NBC's Alba Wrongly Hints Columbine Mass Shooters Bought Guns Legally

In a few appearances on Thursday afternoon‚ NBC News White House correspondent Monica Alba helped spread misinformation about there being a link between gun shows and school shootings as she promoted President Joe Biden's latest push to require unlicensed gun dealers to do background checks on buyers. MSNBC afternoon host Chris Jansing set up a segment on the issue and asked Alba to explain how the President's move was to &;quot;fill a loophole.&;quot; &;quot; And‚ Chris‚ we know all too well there are horrible stories about shooters who maybe were denied the ability to purchase a gun at a sporting goods store‚ but then they were able to go online and buy one because it was an unauthorized retailer‚&;quot; she proclaimed. What she refused to meantion was that firearms purchased online needed to be delivered to licenced firearms dealers‚ whereupon pick up‚ the purchaser would have a background check conducted.     Then‚ even though the gunman who attacked a school in Uvalde‚ Texas‚ in 2022 passed a background check to buy his gun‚ Alba misleadingly made it sound like the new background checks requirement was somehow relevant to this case as she continued: &;quot; So this is really the Biden White House trying to curb that‚ and it's something that specifically became a huge movement and moment for the White House to try to accomplish after the horrific school shooting in Uvalde. So this was something that the President vowed to do.&;quot; A bit later‚ Alba misleadingly suggested a background check requirement might have prevented the school shootings at Columbine 25 years ago: And‚ again‚ Chris‚ we're talking about just next week it's going to be the 25th anniversary of the Columbine shooting‚ and those shooters were able to get those guns‚ again‚ through this unauthorized process which is known as the &;quot;gun show loophole.&;quot; So it just really is a stark reminder of for how many years this has been such an issue. And the Biden administration says this is a step forward. Alba then made a couple of appearances on Hallie Jackson's show on NBCNOW and made similar claims about the Columbine attackers. About 5:32 p.m. Eastern‚ she asserted: And when you look at the two shooters in that case‚ they were able to purchase weapons because of the so-called &;quot;gun show loophole‚&;quot; and that means that even if maybe they went to try to get those guns from a sporting goods store or from a retailer‚ and maybe they would have been stopped there because they would have had to undergo a background check‚ then they were still able to go and get them from an unauthorized retailer which right now really is a sort of shadow market that exists online. It exists at these sort of flea markets. It exists at these sort of gun shows.     But‚ in fact‚ the two Columbine gunmen acquired their guns through circumstances that were already illegal. Both the individuals who supplied them with firearms knew that the gunmen were underage and intentionally bought the firearms for them‚ which meant it was an illegal straw purchase. Mark Manes was sentenced to six years in prison while Robyn Anderson‚ who provided two guns through an illegal straw purchase at a gun show‚ was not charged by prosecutors after she cooperated in the investigation. Transcripts are below. Click &;quot;expand&;quot; to read: MSNBC's Chris Jansing Reports April 11‚ 2024 2:05 p.m. Eastern CHRIS JANSING: Now to Washington where the White House just approved the biggest expansion of gun background checks in decades. NBC's White House correspondent Monica Alba is following this for us. Monica‚ this is intended -- this rule -- to fill a loophole. Tell us about that. MONICA ALBA‚ NBC WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Exactly‚ Chris. This is known as the so-called &;quot;gun show loophole.&;quot; So while some retailers and stores that sell arms do have to do background checks‚ there is really this market for people who can sell guns out of their home or online who don't have to meet those requirements. So this new rule put in effect by the Biden administration which would start in about a month or so would effectively force anyone who is doing that to conduct a background check. And‚ Chris‚ we know all too well there are horrible stories about shooters who maybe were denied the ability to purchase a gun at a sporting goods store‚ but then they were able to go online and buy one because it was an unauthorized retailer. So this is really the Biden White House trying to curb that‚ and it's something that specifically became a huge movement and moment for the White House to try to accomplish after the horrific school shooting in Uvalde. So this was something that the President vowed to do. And remember that when they were able to pass the bipartisan gun safety law that went into effect in 2022‚ this was a part of it. They said it's going to take some time to actually make this rule effective so that we can see now what's going to start to happen in the coming weeks. Now‚ it's possible this could face some legal challenges‚ but the administration believes that they can cite the 2022 law as a reason to uphold it. And‚ again‚ Chris‚ we're talking about just next week it's going to be the 25th anniversary of the Columbine shooting‚ and those shooters were able to get those guns‚ again‚ through this unauthorized process which is known as the &;quot;gun show loophole.