Multiple Jeffrey Epstein victims gave their testimonies before Congress this afternoon, as the House Oversight Committee’s investigation continues. We don’t have many details yet about the tales these survivors had to tell. The Hill has more on the meeting: Several Epstein accusers joined members of Congress for a closed-door meeting on Tuesday, as the House Oversight Committee continues its investigation into the federal government’s handling of the Epstein case. Democrats called for a hearing with Epstein’s accusers, saying they have firsthand accounts that “may not be sufficiently represented in the Department of Justice’s records.” The Oversight Committee also subpoenaed the Justice Department for documents related to the case, which the department began turning over last month. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told reporters ahead of the meeting that it’s important to hear from the victims and to promise them transparency in the investigation. “Yes, it’s for us to hear from them, to express our deep sympathy for what they’ve been made to endure and ensure that we have been and always will be for maximum transparency, for justice to be brought for all those engaged in these evils and to ensure that happens as quickly as possible,” Johnson said Tuesday.

President Donald Trump made it clear on Tuesday that he intends to clean up Chicago, no matter what the Democratic politicians who run the city and the state have to say. Over the Labor Day weekend, nearly 60 people were shot, and at least nine people were killed in Chicago. Under Chicago Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson, the city experienced 572 homicides in 2024, making it the deadliest U.S. city by total homicides for the 13th consecutive year. Illinois Democrat Gov. J.B. Pritzker “has repeatedly resisted calls from President Donald J. Trump to ask for assistance in quelling the violence,” The White House noted. Some of Pritzker’s statements have included, “We’ve been trying to prevent crime and it’s been working,” “We have our job, which is to fight violent crime on the streets of our city — and by the way, we’re succeeding,” “National Guard troops or any kind of troops on the streets of an American city don’t belong unless there is an insurrection, unless there is truly an emergency – and there is not,” “Donald Trump is attempting to manufacture a crisis,” and “Big cities have crime.” On Labor Day, Johnson yelled to a crowd, “No federal troops in the city of Chicago. No militarized force in the city of Chicago. We’re going to defend our democracy in the city of Chicago.” “Despite pleas from residents, members of the city council, and even MSNBC, Pritzker is too blinded by Trump Derangement Syndrome to take action in the best interest of his constituents and end the bloodshed,” The White House stated. “The Trump Administration’s message to Chicagoans and residents in Democrat-run cities nationwide is simple: you don’t have to live like this.” On Tuesday, Trump had a succinct response when asked by reporters if he had decided whether to send National Guard troops to Chicago, declaring, “We’re going in. I didn’t say when we’re going in. … This isn’t a political thing. I have an obligation.” He added that if Pritzker would “call me up, I would love to do it. Now, we’re going to do it anyway. We have the right to do it. Because I have an obligation to protect this country and that includes Baltimore. … Baltimore’s a very unsafe place.”

President Donald Trump said Tuesday night that China was conspiring with North Korea and Russia as it conducted a massive military parade.  China’s military parade, to celebrate Japan’s surrender at the end of World War II, was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. In a Truth Social post, Trump said the three were working to “conspire” against the United States and pondered whether China would recognize America’s World War II contributions.  “The big question to be answered is whether or not President Xi of China will mention the massive amount of support and ‘blood’ that The United States of America gave to China in order to help it to secure its FREEDOM from a very unfriendly foreign invader,” Trump wrote. “Many Americans died in China’s quest for Victory and Glory. I hope that they are rightfully Honored and Remembered for their Bravery and Sacrifice! May President Xi and the wonderful people of China have a great and lasting day of celebration. Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against The United States of America.” During the parade, China showcased a wide array of military equipment and capabilities, including an underwater drone, hypersonic missiles, an intercontinental ballistic missile, and fighter jets.  “The Chinese people are a people that are not afraid of violence and are self-reliant and strong,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said, according to the Associated Press. “The Chinese people’s rejuvenation cannot be blocked, and the noble goal of the peaceful development of human civilization must triumph.” Russia pushed back on Trump’s conspiracy allegations.  “Let’s hope that it was meant in some figurative sense,” said Putin spokesman Dmitri Peskov. “No one is plotting any conspiracies — no one has the desire or the time for this.” Earlier on Tuesday, Trump said that he didn’t think the military parade was a “challenge” to the United States.  “China needs us and I have a very good relationship with President Xi as you know. But China needs us much more then we need them,” Trump said. “I had, actually, a very good meeting with President Putin a couple of weeks ago. We’ll see if anything comes of it. If it doesn’t, we’ll take a different stance.” The Trump administration is currently working to negotiate a trade deal with China after months of back-and-forth tariffs. Last month, Trump signed a 90-day pause on higher tariffs on China as the two sides continue to work out a deal.
