Dolly Parton’s Nostalgic 1990 Christmas Special Is A Must-Watch This Holiday Season

Dolly Parton’s Nostalgic 1990 Christmas Special Is A Must-Watch This Holiday Season

The perfect Christmas special. Dolly Parton has done quite a few holiday specials over the years, and you can't go wrong with watching any of them on any given holiday. And in 1990, she released one for the Christmas season titled Dolly Parton's Christmas at Home, which finds her back home in Sevierville at her childhood home, surrounded by friends and family as they celebrate the holidays. She also goes around Pigeon Forge, and of course Dollywood, and the special accompanied her Christmas CD Home for the Holidays. She shared some of her most special memories growing up: "At Christmastime when I was a kid, I always loved the story about the three wise men. I used to always picture them as being like Dr. Thomas. He was the only Dr. we had up here in these hills, he used to ride the ridges on horseback taking care of the sick. He was a well educated man, and he could've made a fine living somewhere else, but he loved these people and he loved the mountains. Most of the folks up here just paid him with a live chicken or a sack of cornmeal. He delivered me, he was our preacher too so years later he tried to deliver me from sin. Of course, that was a much harder job for him. He's gone now, but what he brought to these mountains was a much greater gift than gold or frankincense." Dolly also featured her parents, Avie and Robert Lee, who had a special Christmas tradition of their own: "Well, we were very young and didn't have much money when we married 51 years ago, so I had $1 on Christmas, I bought him a box of cherry candy and handkerchief. Wrapped it, gave it to Lee, and every year since, I've given him that... long as I live, it will always be there." Avie said Lee gave him: "12 beautiful children, six boys and six girls." Dolly's sisters also joked that she would always ask for makeup for Christmas, though she never got it, because her daddy said it was "evil," though of course Dolly would find a way to make it herself. She would use matches for eyeliner and wild berries for lipstick, which she argued wasn't actually makeup because she got so creative. Technically, she's kind of right... Of course, they sang plenty of Christmas classics like "I'll Be Home For Christmas," and Dolly closed the special by saying quite beautifully: "Well, times have changed, but not my memories. No matter where I am at Christmas, my heart is always home. Merry Christmas everybody, and may God always bless you." There are so many Christmas specials out there these days, and plenty of artists have put them out as is pretty common now, but there's something so nostalgic and heartfelt about this one that really feels special and authentic. Leave it to Dolly, right? Maybe it's because it reminds me so much of my most cherished Christmas memories from growing up, but I just love this one so much. If you're looking for something family-friendly and touching to watch this Christmas, Dolly's special should be at the top of your list. WATCH: Waylon Jennings Cracks Himself Up Imitating Willie Nelson During “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys”

WATCH: Waylon Jennings Cracks Himself Up Imitating Willie Nelson During “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys”

The "bro-mance" between Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson was next level. You'd be hard pressed to find two country music stars that were closer and/or got into more trouble than Willie and Waylon. Even though Jennings passed away back in 2002, it seems as though we're still (somehow) getting the occasional never-heard-before story about the two outlaw legends. Whether they were getting stranded on the side of the road, fighting over anything and everything, or starring in stuffed crust pizza commercial together, the pair of country music singers were always great together - even when they were bickering. And speaking of greatness, I'd be remiss if I didn't use that as a smooth transition into Willie and Waylon's 1978 album Waylon & Willie. That duet project was littered with big-time hits, but none bigger than “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys." Jennings and Nelson are obviously successful standalone artists, though this project showcased they can shine just as bright when they share the stage. “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys" peaked at number one on the country charts in 1978, and the song even took home the 1979 Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. It even had some crossover success on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, reaching as high as 42. There was just something about the combination of the two outlaw country icons that just sounded right, and that was arguably most evident with “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys." And after the success that it achieved, it just didn't seem right for them to sing or perform the song without one another. But as you've likely heard before, sometimes the show must go on. How was Waylon Jennings able to keep the show moving while also giving his live audiences the pleasure of hearing the hit duet? Well, from time to time when the track made his setlist, he'd often times break out a little party trick that involved his finger and his nose... and no, not that party trick. When Waylon wanted to play “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys" without Willie Nelson, he'd simply plug one side of his nose with his finger and sing the Red-Headed Stranger's part. It seems simple, but let me assure you, the little trick that Jennings figured out sometime along the way really allows for a believable Willie Nelson sound. I'm sure Waylon also enjoyed picking on (no finger-nose pun intended) his buddy and making it appear that Willie's signature sound could be attributed to some nasal blockage. He was certainly getting a kick out of it in this video below, and even had to switch back to his regular singing voice after cracking up. Jennings could barely keep it together as he belted out the beginning of Willie's iconic lines in “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys." And before he pulled off the uncanny impersonation, he announced to the audience: "This is Willie's part. It's all in my finger." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hfyC-_X5PA
