How Far Will Trump’s Feud With Elon Musk Go?
President Donald Trump’s feud with Elon Musk continued to escalate on Thursday afternoon, when the billionaire entrepreneur accused Trump of being in the Epstein files.
Trump, in turn, made no personal attack, but defended what he calls the “big, beautiful bill.”
“Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files,” Musk said on his social media platform, X. “That is the real reason they have not been made public.”

The sensational accusation followed days of Trump and Musk disagreeing on the merits of the “big, beautiful” spending bill to fund the federal government.
In a Truth Social post Thursday afternoon, Trump says he would rather Musk criticize him personally than attack the spending package.
“I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago. This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress,” Trump said. “It’s a Record Cut in Expenses, $1.6 Trillion Dollars, and the Biggest Tax Cut ever given. If this Bill doesn’t pass, there will be a 68% Tax Increase, and things far worse than that. I didn’t create this mess, I’m just here to FIX IT. This puts our Country on a Path of Greatness. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Following the escalation of the feud, Tesla stock has fallen 4.2% to $284.70. This marks the 11th-worst single trading day for Tesla since the company went public in 2010.
Musk’s term as a special government employee at the head of DOGE ended on May 30, and he stepped down from his role in government. Trump and Musk appeared in the Oval Office together that day to announce that Musk would be focusing his attention fully on his businesses.
After his exit, Musk took to X to urge Congress members to “KILL the BILL.”
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” Musk wrote of the spending package on June 3. “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

When asked on Thursday by a reporter about Musk’s opposition to the bill heralded as the “greatest tax cut in history” by Trump, the president said he was “disappointed” in Musk and unsure if they could remain friends.
“I’m very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here, better than you people,” Trump said.
“Elon and I had a great relationship,” Trump said. “I don’t know if we will anymore.”
Trump suggested he struck a nerve with Musk by accusing him of opposing the bill because it cuts electric vehicle mandates.
“He knew everything about it and he had no problem,” Trump said. “But then all of a sudden he had a problem, and he only developed the problem when he found out that we’re gonna have to cut the EV [electric vehicle] mandate because that’s billions and billions of dollars, and it really is unfair.”
Musk quickly responded to Trump’s statements, accusing the president of “ingratitude” for his work on Trump’s campaign.
“Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate,” Musk wrote.
Trump had said that he would have won the election with or without Musk’s help.
“He actually went up and campaigned for me,” Trump said. “I think I would have won, Susie [Wiles] would say I would have won Pennsylvania easily anyway, even if the governor ran, the real governor, not the governor from Minnesota, who’s, I mean, he’s a sick puppy, that guy, that poor guy. Feel sorry for him, but they made a bad choice with him.”

Musk maintained that he didn’t disapprove of the bill because of the EV mandates but because he is concerned about the national debt.
“Whatever. Keep the EV/solar incentive cuts in the bill, even though no oil & gas subsidies are touched (very unfair!!), but ditch the MOUNTAIN of DISGUSTING PORK in the bill,” Musk tweeted. “In the entire history of civilization, there has never been legislation that both big and beautiful. Everyone knows this! Either you get a big and ugly bill or a slim and beautiful bill. Slim and beautiful is the way.”

Trump doubled down on his claim that Musk only opposed the “big beautiful bill” because it could harm Tesla.
“Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!” Trump said on TruthSocial.
“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,” he added. “I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!”
“Such an obvious lie,” Musk responded shortly after. “So sad.

MAGA influencer Jack Posobiec jumped to the president’s defense regarding Musk’s claim about the Epstein files.
“If Trump was in the Epstein files it would have been released a decade ago and there wouldn’t have been any need to make up a fake Russian hooker dossier,” Posobiec wrote.

Attorney General Pam Bondi has promised to release the Epstein files, but only partial records have been made public.
Musk also pounced on Congressional Republicans who have expressed fiscally conservative opinions in the past and are currently supporting the “big beautiful bill.”
“Where is the Mike Johnson of 2023!?” Musk asked.
