomers to keep an eye on hundreds of millions of stars at infrared wavelengths. In these works‚ the team combed through the observations to focus on about 200 stars that showed the most dramatic shifts in brightness. Credit: Philip Lucas/University of Hertfordshire One goal of the studies was to look for very young stars. Stars in the earliest moments of transition toward becoming true fusion-powered stars. And within their selected stars they found 32 erupting protostars. All of them experienced a rapid increase of at least a factor of 40‚ and some brightened as much as a factor of 300. The outbursts lasted for months or years‚ and they seem to occur within the disk of matter surrounding the young stars. Based on the dynamics‚ these bursts can accelerate the growth of young stars‚ but they could also make it more difficult for planets to form. They refer to these turbulent protostars as squalling newborns. The team also found a surprise. Deep within the center of our galaxy‚ they found 21 red giant stars with dramatic brightness changes. They turned out to be a new type of red giant known as old smokers. The center of our galaxy is rich with heavy elements‚ so these red giants have a high metalicity. As they age‚ they can cast off clouds of dust that can obscure the star for a time. So the star temporarily fades from view and then re-brightens as the clouds disperse. This discovery could change our understanding of how heavy elements are released into the galaxy to be used by new stars.
