The Milky Way is More Clumpy than Astronomers Thought

Astronomers have found a new way of accurately mapping the outer gas disk of the Milky Way using the positions of young stars. In the process, they've also discovered that our galaxy's structure is more complex than everyone thought, complete with tufty-looking "flocculent" gas clouds.

New Theory Explains Why So Many Exoplanets Crowd Close to Their Stars

The observed exoplanet population contains a large number of solar systems where multiple exoplanets follow short orbital periods. The most well-known example of a compact solar system is the TRAPPIST-1 system. There are many others, and exoplanet scientists are trying to understand how they form. Scientists at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) may have figured it out.

What Are The Most Depressing Country Songs Of All Time? Fans Sound Off

Are sad country songs and depressing country songs the same thing? I only ask because most country music fans have a “hurts so good” mentality when it comes to sad country songs. But if sad graduates to depressing… is listening still an enjoyable experience? Considering there’s a study that states sad country music is as prevalent as ever, I’d say there’s certainly an audience for the excessively-sad-sub-genre. Part of that audience is actually having quite the conversation about the “Most Depressing Country Songs” over on Reddit right now. Personally, I love a good, sad country song. Music has the power to help people process, and I strongly believe country music songs that lean towards the more somber side can actually be very therapeutic. I was happy to see that one my favorite sad songs (Hint: it’s by Sturgill Simpson/Johnny Blue Skies) was shouted out among the very respectable list. There were plenty of other all-time sad songs that Reddit users also brought to the table, so let’s take a look at the list, shall we? “‘He Stopped Loving Her Today’ by George Jones.” “‘Hello in There’ by John Prine.” “‘Broken Window Serenade’ by Whiskey Myers.” “‘Scarecrow in the Garden’ by Chris Stapleton.” “‘The Ballad of Ira Hayes’ by Johnny Cash.” “‘Coward of the County’ by Kenny Rogers.” “‘I Just Told Mama Goodbye’ by Hank Williams.” “‘Waiting Around to Die’ by Townes Van Zandt.” “‘Jupiter’s Faerie’ by Sturgill Simpson.” “‘Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain’ by Willie Nelson.” “‘Cherokee Rose’ by Colby Acuff.” “‘Dying Isn’t Cheap’ by Cody Jinks.” “‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’ by Bonnie Raitt.” “‘I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry’ by Hank Williams.” And that’s really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the list that dozens of Redditors have contributed to over on the site. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t include my favorite response of the entire Reddit thread. This user didn’t pinpoint just one song… they decided to take the “most depressing” prompt a bit further, and it was hilarious: “Any ‘bro-country’ song over the last 10 years depresses me. Make me mourn for traditional country.” Amen brother. Amen. Cue up the “Sad Songs Make Me Happy” playlist while you’re here: Listen on Spotify: Listen on Apple Music: And hey, while we’re on the topic of sad and depressing country music, you might as well hop off over to the Whiskey Riff Shop and take a look at our collection of “Sad Country” merchandise. You can wear it and display it proudly, and assure everyone that despite the melancholy nature of the music you listen to, you are a part of the happiest fandom in all of music. Plus, if the song are actually bumming you out a bit, we all know buying new clothes is “good” for mental health, right? Ever heard of retail therapy? You know what to do… View this post on Instagram A post shared by Whiskey Riff Shop (@whiskeyriffshop) The post What Are The Most Depressing Country Songs Of All Time?
