An illegal immigrant from Guatemala who had been deported by the previous Trump administration was arrested Sunday for allegedly setting a woman on fire on the New York City subway. The suspect, 33, has not been named publicly, but the New York Post reported that he first entered the U.S. illegally in 2018 during the first Trump administration, but was deported within days. Those same sources told the Post that the suspect’s previous criminal history is “largely clean” except for entering the country illegally. Video of the woman on fire went viral Sunday evening, showing her standing in the doorway as a law enforcement officer walks by without offering assistance. The video also showed the suspect sitting on a bench facing the train car and watching the woman burn to death. Also on Sunday, two people were stabbed in a separate attack on the subway, with a man stabbed in the chest who later died and another man stabbed in the face. After these attacks, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul put out a tweet claiming crime was down on the subways, which was immediately mocked on social media, The Daily Wire reported. “In March, I took action to make our subways safer for the millions of people who take the trains each day. Since deploying the @NationalGuardNY to support @NYPDnews and @MTA safety efforts and adding cameras to all subway cars, crime is going down, and ridership is going up,” Hochul wrote on X. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Sunday that it was “one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit,” the Post reported.

You’d be surprised at what you can find when you take a closer look. For this group of friends, however, they tend to focus on one thing in particular: megalodon shark teeth. In his new book, Jordan Peterson solidifies a complete transformation away from his teenage beliefs claiming “religion was for the ignorant, weak and superstitious.” His fourth book, “We Who Wrestle with God: Perceptions of the Divine,” is essentially a Bible study, albeit one far more sophisticated and classical than your average Protestant workbook. Peterson surveys the Old Testament, delving into the major themes from creation in Genesis and the Garden of Eden, ending with the prophet Jonah. He hints in the introduction that a forthcoming book will examine the life of Christ.   A creative and evocative read, the book is a combination of admiration for the Bible’s place in human mythology with respect for its literary themes. Its title comes from the name Israel, which means in Hebrew, “One who wrestles or struggles with God.” “This is the story on which Western civilization is predicated,” Peterson writes. “It is a collection of characterizations not only of God, whose imitation, worship, or indeed, embodiment is held to be the highest of all possible aims, but of man and of woman, whose characters are held to exist in relationship to that God, and of society, in relation to the individual and the divine. It is, as well, the revelation of the sacrifice that makes such aim possible.” A hefty tome at 576 pages, it is a detailed manifesto in support of the Judeo-Christian worldview underpinning Western civilization’s canon of law and culture. Yet his admiration is one of almost a sociological spectator rather than devout believer because Peterson does not confess orthodox Christian belief.      “The biblical story, in its totality, is the frame through which the world of facts reveals itself, insofar as the West itself is concerned: it is the description of the hierarchy of value within which even science itself (that is, the science that ultimately pursues the good) is made possible,” Peterson continues. “The Bible is the library of stories on which the most productive, freest, and most stable and peaceful societies the world has ever known are predicated—the foundation of the West, plain and simple.”  Because Peterson is not a confessing Christian (though his wife, who recently interviewed me on her podcast, was newly baptized Catholic), Aaron M. Renn, a Midwest-based senior fellow at American Reformer, recently wrote a piece for the Blaze News about what he calls Peterson “eating the church’s lunch.” He notes that Peterson’s popularity grew through a series of lectures and videos he gave on Genesis before hundreds of thousands of mostly young men watched—some of which stretched two hours per episode.   “The American church should be embarrassed that Jordan Peterson ate its lunch,” writes Renn, a practicing Christian. “And it’s not just Peterson; an armada of other influencers have done the same. Peterson’s success should be especially galling because his work is frequently about the Bible … Here in Indianapolis, he sold out a 2,500-seat auditorium with a minimum ticket price of over $100. The audience, in effect, paid to hear him give a sermon on Genesis. People are willing to pay Jordan Peterson to preach to them.” Renn frequently writes on the Christian church and its failure to successfully connect with men, critiquing its inability to engage and grapple with the intellectual rigor that resonates with a masculine audience. Peterson shot to fame in part for defending white men against rabid, irrational, Marxist-infused identity-fueled attacks. “Strangely, the church doesn’t seem to be all that interested in understanding the Jordan Peterson phenomenon, much less the rest of the men’s influencer archipelago ranging from the healthy (like former Navy SEAL Jocko Willink) to the dubious (like the infamous Andrew Tate),” writes Renn, a former senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Public Research. “It has continued with legacy strategies that appeal to some but are