&;quot; So it just really is a stark reminder of for how many years this has been such an issue. And the Biden administration says this is a step forward. It's something that they did pledge to do‚ but that they would like to do a lot more when it comes to gun violence prevention. And‚ of course‚ that's part of the President's pledge to also ban assault weapons which he has not been able to do so far in this Congress.  (...) NBCNOW's Hallie Jackson NOW April 11‚ 2024 5:31 p.m. Eastern HALLIE JACKSON: Back here to Washington now‚ and the Biden administration tonight taking steps to make the biggest expansion in decades to federal background checks for buying guns. The Department of Justice submitting this nearly 500-page set of regulations that makes sellers -- that would make sellers run background checks on a potential buyer's criminal and mental health history. Now‚ here's why it's such a big deal. It could mean the end of a controversial so-called the &;quot;gun show loophole&;quot; which basically lets unlicensed private sellers in some states legally sell guns at gun shows‚ out of their houses‚ and through online platforms without putting buyers through the background check system. The new rules come from legislation that Congress passed back in June 2022 after the mass school shooting in Uvalde‚ Texas‚ where 21 people were killed. Just this year -- just this year‚ rather‚ we've already seen more than 100 mass shootings -- each year before that‚ hundreds more. Monica Alba is joining us now. Big‚ big push here for the Biden administration to sort of regulate the so-called shadow market that's been growing fast. Talk us through it. MONICA ALBA‚ NBC WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Exactly‚ Hallie‚ and it's so tragic when you think about mass shootings. The anniversary next week of Columbine is going to be here -- 25 years since that deadly shooting. And when you look at the two shooters in that case‚ they were able to purchase weapons because of the so-called &;quot;gun show loophole‚&;quot; and that means that even if maybe they went to try to get those guns from a sporting goods store or from a retailer‚ and maybe they would have been stopped there because they would have had to undergo a background check‚ then they were still able to go and get them from an unauthorized retailer which right now really is a sort of shadow market that exists online. It exists at these sort of flea markets. It exists at these sort of gun shows. So this new rule which takes effect in about a month from now from the Biden administration would effectively tell these thousands or so who  are selling these kinds of firearms that you do have to be federally licensed‚ and you do have to conduct background checks on anybody who is attempting to purchase these kinds of weapons. Now‚ this did come directly from the 2022 bipartisan gun safety law that the President was able to put into action‚ but he needed the DOJ to actually work on this rule specifically‚ but it was a major priority‚ and they feel like this will help. They do feel like there have been cases where specifically people have been denied the purchase of weapons in background checks‚ so if they can expand that to create a wider net‚ that that will all be incredibly helpful here.

Cats in the White House: A Surprising History

Click to Skip Ahead 1800s 1900s 2000s Cats are one of Americans’ favorite pets‚ so it is no surprise that they have shared some of the most important places in American history‚ including the White House itself. 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue has featured its fair share of cats. Some of these cats were witnesses to the most important moments of their time‚ even if they didn’t know it. Many Americans like to imagine that their leaders are not all that dissimilar to themselves‚ and living with a cat in the most famous house in America adds to that mystique. Here is a brief yet surprising history of cats in the White House dating from the Civil War to the present day. The Earliest Cats The first cats to live in the White House were likely nameless. That is according to historian Andrew Hager‚ the historian-in-residence at the Presidential Pet Museum.1 Cats would have been kept on the grounds as a way to keep the rodent populations down at a time before cats were really kept as indoor pets. Cats likely played an instrumental role in keeping mice out of the pantries of the White House during the 19th century‚ even if they weren’t official pets. 1800s Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln was the first president to officially keep cats as pets in the White House. His cats are fairly famous in this regard. Then Secretary of State William Seward gave two kittens to President Lincoln as a gift. The cats were named Tabby and Dixie. President Lincoln was a well-known lover of animals‚ and contemporaries of his time‚ including his wife‚ often spoke about the president’s fondness for animals‚ including his pair of pet cats. Rutherford B. Hayes Rutherford B. Hayes was the second president to officially take in a cat while he was in the White House. In 1878‚ David B. Sickels‚ a consulate member in Bangkok‚ Siam‚ read that the First Lady was a cat lover. He sent a Siamese cat to the White House with his regards. At the time‚ Sickels believed that the cat was the first Siamese cat to reach the United States‚ though those claims are not believed to be 100% accurate. The family named the cat Siam‚ but it did not have a long tenure in the Big House. Siam fell ill that same year and died despite great efforts to nurse it back to health. Image Credit: BearFotos‚ Shutterstock 1900s Teddy Roosevelt President Theodore Roosevelt was also an avid lover of animals. His collection during his time in the White House included two cats‚ Tom Quartz and