For the Ancient Greeks, the Beach Could Be a Very Scary Place

Marie-Claire Beaulieu/The Conversation Many of us are heading to the beach to bask in the sun and unwind as part of our summer vacations. Research has shown that spending time at the beach can provide immense relaxation for many people. Staring at the ocean puts us in a mild meditative state, the smell of the breeze soothes us, the warmth of the sand envelops us, and above all, the continuous, regular sound of the waves allows us to fully relax. But beach vacations only became popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries as part of the lifestyle of the wealthy in Western countries. Early Europeans, and especially the ancient Greeks, thought the beach was a place of hardship and death. As a seafaring people, they mostly lived on the coastline, yet they feared the sea and thought that an agricultural lifestyle was safer and more respectable. As a historian of culture and an expert in Greek mythology, I am interested in this change of attitude toward the beach. Buckle Up… Lan Law (The Group Behind “Country To The Bone”) Says They Have “Big News” Coming Soon

Buckle Up… Lan Law (The Group Behind “Country To The Bone”) Says They Have “Big News” Coming Soon

Lan Law won’t stop until everyone is “Country to the Bone.” If you’ve never heard of the country music phenomenon that is Lan Law, consider yourself lucky. The duo – made up of brothers Lane and Curtis Lawson – released a country song called “Country to the Bone” in 2024 that was so incredibly bad that it started getting traction online. It’s like a train wreck that people can’t look away from. Now, Lan Law has a decent following online, and they’ve even sold out shows around Nashville (small shows, but sold out nonetheless). And to be clear, this isn’t a case where people are laughing with the country music duo. That’s the confusing part. Either Lan Law doesn’t realize that their success is due to people sharing the video as a joke and pointing out how bad it is, or they know that’s exactly what’s happening… and their just trying to capitalize on the opportunity. Though a song like “Country to the Bone” should have ended Lan Law’s music career before it even got started, they’re persistent, and the group is teasing new and big things that are still to come: “We’ve got some big news coming soon! Keep watching, keep streaming, and keep on keeping it ‘Country To The Bone!'” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lan Law (@lanlawmusic) Oh brother… Is there any way you can unsubscribe from Lan Law’s “big news” like you can with emails you don’t want to receive anymore? I’d be down to do that, because I have no interest in hearing anything else from the country music (?) duo. And judging by the comments people left on the above post, most other music listeners aren’t interested either: “I played this song on my radio during a road trip and even my kids told me to shut it off.” “This sounds like something that would come of asking ChatGPT to make a country song.” “Best satire page I’ve seen.” “Mom and dad’s bank account gotta be looking light at this point.” “Is this just a 3-song, tone deaf, sacrifice band with 14 videos for each song?” “This has to be a huge troll, has to be. There’s no other explanation.” “If y’all get some better vocals, the songs would still be bad.” “I continue to wait for the reveal that these two are highly trained comedians and this is just a bit they are doing. But the longer it goes on, the more I am believing these two actually are serious about this, and believe that anyone will actually find this pleasurable to the ears.” That last comment really hit the nail on the head, eh? Surely the Lan Law brothers are in on the joke at this point, right? There’s no way they have that many “Yes Men” and “Yes women” around them saying that what they are doing is good. At least that’s very hard to believe. Maybe the joke is on all of us, as we try to wrap our heads around this band that has somehow managed to milk all they can out of a song that’s truly one of the worst that’s ever been recorded. Then again, when you’re playing Nashville bars on Broadway and meeting with Bobby Bones, you’re kinda… doing it? Country music joke-ception perhaps. The post Buckle Up… Lan Law (The Group Behind “Country To The Bone”) Says They Have “Big News” Coming Soon first appeared on Whiskey Riff.

Bruce Dickinson explains why new Maiden drummer brings stability to the shows

Last December, 2024, Nicko McBrain revealed after a concert in São Paulo, Brazil that he decided to not tour with Iron Maiden anymore, since he wasn't being able to play like he used to after he suffered a stroke the previous year. The band replaced him with Simon Dawson, who previously worked with bands like The Outfield. In an interview with Rock of Nations, the band’s vocalist Bruce Dickinson explained why Dawson brings stability to the band, something that wasn’t happening with Nicko. Bruce Dickinson explains why new Maiden drummer brings stability to the shows "It's not weird from the perspective that what I'm hearing behind me is not Nicko. So I don't expect to see Nicko because everything about Simon is different. His drums are tuned differently, he plays the songs with a different feel to Nick. So because of that, I don't turn around and go, 'Oh, shock. Nicko should be there,' because it's obvious he's not there from the sound. The drums are tuned a lot lower, they're much fatter." "And Simon kind of sticks with the program in terms of the tempo of the song and everything. He's absolutely scrupulous about cutting the right tempo every time. So we actually, as a band, really kind of appreciate that. 'Cause all the guitarists have big smiles, like Cheshire cats, Steve the same. 'Cause everybody's not feeling, like, 'Whoa, hey, steady on there, trigger. Whoa, slow down there.' So that's what Simon brings to it — there's stability. And he's doesn't try to be Nicko. You can't be Nicko. I mean, there's only one Nicko; he is unique. That's why we didn't pick a clone. And there were plenty of drummers who could copy what Nicko did, but we don't want one of those. We wanted somebody that had a different feel," he said (Transcribed by Blabbermouth). Simon Dawson has been the drummer of British Lion, Steve Harris’ side-project, for the last 12 years.. He is known for being a praised session drummer and already was a touring member of the British Pop Rock/New Wave group The Outfield. https://youtu.be/zrm5KavmvyUThe post Bruce Dickinson explains why new Maiden drummer brings stability to the shows appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.