clearly not as effective as what online influencers are doing.” Quickly after its release, “We Who Wrestle With God” topped a New York Times bestseller list, a week after it won Amazon’s lead spot. Elon Musk’s endorsement of Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has sparked significant controversy, particularly among European political figures concerned about the potential for what they call “foreign interference” in Germany’s upcoming elections. Musk, the CEO of X, voiced his support for some of AfD’s policies following a deadly terror attack in Germany. His comments have raised alarm among EU officials, prompting calls for increased scrutiny of the X app and its compliance with the EU’s stringent censorship laws. Thierry Breton, the European Union’s former Commissioner, took to X to express his outrage over Musk’s support for AfD. In a tweet posted on December 21, Breton accused Musk of being involved in “foreign interference” in Germany’s electoral process, especially given the timing of his comments around the tragic attack in Magdeburg. Breton, who has been an advocate for strict censorship of social media platforms, and even threatened Elon Musk for over his interview with President Donald Trump, also called for the immediate application of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) to combat what he described as “double standards” when it comes to regulating speech online. Breton’s tweet read: “A few weeks ahead of the next elections in Germany, and at the time of the heinous attack in Magdeburg, @elonmusk — the world’s top influencer on X and a potential member of the future U.S. administration — openly supports the far-right AfD party. Isn’t this the very definition of foreign interference? We must end the ‘double standards’ and apply the #DSA in Europe ” This rhetoric reflects the growing unease among pro-censorship EU officials, who have long sought to use legislation like the DSA to control what is shared on social media platforms. Musk’s support for AfD, a party criticized by some for its skepticism of some immigration policies and labeled as “far-right,” has spurred discussions about free speech and government intervention online. Karl Lauterbach, the German Health Minister, also weighed in, echoing concerns about Musk’s political influence. Whenever the first Trump administration made noises about defunding public media (in its 2017 and 2018 budget proposals, for instance), including National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the congressionally founded tax-funded entity ostensibly in charge, would respond by emphasizing how PBS benefits kids. This statement from PBS CEO Paula Kerger in February 2020 bragged: Decades of research confirms that PBS’s premier children’s media service, PBS KIDS, helps children build critical literacy, math and social-emotional skills, enabling them to find success in school and life. But must PBS’s educational support for children also include transgender and gender-identity propaganda? PBS has run plenty of stories on its evening broadcast encouraging transgender treatments and surgery and standing for “transgender rights,” not only for adults but even impressionable minors who are not ready to make such irrevocable decisions about their body. The controversial Trevor Project, which bills itself as “the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention nonprofit organization for LGBTQ+ young people” and aggressively pushes so-called “gender-affirming” surgeries (like “cross-sex hormones, castration, and breast removal”) onto kids, has not only figured heavily in PBS coverage, which regularly promotes its slanted surveys on so-called suicidal ideation among LGBTQ youth. Trevor's presence has also seeped into its coverage aimed at children themselves. More trans-propaganda aimed at children: WNET, an influential public station which serves New York City and produces much PBS programming, ran a “Teacher’s Voice” piece in October 2020, “Queering Your Classroom with the Understanding LGTBQ+ Identity Toolkit,” written by Natalie Nuzzo, an 8th grade (!) teacher who celebrated that “LGTBQ+” resource: In my 8th grade English class, I teach a project and inquiry based unit on discrimination. I begin the unit with a class viewing of the video “All Oppression is Connected,” featuring poet and activist Staceyann Chin….After the viewing, I adapt the support materials to deepen our understanding of how LGBTQ+ rights are connected to the struggles around race, gender, reproductive rights, wealth inequality and immigration. Although our students may have experience discussing the aforementioned topics, they may not perceive the interconnected nature of these relations. As Chin reminds us at the close of the interview, “we cannot remove our struggle from the person next to us.” No wonder Oklahoma’s Republican governor Kevin Stitt vetoed funding for the state’s PBS station in 2023 for “indoctrination and over-sexualization” of children. Citizens Defending Freedom also called on PBS to be defunded for promoting its LGBT ‘toolkit’ for schools “Understanding LGBTQ+ Identity: A Toolkit for Educators,” initially created by the NYC Department of Education.  The PBS News Hour’s segment on the Supreme Court’s recent oral arguments on whether Tennessee could ban so-called gender-affirming care for minors, from reporter Laura Barron-Lopez, ignored the intellectual disintegration of the trans-kids argument under Justice Samuel Alito’s rigorous questioning. Her piece was instead dominated by emotional blackmail about “transgender” kids killing themselves for lack of surgery, lack of access to their chosen school bathroom, or having their chosen pronouns ignored.