Slippers. Slippers was a six-toed cat. Six-toed cats were all the rage during the early 20th century. Slippers could be found prowling around the hallways of the White House at all hours‚ and visitors would often have to step gingerly around the sleepy feline to get into specific offices or banquet areas. Woodrow Wilson Woodrow Wilson owned two cats during his tenure in the White House. His cats were named Mittens and Puffins. The pair were said to have been mischievous and would often jump onto the dining tables while people were eating. Exasperated staff would try to shoo the cats away by spritzing them with water. Wilson’s cats were not popular in the public eye‚ and very little is remembered about them outside of their occasional antics. Calvin Coolidge President Coolidge owned no fewer than five cats while he was in office. One of his cats was even reported to be a pure bobcat. His cats’ names were Tiger‚ Blacky‚ Bounder‚ Timmie‚ and Smoky. These cats could be found roaming the grounds‚ sleeping in the elevator‚ and lapping up cream given to them by friendly staff members. Coolidge’s cat‚ Tiger‚ once became lost on the White House grounds‚ and the adept use of new radio technology was used to locate and return the cat to the house. John F. Kennedy The Kennedy family owned a cat named Tom Kitten. Unlike other White House cats‚ Tom Kitten did not live at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue full time. He was technically owned by JFK’s daughter Caroline. President Kennedy was reportedly allergic to cats and did not want the feline living in close proximity to him. However‚ his beloved daughter was allowed to bring the cat in for a visit at nearly any time‚ and it was often seen playing in the White House‚ even if it lived off campus most of the time. Image Credit: Thanakorn Kosalakorn‚ Shutterstock Gerald Ford President Ford was the next president to have a cat that caught the attention of the public and the media. After the plight of Siam during the Hayes administration‚ few White House cats were noted by the media. Ford’s cat was named Shan Shein and was owned by his daughter Susan. Like Siam‚ Shan was a beautiful Siamese cat that was petite and adorable. The cat’s appearance made it a fan favorite when it came to White House pets. Shan Shein was often found hiding under various beds around the White House‚ showing how cats are almost always the same no matter where they are living. Jimmy Carter Jimmy Carter continued what was becoming a growing trend: Siamese cats in the White House. Like Gerald Ford‚ Carter brought in a cat owned by his daughter Amy. President Ford’s cat was named Misty Malarky Ying Yang. No‚ that is not a typo. The cat’s eclectic name and sweet personality even inspired an artist at the time to compose a song with the same title. Gabor Szabo released his song Misty Malarky Ying Yang in 1977. The song is a funky 1970s instrumental piece that you can listen to here. Bill Clinton It was over a decade before another cat entered the White House and America’s heart. Bill Clinton brought the family cat Socks along with him when he was elected president in the early 1990s. Socks was a handsome black and white cat with‚ you guessed it‚ white paws that resembled socks. Socks‚ like Misty Malarky Ying Yang before him‚ inspired a song and a book and even had a website made for him. Today‚ Socks is one of the most famous cats to ever live in the White House. Image Credit: milivigerova‚ Pixabay 2000s George W. Bush George W. Bush was yet another president that brought the family cat to live in the White House when he was elected. The cat‚ India “Willie” Bush‚ was adopted by the family when his daughters were young girls. The cat lived with the family for years and died at a respectable age just weeks before the Bushes were slated to move out to make way for the incoming Obama family. Joe Biden Joe Biden‚ the 46th president of the United States‚ became the eleventh official president to feature cats in the White House. Unlike other presidents‚ Biden’s cat was not a beloved family pet. Instead‚ Willow made her presence known when she jumped on stage during a speech being given by Joe Biden on the campaign trail. The cat caused such a stir that the Bidens decided to adopt her on the spot. The connection between the bold cat and the Biden family was unmistakable. Willow moved into the White House after Biden was elected. Perhaps she is lucky. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alfonso Carlos (@alfonsocarlos.a) Conclusion From unnamed barn cats to modern day gems‚ from the Civil War to the present day‚ cats have long been a part of White House culture and lore. Some presidential cats became famous while others were content to live out their days sunbathing and enjoying attention from visiting guests. Eleven presidents owned dozens of cats over nearly two centuries of history. Cats have long had a place in the hearts of Americans‚ and they had a place in the heart of America’s most famous dwelling as well. Johnson's speakership in peril as another Republican cosponsors motion to vacate

As the threat of potentially being ousted from the speakership slot looms over House Speaker Mike Johnson‚ Republican Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona has now cosponsored a motion to vacate.GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia filed the motion to vacate last month‚ and Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky announced earlier this week that he was cosponsoring it. And now‚ Gosar is on board too.&;quot;I have added my name in support of the motion to vacate the Speaker. Our border cannot be an afterthought. We need a Speaker who puts America first rather than bending to the reckless demands of the warmongers‚ neo-cons and the military industrial complex making billions from a costly and endless war half a world away‚&;quot; Gosar said in a statement. — (@) Greene and Massie thanked their colleague for his support.&;quot; If Johnson can do so much damage in just 6 months‚ imagine how much worse it can get. And we have 9 more months until hopefully Pres Trump is back in the WH‚&;quot; Greene tweeted. — (@) GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida‚ who last year instigated the ouster of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from the speakership‚ has warned that in the event of a Johnson ouster with the currently thin GOP House majority‚ there is a risk that some GOP lawmakers &;quot;might take a bribe‚ take a walk‚ feign an ailment‚ and flip this thing to the Democrats.&;quot; — (@) Like Blaze News&;#63; Bypass the censors‚ sign up for our newsletters‚ and get stories like this direct to your inbox. California man sentenced for sneaking into homes and fondling women's feet while they slept

Nevada police say they nabbed a foot-fondler who would sneak into homes and startle women in their sleep in the Lake Tahoe area last summer. Investigators say that 26-year-old Mark Gonzales broke into at least two condominiums in Stateline through unlocked screen doors. He would then find a woman sleeping‚ stand by the foot of her bed‚ and fondle her feet. When she would confront him‚ he would flee the scene. “I will never forget how he crawled on the floor after he touched me in my most vulnerable state‚” said a victim of the foot fondling to the Record-Courier. Her husband said she hasn't been the same since the incident. “Since he broke into our room that morning‚ she has not been the same‚” he said. “She is up at every bump in the night.” Gonzales was arrested in Aug. 2022 at his home in Merced County in California and then extradited to Douglas County. Investigators said that the two foot fondling incidents appeared to be an escalation of disturbing behavior by the man. Gonzales had allegedly stolen women's shoes‚ trespassed‚ and even sexually gratified himself in previous incidents. The Merced County Sheriff's Office confirmed that he had been previously arrested in 2017 for trespassing and in 2019 for theft while on supervised release. A Douglas County judge sentenced Gonzalez to eight to 20 years for two counts of burglary. He was also ordered to pay $435 to his victims but received 33 days' credit for time served. “These types of crimes are especially alarming to a community‚ and being able to make an arrest allows the victims and community to feel safe again‚” read a statement from Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley about the case. Residents of the Atwater community said the were stunned to discover one of their neighbors was accused of foot fondling. &;quot; It's scary&;#33; Especially‚ a small town‚ from here‚ I mean you don't really expect something like that here‚ I know it didn't happen here‚ but he's from here‚ so‚&;quot; said Maria Nash to KFSN-TV. &;quot; So maybe he needs the kind of psychological help‚ if he's on drugs‚ rehab‚ something. Maybe there is hope for him‚&;quot; said Sylvia Gracia. Atwater is a city of about 32‚000 people in central California. Security video shows college student grabbing thug's gun and ejecting magazine during alleged robbery at University of Chicago

A female student at the University of Chicago was able to thwart an armed robbery‚ and the brave act was caught on surveillance video. The student was walking back to her apartment on Wednesday before 3 p.m. when video showed her being confronted by a man who appeared to point a gun at her. The student identified herself only as Maddi and spoke to WLS-TV about the incident. &;quot;I was just walking home from class and I see a man in a mask approach me‚&;quot; she recalled. &;quot; And he kind of comes towards me‚ and I think to myself‚ 'Just keep walking‚' but then we have an altercation.&;quot; She appears to seek help from other students‚ but one student sitting a few feet away does nothing but continue watching the struggle. That's when the student grabbed the gun. &;quot;I'm able to get my hands on the gun‚&;quot; she said‚ &;quot;and remove the magazine on the gun‚ and I toss it into the bush.&;quot; The attacker turned toward her‚ but she was able to run away. Moments later‚ he returned in a dark-colored sedan to try to reclaim the gun magazine. He and the driver were able to get away. Maddi says she wouldn't recommend others do what she did. &;quot;I think fight definitely kicked in‚ but I'm in no way advocating of resisting armed robbery‚&;quot; she continued. &;quot;I think it was really not the right decision looking back on it.&;quot; Police said there were other robberies on the same day as the one targeting Maddi. She just wants them to get caught. &;quot;I don't blame the campus ... I don't blame the bystander ... I don't blame the police ... they did a great job‚&;quot; Maddi concluded. &;quot;I think it's just finding the people who did this attack‚ because they will do it again.&;quot; Students told WLS that more crimes appear to be happening to students on campus. &;quot;Normally‚ it doesn't happen on campus‚&;quot; said junior Michel Angelo Pagan. &;quot; It happens to people walking back to apartments off campus‚ so‚ the fact that it's getting closer and closer to the central hub of where students are is very concerning.&;quot; Police said they are looking for suspects and will increase patrolling in the area.
